How much do you tip for pizza delivery?

Wait a minute--you people tip the delivery person? :sad2:

You bet I do! I order pizza when I really do not feel like cooking and going to pick up the pizza is included in that chore. Our favorite pizza place is only 1 mile from home and we generally order 1 large. I tip $5. My friend lives down the street and she told me I was cheap....she hate picking up pizza so much that she tips $10. I want to deliver her pizza :lmao:

Seriously- this folks who are delivering really make our lives a little easier. I remember when there was no delivery for anything in my area and do not want to go back to that. I will continue to tip andn hope that it helps keep those deliveries coming.

Just a guess here because I have no first hand experience but the delivery charge is more than likely to cover liability insurance that I'm sure is required when you send a stranger to another strangers home. Domino's would be no exception. The pick up sales would not need that additional insurance so it is cheaper then delivery.

What makes a delivery experience bad? I am just asking because I don't think that I have ever had a delivery experience that I would consider bad.

General rudeness, a pizza that looks like it was carried up side down (or maybe sat on?) and the pizza arriving two and a half hours after I was told to expect it are all generally bad delivery experiences.

Around here, delivery persons are paid at least minimum wage of $7.50/hour and alot pay $10/hour to cover auto expenses. Add three or four tips to that and you're making pretty good money. For $12.49, I'd give $15 and the change is theirs. I certainly would NOT pay $5 extra for every pizza but would tip commensurate with the order size; ie, a $20-25 order, $5 tip, a $45-50 order, $10 tip... and that assumes that the food arrives timely, warm, and in good condition:)

DD works at a local pizzeria (not a chain). I would recommend tipping at least $3-$5. Just trust me on this one. The delivery person does not get paid the delivery fee, and if you ever want
another delivery, well I'll say it again, just trust me, TIP!;)

I have to ask, why don't they get the delivery fee? The only reason I could see them not getting the fee, is if the drivers were reimbursed for mileage...then, in essence they are getting the fee.

Are you insinuating the delivery people do nasty things to the pizza? Wow, just wow. If this is something you have knowledge of and never mentioned it to the owner, then shame on you. That's just horrible. YUCK!

Agreed! Also, tipping is an option, not a requirement. Yes, I tip,but employees shouldn't act this way. I am a high school teacher and one day a young boy told me he quit his bagging job at the grocery store. When asked why, he told me because he had bagged an entire large order and the lady was picky...THEN...she didn't say thank you! So, he quit!

Wow! I think I've been under-tipping. We have a $1.75 delivery fee, so I usually only give $2-3 on top of that. I assumed that they got the delivery fee for gas/ wear and tear on their car. If I were to tip $5 on top of the $1.75, I'd be better off going to pick up the pizza! I could get a small pizza or appetizer for that $6.75! I tip more if we are having a party and order a ton of pizza or if it's snowing/ raining, etc. but we usually order one large pizza and to pay the delivery fee plus a $5 tip seems outrageous to me. Now you all have me convinced to go pick up my pizza in the future!

It really depends.

But about $2 per pizza. Sometimes I tip
more depending on the weather.

Delivery charge is just for the business. I have no idea what they use it for. I think it is just an excuse for extra profit and maybe offset the wage they must pay the driver.:confused3

IMPORTANT:

Not all pizza places pocket the delivery charges. I used to work for a pizza place and all of the delivery charge went to the driver. The tip was given mostly to the driver and the driver usually gave some to the cook or cashier (the people who make the pizza, and the person who took the order). Before anyone goes all ape... poo... it's not the same everywhere.

It's should be obvious why there is a delivery charge... and it doesn't go to the restaurant's pocket. All that person is doing is taking pizzas around town. They're not doing anything in the restaurant proper. And to have someone like this, hourly wage needs to come from somewhere. Charge more per pizza and have it affect the carryout and dine-in diners? No. Only those who require delivery need to pay that person's wage, hence the delivery fee. That person is only there to take pizzas around town. Without deliveries, there would not be that position in existence and the employer wouldn't even be paying that person's wage.

The drivers do not get the delivery fee, they get a salary, their tips, and a per delivery bonus. The delivery fee goes to the owner who pays for some type of insurance needed for the actual service to deliver. I am not positive what it is, or how it works. Since DD is not a delivery person, she is not totally privy to where it all goes.

And for the HS kids comment also, at the pizzeria where she works the drivers must be over 18 and this is strictly enforced because of the insurance. They have a person who lives 3 houses from her pizzeria, and chooses delivery a few times per week. They physically walk the pizza to the house because it is so close. Even the person walking must be over 18 or the owner would get in trouble. And just like a waitress in a restaurant, if you get a good tip and the customer comes back, you get better service. Same with the delivery and that is what I was referring to.

I haven't had a pizza delievered in about a year. The tip I give depends on the order. For one or two pizzas it would 5-8 dollars. The last delivery I had was for a pizza party my boyfriend was having for Special Olympics atheletes he coaches. I tip $15 dollars for 5 large pizzas. My boyfriend had purchased 3 pizzas from another pizza restaurant that was dealing with electrical problems so he couldn't order more so he called me at home to order more pizzas to take the party.

I have known a few people who have worked in pizza delievery and I've heard the tipping horror stories. One of my family friends delivered pizzas in the mid 90's while in college and there were times he got a 50 cent tips.

Also, tipping is an option, not a requirement.

Now see, I don't feel that way. to me tipping the pizza delivery person is NOT an option. If I order a pizza and want someone to bring it to me using their car and their gas, I would never not tip. I've had family members deliver for a part time job, and in our area only about 1/2 the people tip. I find that crazy.

Domino's or Pizza Hut pays minimum wage there?

Just ordered a pizza for DD and I for lunch. Total, INCLUDING a $2.00 delivery charge is $12.49. So what do YOU tip for that? I'm thinking $2.00. I wonder if the delivery charge goes to the pizza joint or the delivery person?

I'd give the guy $15 and tell him to keep the change. The delivery charge goes to the pizza joint, not the delivery person.

We generally tip $3 for a pizza... $4 if we order breadsticks and a soda.

The last time we ordered a pizza, we had a "bad delivery experience".

It was a later in the evening pizza order, on a weekday. We had had a long day and just wanted pizza. It was close to 10pm.

The guy comes SCREECHING into our driveway in a Camaro. The pizza, as another poster described, did NOT line up. ;) To make matters worse, when we asked where our Coke was, he said, "Shoot, I forgot that." He thought we wouldn't care, but we needed a beverage to go with our food :confused3 not to mention, um... we had already PAID for it. He stared at us and asked if we wanted him to go back and get us our soda that we paid $3 for. Yes, yes we did. By the time he got back, the pizza was borderline cold, and then as he left, he PEELED out of our driveway and down the street.

He got his $3 tip. But he didn't deserve it.

$5 tip on a $15 dollar pizza? WOW! I can see this if it is raining/snowing but a nice summers day?
