For your monthly gym membership? Did you have to sign a contract? Any join fee?

Help me justify the cost of a new gym. ;) I am a student, and I know I should not be spending this extra money, but I REALLY want to join. ::idea:

my old gym-loved it,had steam room and was very clean, too far away, 50/month and they kept reducing hours so I could not go on weekends, had group classes which I took on occasion. Not often, but i did enjoy them. Guest pass was 10/day and my best friend would come with me sometimes to take a class. (so it was fun for a girls day, gym coffee etc I miss those!)

current gym-started at 9.99/month, now 25/month, poorly maintained, filthy locker room, I dread going and am afraid to touch anything when I do- I have stopped working out and I really miss it! Guests are free here,my best friend came once but thinks its too icky.

gym I want to join- 129 join fee, 54.99/month (with my employer & student discount) but requires 2 year agreement with 175 cancel fee if I cancel. Beautiful locker room, sauna & steamroom, cardio all has indivudual TV's, has a big lap pool that I will prob never use, and tons of exercise classes that I may or may not use. Guest passes are 20/day so we would enver use that. Oh and there is a private womens area with cardio and a huge main cardio room that is HUGE.

lol, I am telling my DF that with the swine flu epidemic, I need a cleaner environment. lol.

Help me justify, lol...... How much do you pay?

another option you might want to check out-

by any chance do you have a college or university convenient to you? we have one with AWSOME gym facilities (including some non traditional extras-rock climbing walls, indoor ice rink, olympic size heated pool) that offers free access to enrolled students but very inexpensive membership (all access during 'open hours which go as late as midnight for some areas, 24/7 for others) to students at other schools. there are water aerobic and a variety of other classes open to members. day passes are only $5 (allot of people do day passes the first month to try it out several times before they opt for membership). no sign up fee, pay monthly (and not required auto w/d from a bank account-you just walk up to the desk and pay each month).

I attend a college that specializes in HEALTH sciences and it has NO GYM! lol. Crazy right?

My wife and I pay about $75 for a 'couple' membership.

Sign up fees are ALWAYS negotiable (and they usually change every month). I would avoid a long term contract. Sometimes there is a discount for direct withdrawal from a credit card or checking account.

Choose a gym that you will go to, even if it costs a bit more.

We pay $42 a month. This gets us unlimited state of the art gym (it opened 2 months ago so great equipment, TV's on each piece of equipment, you can link your ipod to the equipment etc) unlimited classes and unlimited use of the international swimming pool (50m pool, diving boards etc), plus use of the health suite (sauna, steam room and spa.) We used to pay a lot more for the gym we used to go to which had a nice gym but the pool was small.

$10.00 a month a Planet Fitness, and my BC/BS reimburses me for the entire amount:thumbsup2

I pay yearly because its far cheaper at my gym to do that ($450 a year!, as opposed to $45 a month) with a yearly contract.

I did have a joining fee but I negotiated joining without it.

OMG -$10 a month??????? The cheapest I've ever heard is $19.99 and thats super cheap for around here. I'd love to join our local WOW (WorkOutWorld) but its $36/month. You get all the classes you want, free babysitting (only during certain hours) and a trainer twice a month. Its really want I need to lose the last 25lbs I want to lose, butI just don't have the money right now. :sad2:

I pay $33/month for DS and I (sliding scale based on income) at our really nice local Y. All FitLinxx equipment, individual tv's at each, great group classes, and my DS (13) gets to workout his own custom-designed routine as well. Now if I could just find the time to GO there!!

I go to Planet Fitness and pay $10 a month. The yearly fee is either $19 or $29, I forget. They don't have classes or a pool. They do have tons of equipment and a 30 minute circuit. I love it, and it's so very affordable.

I get a discount through work so it's pretty cheap for me. We get paid biweekly and I get $7.50 taken out of my check to cover the gym fee. Separately I pay $5 a month for a key that lets me in the center 24/7, instead of just regular business hours, and I also pay $10/month for an unlimited tanning package there.

$70 each for me and my son (yeah, that's $140 a month) but it's a really, really nice gym and includes all types of classes (yoga, spinning, tai chi etc.), 3 swimming pools, sauna, steam room, hot tub, showers with soap, shampoo, conditioner, fluffy towels....you get the picture....it's my one splurge per month.

We belong to the JCC..we get the corporate and pay $67 a month for a family of 5. It includes all fitness classes, babysitting, pool etc..It is EXTREMELY clean. The outdoor pool is wonderful in the summer:thumbsup2
Me and the kids spent the entire summer at the outdoor pool. The JCC even has towel service:thumbsup2

I pay $41.73 per month. No contract, it's month to month. That gets me access to all of their locations across the city, but I only go to two of their locations. They've got great equipment and a ton of classes which are free. No pool, but I can live with that. The locker rooms are really nice and have a sauna. I just wish they had a towel exchange, but other than that they are awesome!

Personally I would NOT join a gym that didn't offer classes....they are what keep me motivated and keep my workouts fun and unique. Plus it's a great way to meet people.

I'm from eastern PA and they recently put a "Planet Fitness" in my area.. others have mentioned this place as well!

I just joined about 4 weeks ago and love it! *NO start up fee* just month to month.. BUT there is an annual one time fee a year that occurs every June for $39.00 so $39.00 a year.. and $10 or $20 a month..
Its $10.00/month if you just want to use the gym(which has VERY clean locker rooms, great equiptment,TV's etc etc).

What I have==>For $20.00/month I get unlimited gym membership and guest privledges and unlimited tanning! Yes tanning, I am very fair skinned.. its so nice to have the tanning salon right at the gym.. also unlimited use of massage chairs which are so nice after a long workout!

So the real difference is $10.00 for just using the gym.. and $10.00 more dollars if you want to have the tanning.

Check out www.planetfitness.com see if they have one near you! Of course not only w/ the swine flu thing..but for being clean..i'm very impressed in fact they have "stations" all over the gym.. you HAVE to clean off the equiptment right after you use it.. they have a spray bottel and paper towels.. I do it every single time and so far everyone I've watched or seen does it too.. i'm sure everyone feels the same way..
