How much do you pay for kennel?

For 12 days it is going to cast me close to $400 to kennel my dog. He is staying at Best Friends Pet Resorts, which I think is a national chain.

I'm curious as to what others pay to kennel their pets. Is this a lot? Does it seem too cheap? About right?

It sure does. That is 33.33 per day. What kind of dog is he?
In my area a VERY nice kennel goes for 18.00 for small dogs up to 20.00 for large.

Every area is different. We used to pay around $24/day for a large dog. This was a great kennel. I knew of cheaper alternatives, but I am willing to pay more for excellent treatment of our baby.

Even being a great kennel, our dog did not do well in kennels. He would get so stressed, that he would end up getting sick or chewing raw spots on his paws.

We prefer using a pet sitter who comes to our house. Our dog is much more comfortable being in a known environment and enjoys the one-on-one interaction. You can check with the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (http://www.petsitters.org/) to see if there are registered sitters in your area. We found a great lady local to us through the website. On the surface, it is more expensive than a kennel (for us $30/day for two visits), but we always ended up paying for a visit to the vet after a kennel visit, so overall we like it better. Our pet sitter also brings in the mail/paper, and turns lights on/off, therefore, we get a little more than the pet care.

To board Sandi, the dog last time it was $20 per day. We also take the cats since they have gotten older and they are $11 each. For an extra playtime it is $5 per and to attend doggie day camp is $18. That is at Kennelwood. I am not sure if they are nation wide or just in the StL area, but I have been happy with the service and care of my babies.

We take our dogs over to Illinois where my dad is (2 hrs.) because there is a great & inexpensive kennel. They truly love the dogs and know them by name when I call. I know that they are getting lots of love and attention when there. The best part is, they are only $8/day per dog. They are also very involved in taking abused/abandoned animals and finding homes for them. I couldn't be happier with them.

Wow! I never realized that it could cost so much to kennel dogs. We are in the planning stages of another Disney World vacation and were thinking about putting our two dogs in a local kennel. We are on a very strict budget and to kennel our dogs would cost more than half of our trip! Now, I don't know what to do. Ugh!!

Monty is a Jack Russell. He is 7.5 months old and will be 10 months when we go. He is used to being crated during the day and basically having the run of the house & yard in the evening when we are home. He is very good about being in the crate. Because he's a JRT he needs to have plenty of excercise and space. I toured Best Friends near my house and the crates the dogs are kept in are spacious and the staff seemed attentive and knowledgable, which is why I was willing to pay a little more.

To test how he would do at the kennel we have taken him for day stays and weekend overnight stays and he has been fine. Because he is still young and chewing things, he can't have the run of the house when no one is home yet.

I have considered a pet sitter but we live in a three family house and the landlord doesn't want someone he doesn't know entering the building when we aren't there. And my other concern would be at home he would have to be crated when the pet sitter was not there (mostly for his own safety) but at the kennel he would have a much larger "crate" (his "room" at the kennel would be about 4 times as large as his crate) to play in and 24 hour security.

We're lucky in that we can take our doggy with us. Disney actually has kennels for the day if you stay on property, but we stay off property and we just crate our 7 pound dachshund and she's fine. Anyone who has a doxie knows they sleep 18 hours a day anyway.....she'd rather sleep those hours away on someones lap but she settles in with her 'baby' (stuffed animal) in her crate while we're gone to Disney and then has free roam while we are at the hotel. It cost 10.00 a night per animal, so it would get rather expensive if you had more than 2 animals, and might warrant the extra money for a kennel close to your home, but I'm glad we can take Copper with us, she loves the trip down and enjoys all the rest area chats with other doxies

You live in Boston, where everything is expensive! So although the price seems a bit high, it does not seem unreasonable to me for Boston-- if you can afford it and are happy with the kennel. you should probably just stick with the one you've found.

There might be another option, however: some pet sitters will take the pet to their own home and keep the pet there. As I am sure you already know, Tufts University's vet school is in Grafton. The tuition at this school is very high and the veterinary students graduate with a large amount of indebtedness. There might be a number of eager veterinary students who might pet sit in their own homes for a bit less. Finding someone might be hard-- you could contact the College and find out what the procedures are for getting the word out (an e-mail would be best, but they might only let you put up a flyer).

I am a professor at a College of Vet Med-- I have the world's greatest pet sitter (a vet student of course) who comes to the house three times a day for only $10-- this is a crazy-low price for 2 cats and a dog and we always pay her more than she asks for. The only problem is that she will graduate in 18 months!

Since your dog is so young you should check into having it trained while you are gone. One yr we went somewhere for two weeks, I forgot where. While we where gone we put our puppy in overnight training and it cost about the same as being kenneled.
We send ours the to a good place if we are going for a long time, for a weekend we go to a closer place which is cheaper but I don't care for it too much. Not saying that they don't do a good job but I'd rather go to the place where she will get play time for an extra $5.

I LOVE JRTs. They are the most incredibly intelligent dogs I have ever run across. We had one and we did crate her, (IMHO) the best place for them when no one is home etc.
They stay puppies and energetic FOREVER. LOL.
If you are happy with the place, then go for it. While expensive, nothing is more important than the puppy and your piece of mind.

I am SO lucky. My vet boards pets also--it's $7 a day for one dog and $10 a day for 2. We have two Beagles, Ben and Belle, and unfortunately there isn't anyone in my family, etc., that would come to take care of them. I've boarded Ben at this place several times. He comes home clean and happy!! They get exercised 3x/s a day and if you ask they will give them "the run of the yard" all afternoon. Thank God for such a good place for our pets. They are wonderful!!! Good luck to you in your decision.

We pay about $15/day for our approx 65 lb Border Collie-Austrailan Shepard mix. They call our boarding facility a doggie camp since the extra fee that we pay (normally about $10/day for her) gives her free play time out in the yard twice a day by herself with one of the attendants for about 20 minutes each time. She is much happier here than just boarding at our old vet.

I guess things are more expensive here...being on Long Island it costs us $30.00 per night to board our "baby"....she weighs in at 20 lbs. she gets in under the next price increase which is $35.00 per nite if she is 25 lbs. or over.

EmeraldX we live in the Boston Area and the best kennel we have found is Red Dog Inn in Mansfield. We pay under 400 for 15 days. Last year our dog was injured the day before we left he cut his foot. They gave him his meds but did charge 10.00 to rebandage. I must say that they are wonderful. We have bee going there for years and the owner lives in the house next to the ultra plush kennel. You have a choice of pat and chat or extra yard time. They made sure my dog was taken care of with his bandage and gave him extra pat and chat time. WE get him the regular kennel but you can go big time and get the room with the bed and the treat on the pillow before bed time. They have a pool and play area too.
