How much do you tip for pizza delivery?

Wow. Hot topic. I tipped $3, BUT, I had to call to be sure thing was coming. Ended up taking 1.5 hours to get here. I know that's no fault of the driver and the pizza was hot. I truly think my order got lost and when I called...well, OOPS! Anyway, I usually pick up, but today DD and I were feeing lazy, still in our PJs at lunchtime, heck, still am, and it had been so long since I had delivery I though I'd ask. I think $3 is fair for 1 pizza :confused3

I tip around 5 dollars, like most people here. Maybe if the delivery person is awful I'll tip less.

$5 is about right. It's no biggie to me, and it probably is a biggie to the delivery person.:)

DD works at a local pizzeria (not a chain). I would recommend tipping at least $3-$5. Just trust me on this one. The delivery person does not get paid the delivery fee, and if you ever want another delivery, well I'll say it again, just trust me, TIP!;)

That is deeply disturbing. It is even more disturbing that it is obviously a known fact that this particular place participates in this behavior and nobody has done anything about it. I know it can happen anywhere (sit down restaurant, take out, delivery) but you make it sound like it is a regular occurrence. :sad2:

Depends on the delivery person. That means it could be anywhere from $3-$10...

My son works doing pizza delivery for a local place. I'm not sure if the place charges delivery. However, my son does get like 1.25 or something like that extra for every delivery he does to cover gas/cost of using the car. It isn't a lot but it does help. This shouldn't be thought of as covering the tip though. Like I said it is basically for the use of his car.

Please make sure you tip. It is greatly appreciated.

How do the restaurants justify charging delivery fees if they don't give it to the drivers? Especially a place that is based solely on delivery, like Domino's?

Anyway, I give 20%. I give less to Domino's because they are just down the street from me. I won't pick up from them because their pickup window is a joke.

I usually tip $5. I prepay with tip with a credit card. I get great service. The delivery person knows they are getting a tip before they leave.

It really depends upon the place - some places allow the drivers to keep the tip, and others don't as they let them use a car with gas in it for deliveries, as well as cover insurance.

My family has owned a pizza restaurant for 27 years, and even as the owners, we always tip the drivers. The drivers get 100% of their tips, so it's important to tip them in this regard.

Interesting to see the different amounts and such - I'll have to show my family this thread!

Tiger :)

I normally tip about $3; after reading this thread-tonite I ordered pizza and tipped him $6 and change. I used to deliver pizzas and didn't realize I was being a cheapskate!:scared1: Ugh!!! I hope I made up for it. LOL

DS21 delivers pizza for Pizza Hut in Ohio while he's in college. He pays his own gas and insurance and is putting a LOT of miles on his car. I'm not sure if there's a delivery fee, but tips really make all the difference. Please tip!

Are you insinuating the delivery people do nasty things to the pizza? Wow, just wow. If this is something you have knowledge of and never mentioned it to the owner, then shame on you. That's just horrible. YUCK!

They don't "do" anything to your food if that is what you are thinking. Your food will come slowly and most likely you would be made the last delivery on the route.

I never said they did nasty stuff to the food. You insinuated that. See post above, it's more about service. The thought of someone "messing" with the food never crossed my mind during my original post.

Here is my question: If the delivery people aren't getting a delivery fee and they never drive a company delivery vehicle, then the restraunt is just pocketing this?

Seems like someone would have made a lawsuit somewhere along the way about this. (People sue for anything).

My son worked for a non-chain pizza restaurant in high school. They charged $2 for delivery.

My son did not get any part of the delivery fee, and he used his own car and his own gas. He was paid $2 per hour and depended on tips for his income. (Two dollars didn't pay for a gallon of gas back then.)

Some people tipped him appropriately, others were cheap as hell. It was a real eye-opener for him. People that lived in really expensive homes with large orders sometimes tipped the least ($2 on a $100 order). Yet other people who only ordered a pie would tip $5.

Some people will always find a reason not to tip or to tip the appropriate amount.

Thank God he didn't stay at that job long.

When I worked at a pizzeria in high school/college (I didn't deliver, just worked at the store), the delivery drivers were given the delivery charge that was charged to the customers so I just assumed that was the norm. :confused3

So all these years I tipped the drivers based on that. Opps, now that I know better I will tip better, mainly because I know how expensive gas is and think they should get tipped above that expense. I always figured that extra $2-3 delivery fee went to them to cover their mileage (gas/wear and tear on the car).

I do tip "hazard pay"...LOL. If it's really cold/snowing/raining and I don't want to go get it myself and have it delivered I tip extra for them having to come out in the crummy weather I was too lazy to go out in.

What makes a delivery experience bad? I am just asking because I don't think that I have ever had a delivery experience that I would consider bad.

I'm not sure what the poster who mentioned poor delivery experienced, but I can say that three days ago we had pizza delivered and the boxes must have been on the seat of the car on an angle while the cheese was still very hot. The cheese on DH's pizza had all slid to one side and off that edge of the pizza. You could see the cuts in the cheese, but they no longer lined up with the cuts on the crust :rotfl:. What a mess.

We had two small pizzas delivered and tipped $5.

There used to be a poster on the DIS who managed a Pizza Hut, I think. Back when she was posting, we often had posts on what went on there. There was one post detailing how they had some record of what people tipped or they just knew who the good and bad tippers were. I don't think they ever did anything to the food but, for sure, the bad tippers seemed to be at the bottom of the list for any future great treatment. I'm almost sure this poster is still around but I cannot remember her name.
