how much luggage does your 4 person family take?

wow, you guys are good.
We are a family of 4.
DH has his suitcase, I have mine, the kids share 1 and we take a golf bag suitcase that we are able to put the umbrella stroller in (and that allows for some extra souvenir/outlet shopping space on the return trip).
So that's 4 bags.
Then we have the other stroller that we gate check, the 2 car seats (we stay off site and rent a car), and lets not forget the 3 carry-ons. 2 little rolling suitcases for the kids and one for us.
Somehow this worked out for us last year although I'm sure we must look like a travelling carnival.

We each take a carry on size rolling piece of luggage and a backpack. That's it. My husband's carry on even includes a laptop compartment, so he can take that too without an extra bag. We don't check anything. We take everything we need except a few snacks and maybe some holiday decor for our rooms if we want it, which I ship to the hotel. We do laundry every few days. Not just to have clean clothes, but I hate to bring dirty ones home! I also hate to pay extra to check luggage; we fly Allegiant. Have fun packing!

We take 3 carryon bags (one each for Dh and myself, and DS10 and DS6 share one). DH takes the small camera bag as his personal item, I have my small purse and DS's take a backpack with books, electronic games and the 6 yo's lovey. I usually take a small canvas duffel, packed flat in one of the carryons, in case we get carried away with the souvenirs. We do not do laundry during our trips and wear different clothes every day. I think it's all in the packing style. I roll everything and only take 2 prs of shoes each - one on our feet, the other in the bags. I used to travel 25 weeks out of the year for business and I got very good at getting everything I needed into a carry on bag !

We take four suitcases. 1 for me, 1 for Dh, 1 for both DD's, 1 for other stuff (like swimmies, ponchos, pull-ups, swim toys, princess outfits, etc). I also take a small back pack as a carry on with some "plane things" for me and bathing suits/shorts, etc My dd's each have their own small "plane bag" with books and small toys in them.

My family probably overpakcs but this year we had:

2 suitcases
4 duffle bags
2 backpacks (for the carride)
1 shoulder bag (my mom's for makup and stuff)
and 2 laptop cases

The worst of it was coming home no one had room in their suitcases for souvinirs so we just had to put everything in the bags they came in. The only problem with this was we were always afraid of something falling out.

our last trip (Feb 07 6 days) was Me, DH, DS 6, DS 3, little brother 6 and little sister 7. We drove each child had a bookbag for thier "stuff" (bookbag was for things to keep peace during the car ride from Va to Fl) DH & I each shared 1 large suitcase and 4 kids shared 1 large bag used a 3rd large suitcase for snacks/ and other things. since we ate snacks there, used 3rd large suit case for souviners coming home. it was tight getting all the clothes into the suit cases since it was long pants & shirts weather there, but we managed. we did laundry while we were there, but only on the next to the last day, mainly to not bring home tons of dirty clothes could have skip the laundry if I really wanted to

total 3 large suit cases, 4 small backpacks, laptop case, my purse, umbrella stroller, cooler

When we flew last year. We checked 2 large and 2 medium suitcases. And carryone bags for me, DH, and both of our sons. I put snacks, DVD player, DVD's, gameboys, activity book, markers, stickers in my boys bags. I bought them the personalized messanger bags from Disney store online. and it was the perfect size to fit all their stuff inthere.
I have to say I took wayy too much stuff. I could have pack half the clothes, cuz DH ended up doing two loads of laundry while we were there.

Needless to say this year I am bringing only half the clothes, cuz we will do laundry while we are there.

Have a magical trip!!!! :dance3:

1 27" checked bag and one 22" rollaboard, plus a backpack/diaper bag, DS' entertainment-for-the-plane backpack, and DH's camera bag. Also a carseat and a stroller. If it is a long trip and we are also going to the beach, we will also check a hardside ice chest that is full of beach gear.

We seem to have a lot of stuff, but we use it all!

We had 4 suitcases to check (2 large, 2 medium), 2 carry on size rolling suitcases, a diaper bag, my purse and DD4's backpack. Oh, and we brought an umbrella stroller for DD4 and our travel system. DD 4 months had the most stuff by far. :rotfl:

This will be our first time flying, we drove last year! Our goal is two large suitcases plus carryons. I think it's going to be two large and one medium sized suitcases though!

I went and bought these, and I LOVE them!! They really work! I can get ALL of our clothes in our medium suitcase!!! So the other suitcase can cover all of our misc stuff and we shouldn't need a 3rd suitcase!

Don't you worry that you'll go overweight?
Our suitcases are 29" so when they're packed they weigh a ton.

The last time the 4 of us went (mom, dad, 10 yo girl, 4 yo boy) we brought:
2 biggish duffel bags, backpack for each of us to carry on, carseat (used on the plane and in rental car) and an umbrella stroller (gate checked). That was for a 10 night trip. I did laundry in the room (we stayed offsite in a 2 bedroom condo).

We are a family of 4. We bring 2 large suitcases--one is my clothes and the 2 kids clothes. The other suitcase/bag is DH's clothes, our shoes, toiletries and jackets if needed. Those 2 bags, plus their 2 booster seats, get checked.

We carry on--laptop and 1 small rolling suitcase w/snacks and activities, plus my magazines and my nice camera.

That's it for us. I HATE overpacking...what a PITA~ We do stay in a villa and do laundry every other day or so. DH does it actually. :)

I weighed the medium size and it was only 30 pounds! The clothes dont weigh much, it is all the misc stuff!!

We usually only use one large suitcase (filled with the space saver storage bags) and one carry on diaper bag. Even with the large suitcase packed to its limit, it only weighs 42-44lbs. I wouldn't worry about weight and the spacesaver bags are wonderful!

We usually take 2 large suitcases for our family of four, plus a small carry-on for each of us. Considering how many airlines are starting to charge by-the-bag for checked luggage, it seems that 2 large suitcases would be more economical that one large plus two medium.

The kids take their in-flight toys, etc. in their carry ons. I take a book, my camera, and a change of clothes for me and the kids in mine. I don't know what DH puts in his, but it's always full!

THe space bags sound like a great idea. I might need to try that for out next trip.

It has taken us years to perfect but we are finally able to travel anywhere, 4 people, 4 bags, for any length of time. We each have a large duffle, if it doesn't fit in the duffle it is not going. ;) We take an extra duffle empty to bring back souvenirs.

We each have 1 carry on:
1 - soft sided airplane approved cooler w/ sandwiches & snacks (we fly cross country to get to FL.)
1 - backpack with the electronic toys - ipods, DS games and books
1 - backpack with all the camera gear, phone chargers and extra batteries
1 - tote bag with a change of clothes for everyone in case luggage gets lost, all travel docs and itineraries etc.

Strollers get gate checked and car seats go onto the plane. When DD was too old for car seat but still in a booster we checked it with our luggage. We almost always fly Southwest which does not have bag restrictions like some of the other airlines.
