Has anybody driven recently who can tell me how much they spent on gas, the type of vehicle they drove and the average price per gallon they paid for. I would really appreciate the help in figuring out how much we will be paying for gas. I tried the AAA fuel calculator and it seems really low. I wonder if being a family of six will make a big difference in gas mileage. WE have a Dodge Grand Caravan and live in Plainfield, CT.

We drove down from SE CT the week between Christmas and New Years. We rented a Hundai (sp?) Sonata - 4 dr sedan. We drove from Waterford to Newport News, Va the first day (family there where we stayed over) and the rest of the way the next day - but straight back on the trip home. If I calculated correctly, it cost us around $250 dollars in gas, not counting the full tank from the car rental site. While I can't remember exactly how much the ave price of gas was, I can tell you that EVERY state's gas price was lower than CT! :lmao: I believe where we filled up in Orlando was close to CT's price, but it may have been because we filled up right off the highway. So, it wasn't too bad, and we went a bit out of our way than we could have. We also go the Tappan Zee bridge and part of the Garden St Hwy, because we prefer that to I-95 and the GW.

The other thing to remember is the bazillion tolls from CT to the MD tunnels. We have EZpass, so that makes the trip a lot faster than having to wait in the toll lines (a probably saved some gas!)

We would never have driven, but decided in early Dec to go to see a friend play in the Champs Sports Bowl, and it would have cost a small fortune to fly with such little notice.
Good luck!

I have a Dodge Grand Caravan. The fuel estimator sight said it would cost about $270 round trip. That just semms so low. I thought It would be somwhere around $600.

We used AAA's fuel $ estimator last summer. We have a 2003 CR-V. We were supposed to spend $160 each way (from Phila) for fuel. Our total was $120 each way. We used mostly Exxon. I would plan on AAA's estimate to be slightly higher than what your actual total will be.

Enjoy your trip! :car:

No, I don't think so.

I drove regularrly from MA to FL, 1350 miles each was. I never spent more than $300. That was in a 1/2 ton GMC Sierra Pickup 4X4. Even with the higher gas prices I don't see you spending $600.

$270 is probably pretty close for a round trip.

We are a family of six. We drove our Ford Windstar, from Westchester County, NY to Disneyworld in August of 2006. We did use our car to drive to the parks and were on vacation for 12 days. We also drove home through the tropical storm so that also used more gas. We used 125 gallons of gas roundtrip on this vacation. It cost us about $360. Prices were averaging about $2.85 a gallon on this trip. We usually average about 100 gallons of gas each trip, as we have driven many times. About 4 years ago, on our first driving trip our gas bill total was only $120.

So to answer your question, $270 seems reasonable.

DH drives a Prius. He just drove from NJ to Orlando and back on about $100 worth of gas.

Gas prices have been fluctuating wildly lately, I'd plan on at least $2.50 a gallon. Depending on where in CT you are, it's between 1100 and 1250 miles each way.

We drove from Maine to Jacksonville Beach, Florida at the beginning of Feb for $150.00 in a Chev Trailblazer (suv). We took a different route , with alot of up & down mountains (uses more gas). I do not remember how much a gallon we paid.:moped:

how did posters come up with the $270 for gas from northeast- CT in this case?- (OP didnt state what city in CT so I will assume Hartford.)

Gas used on a trip is calculated by taking these steps

1) calculate or take reading from odometer of miles driven. I plugged in Hartford to WDW in expedia and got 1223 miles ow which is 2450 rt total rounded off. Any mapping program or web site will get you this number

2) Determine your vehicles MPG (miles per gallon).

Digress a bit: How do you determine your mpg? By driving and keeping records. Fill up vehicle to the top and drive x number of miles. Fill up again to the top. Take x miles driven and divide by gallons used and you get mpg. 250 miles divided by 10 gallons equals 25 mpg. End digress. Your Dodge Caravan should get about that on the road easily. I owned one of those vans once.

3) We now know the total rt miles from Hartford to Orlando and the mpg of the vehicle. All that is left is the price per gallon. For our purposes we will assume $2.759. As they say your mpg and price per gallon will vary and will probably be less as you go south.

Total cost of gasoline on this trip is miles (2450) divided by mpg (25) times price per gallon ($2.759) which equals $270.38.

We just drove from New Haven in Feb and paid about $320 round trip in gas and tolls. Hope that helps!

Nice summary Bob!

I would also just remind the OP that the drive to Orlando is going to be mostly highway driving, and you get better mileage driving the highway (not as many starts and stops, which are what eat fuel). I think for the GC you can have as much of a difference as low as 16 city, and 30 highway! If you do mostly city driving, that would throw off your estimate of what the van does on a highway.
