How much do wood floors cost?

I know this may vary depending on what type of wood, etc, but does anyone have a rough estimate on about how much it would cost to put new, real, wood flooring in about 1500 sq ft?

Since we have been pricing it lately I know that for the flooring we are looking at which is Oak finished in a color called Gunstock costs $125 per 40 sq ft. This is a wood product that has the sub flooring attached and you can lay on cocrete base. You glue the product to the concrete. The $125 is for the flooring only and 1,500 sq ft would cost $ 4,687.50. Home depot will install it for you for $2.98 a sq foot. That would run you another $4,500 which would bring the installed cost to a little over $9,100. These are the prices from Home Depot only so I am sure you could do better elsewhere but its a starting point.

When I got my flooring done, it was $8.99 per square foot (including installation). My neighbor had it done 2 years later and the price had gone down almost $2.00 per square foot. It was a natural oak floor, with 7 coats of finish and the finish had a 25 year warranty. You can get finishes that only have a 15 year warranty (stay away) which would be cheaper and those that have a 50 year warranty that will be higher. The wood also has something to do with it. Cherry, for instance, will cost more than oak. But some run of the mill, above average grade oak was $8.99 per square foot. That works out to be about $13,500 for your area.

For those going to Home Depot, please check the finish warranties when buying floors. When I went there 3 years ago, I could get nothing above a "builder's grade" floor. You do not want this. I had to go to a flooring company to get a better floor.

Now I know that both Home Depot and Lowe's have come a long way in the last few years to offer more luxury type items so I may be off the mark on this. Just make sure.
