How much do you insure your cruise for?

We have 2 rooms booked. I'm finding it difficult to get cancellation insurance that would actually come close to the cost of the two rooms. One, yes, but not two. We are one family, so the insurance is sold that way, though.

I'm seeing cancellation (which is more expensive than medical for some reason) that only covers between $4000 and $5000. That's one stateroom, if we have to cancel. Now what about the other?

I should mention, I'm in Canada, so insurance may be different here, but I'm trying to get a feel for how much people cover.

I'm a little confused. When we buy our insurance they ask for cost of cruise+airfare+pre/post hotel. That's our coverage and we have a list of acceptable cancellation and trip interruption conditions. If we meet that condition, they pay us the costs we listed (minus any refunds we get).

Might be a Canada thing. When we get insurance, we put in the cost of the trip as part of the "what do you want covered" information. Possibly, you have purchase separate policies for each room? That would make sense, since each room is it's own reservation (even if you're linked/one family.

Again here in US I have always put in cost amounts so, Cruise+Air+hotel +any Land travel (if necessary). I never had to do per cabin reserved unless this is a special insurance you are getting to just cover the cruise portion or a Canadian Insurance where they do it differently.

We had to purchase two separate policies for our upcoming cruise. One for my in-laws and one for my family (although part of my family is in the in-laws room) because we are from different states. Anyhow, we have an amount per person that the cruise cost and that is the per-person covered amount. (We only insured cruise because we drive, our medical insurance and car insurance will cover us for those things before our cruise, and our hotel stay before is able to be cancelled until the last minute anyhow, so not worth the insurance for us)
The thing is, since we are all immediate enough family, an event with any one of us would qualify to cancel the cruise for everyone.

We had to do one policy for each home address, regardless of number of staterooms. So for us, that was three policies, though only two staterooms. The policy for just my mother was definitely the most expensive, percentage-wise. So insurance for one family in two rooms should be the MOST cost-effective.

Check to make sure it's not $4000/person vs. for the trip. When I've looked at insurance some things show up as the amount you get per person.
I will definitely check that out! One quote was $900 for cancellation and only $200 more for medical, but the cancellation said it only covered up to $4000. If that's for a family of 4, it makes no sense to pay a quarter of what we'd be covered for to buy the insurance and not even have 3/4s of the trip covered! I must be reading that wrong.

They do ask how many days and the cost to be covered, then there's this note that they are selling coverage up to a certain amount (between 4 and 5 thousand).

Is this on one of the comparison sites? Or on a specific company site?

Maybe some companies have a cap on what they will cover.

I haven't found a Canadian comparison site. The one I mentioned was Blue Cross, but the others all seem to have a cap, too. I think I'm going to have to talk to a broker and see what the deal is. Even my Visa insurance on my travel rewards card only covers to $5000.

It's sounding more and more like a Canada thing.

Perhaps, but it really helps to know how things work for others, so I know what I'll need to look for. Thanks.

Have you tried Insure My Trip already? Not a Canadian site, but you can select Canada as your citizenship.

We use Insure My Trip as well (a site that helps you choose what you need) and mostly always pick the company Travel Insured Intl and their plan called Worldwide Trip Protector. If our entire cruise vacation (including air and hotel) is $9634 for example, I can bump it up to most likely $10000 for the same price. Not sure if this is just a US thing or not. Good luck.

Well, I can use that site, but there are only 2 options if you've chosen "Canadian".

But wait.... it's for a cruise, what do you all put as your destination? Do I put Caribbean or do I put U.S.? Really, for me, it's both. We'll be travelling to the U.S. and then on the ship around the Caribbean.

Depends on the cruise, but either the Bahamas or I put Mexico or Grand Cayman a few times. The most expensive part of your vacay is the cruise, so you would put that.

ETA: We have to travel quite a bit to get to the port within the U.S.; that's all part of the trip. Since cruise vacations are specific, your ultimate destination is the cruise ship, so you would put whatever it allows, i.e., Bahamas, Grand Cayman, etc.

Typically they ask for the first port of call.
