How much higher is the airfare now that taxes/fees are shown?

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the fees/taxes approximately run now that they are showing them with the price?

Southwest is showing a one-way ticket price of $136 (down from $174 earlier this week). I'm trying to decide if that's comparable to pre-Jan. 26th prices of $99? Or am I overestimating what the taxes/fees run per ticket?

Thanks!

The final, total price is no different than before, it's just that you see it up front, not just before 'check-out'. When researching future flights, I made my choices and went right to the point where money changed hands, there was the total fee. I know what you're asking, is $99 without the 'extras' better or worse than $136 all included. Perhaps someone here knows tax rates, baggage and airport fees etc, but if, pre Jan 26 you went to the end of the transaction, you'd have seen what you actually would have paid then, no need to guess. When I choose my Oct flights, I'll be seeing the total right up front and I'll compare that with what I actually paid, total, on previous trips.

You are just much more organized than I! : )
I guess I need to go dig into some credit card receipts and see what my total was on airfare. I guess I'm just remembering that when airfare, one way, got around $100 or below, I usually booked.
Trying to decide whether to book or wait it out just a month longer. I'm at 4 months out, and I previously found the best airfare between 3 and 4 months before my trip.

thanks for your help!

I do know airport fees vary based on airport. So it would be hard for someone here to tell you if the $136 is the $99 ticket + taxes & fees. I would say that's very probable, or if not, I'd say within $10.

After you select your flights, on the right side of the screen, you can click to see the details. (this is before you're commiting to buy) In our area the $120fares are $101 fares, plus taxes and fees....so close to the old $99 fares. hope that helps.

I agree with this :thumbsup2

Seems like fares are higher this year so I would be very happy to get a ticket for $136. The dates I'm watching are in the $180ish each way at the moment. I will need to book soon so I'm going to give it one more week and then bit the bullet whatever that may be.

I booked the flight there when it was $99. I did 4 people and the total was $438.80.

I just booked the return flight at the $136 price. For 4 people the total is $543.20.

Price difference of $26.10 for each person.

when I booked before the change it was $119 o/w without taxes.
Now the same flight is $136.with tax.
They are the same price:goodvibes

For flights within the continental U.S., the applicable taxes/fees that previously were not required to be included in advertised airfares are:

  • Federal excise tax - $3.80 per segment
  • September 11th Security Fee - $2.50 per segment
  • Passenger Facility Charges - up to $4.50 per segment
Thus, for a typical nonstop round-trip to Orlando, the taxes/fees are $21.60; double that if a stop is required. But the actual calculations can be a bit complicated:

  • The September 11th Security Fee and Passenger Facility Charges will only be collected twice in each direction. So if you have an itinerary that include multiple stops (for example, Boston-New York-Washington-Orlando), you'll pay $5.00 in security charges in each direction, not $7.50.
  • The maximum Passenger Facility Charges that an airport can assess is $4.50, but it can be less (or zero). Currently, 385 airports are approved by FAA to assess PFCs (including 99 of the top 100); of them, 332 have a PFC of $4.50. A notable exception is Orlando Sanford, which has a PFC of $4.00.
  • Additional taxes apply to flights to/from Alaska/Hawaii, and especially to international flights.
