Does anyone know of a website wher i can find how much each of the Disney theme parks make in a year????

I'm not sure you will be able to find this information. From my understanding, the parks don't even release official attendance records like they used to, for some reason that I can't remember.

I would think if you are a share holder (stock) you could request the information...Don't know if or how quickly you would get it.

Here's the most recent quarterly report (which includes FY08 annual data).
http://corporate.disney.go.com/news/corporate/2008/2008_1106_q4fy08earnings.html

The annual report for FY08 should be out in another month or two. In the meantime you can look at the one from FY07:
http://corporate.disney.go.com/investors/annual_reports/2007/index.html

You don't get the parks individually---you do get the worldwide Parks & Resorts numbers, with some information about which locations performed well/poorly relative to the others.

The quarterlies and annuals are very interesting reading.

Thanks for the links. You were right - very interesting.

Looking at the Annual Reports that Disney releases is a good start, but if you REALLY wanna know. Go to the SEC (securities & Exchange Commission) and look at their official government filings.

Since I'm in the middle of a project using this exact database, I'll pull some numbers for you.

Well, Disney filed their 2008 annual report with the SEC on 11/20.
From 9/30/07 to 9/29/08 Disney made 37.843 billion in revenue. After expenses they actually had only 4.427 billion in total income.

This info is pretty crazy. FYI, this is the whole company, not just parks.

I'm glad that you included the disclaimer that this is the revenue for the whole company. Because people tend to forget how big the whole company is.

Theme parks (worldwide), ABC, Disney Studios, Touchstone, Disney Animation, Disney.com, ESPN, Hyperion Publishing, Disney Cruise Line, Disney Consumer Products, Disney Theatricals, Disney Channel, Jump at the Sun publishing label, Hollywood Records, Lyric Street Records, Disney Records, Walt Disney Television, Family Fun Magazine, Buena Vista Home Video, Disney Interactive, Mammoth Records, DVC, SoapNet, Miramax, Disney Stores, Baby Einstein, Club Penguin, and probably a few more I'm forgetting.

And, truly, the amount of money the theme parks make doesn't really mean anything until after you subtract how much it costs to run the place.

A little deeper dig into the 10-K show that 11.504 billion of the 37.843 billion in revenue came from parks and resorts. Segment income was 1.897 billion dollars (up 11% from 2007). Note: Total segment income does not equal total income due to items like corporate wide expenses and income tax. Total segment income was 8.456.

Quarterly data for the Quarter ended 9/29/08 showed a 4% decrease year over year.

...how many zeros are in a "bajillion"?

....and if this is the case, why are CM's paid so little?...

CMs, as a whole, are not paid "so little." Entry-level positions -- yes. Just like anywhere. But as you work your way through the ranks, you find that just about every position is at or above the industry standard for theme parks. Even the "minimum wage" jobs are paid at rates higher than minimum wage.

And, as mentioned earlier, it doesn't matter how much Disney takes in, it matters how much they have left over after they pay all their expenses. I'd be more interested in finding out how much it takes to RUN each of the individual parks -- salaries, maintenance, benefits, landscaping, transportation, laundry, fuel, fireworks, costumes, infrastructure, COGS ... all that good stuff. That would be an interesting number to see.

They take in between 3.5 and 5.5million dollars a day in just parking fees. The do between 30 and 45 million in gate admission a day.
I couldn't tell you the resort take in a given day, But with say 25,000 rooms, with an average price of 250.00 a night and 80-90% capacity.....Somewhere between 5 million and 12 million a day for resorts.

So on a daily basis: WDW takes in $60 million gross....I hear the power needs can run them a million a day, just CM salaries can run them another 2 mill a day...

the numbers are staggering....but why ruin it with the corporate side of it.

I don't know how they could possibly take in that much in parking fees. Let's do the math:

Average daily attendance at all four parks combined: ~117,000. Pretend every one of those men, women and children drove a separate car (even those who aren't old enough to drive), and pretend also that none are staying on site (therefore all pay a parking fee of $12). That would be 117,000 times $12 each equals about $1.4 million, far short of the $3.5 million you stated.

More realistically, many of the park guests don't pay any parking fee because they arrive by bus or monorail; many of those that do drive themselves to the parks don't pay because they're resort guests; and nearly 100% of park guests that do pay a parking fee when they arrive have others in the car with them who aren't paying a fee (but are included in the park visitor totals). So instead of assuming 117,000 parking fees collected, let's assume only 1/5 of that, or around 25,000 paid parking fees. (This still seems logically too high, but just for the sake of argument...) 25,000 paid parking fees times $12 per equals about $300,000 per day... or at least ten times less than the low end of your estimate.

The do between 30 and 45 million in gate admission a day.

Also way off. I won't bore you with the math, but you can't even get close to that if you assume everybody only ever purchases single day tickets at the park entrance.

I couldn't tell you the resort take in a given day, But with say 25,000 rooms, with an average price of 250.00 a night and 80-90% capacity.....Somewhere between 5 million and 12 million a day for resorts.

Again, way off. The average rate, considering how many more value and moderate rooms there are vs. deluxe, is considerably less than $250 per day.

So on a daily basis: WDW takes in $60 million gross....I hear the power needs can run them a million a day, just CM salaries can run them another 2 mill a day...

Where are you getting your numbers?

David
