How much do moving companies charge?

I have exactly the same size place as you, and it cost me $360 to move my things from a storage unit to our new place (abut 20 mi. away). Totally worth it! It took the guys about 3 hours I think...I also had them leave all the smaller boxes in the garage and only set up the big furniture for me. That saved a little time and a lot of mess unpacking since I could do it at my own pace.

In No Cal about 4 years ago, we paid $1800 to just load, move and unload our stuff. We did all the packing. They loaded the boxes and furniture, and then unloaded at the other end.

It was a bigger place than you describe, but I would still expect the charges to be more than a grand.

We just moved and the company paid for ours but I was curious so I asked and was To pack us, move us 900 miles, unload us and unpack a few boxes would have been over $10,000 Now keep in mind we had a 3300 sq ft 6 bed/3 bath house and, well frankly, we have a LOT of crap that I am now getting rid of. I was totally embarrassed as they were loading it all. We had a TON of storage at our last house, we had a huge shed plus an insulated 12X10 store room so we just kind of forgot about it. Ok that is my guilty little secret. It was all organized but it was still there.

Don't feel guilty. Our last move cost the company 29K. Whole house of furniture, tons of boxes, and a bunch of other junk that seemed to pop out of nowhere when they were loading up the vans.
They also moved one of the cars on a transporter truck.

For out of states moves make sure to get a binding - not to exceed estimate. Your move will be based on weight.

If you move locally your charges with reputable company will be hourly. Make sure to check out the companies and ask for references. Hourly rates can and will vary depending on companies. You will need 3 - 4 men for you move. When I worked in the industry, many times it would be cheaper to have the 4th. man, less time and one man would not be left "out" on the heavier furniture.

If you move intra-state (within state but not considered locally) you are charged on the weight of your shipment. Period. No-binding contracts (this is as per NYS, not sure if all other states have adapted this ruling).

Your insurance with a moving company is very minimal unless you purchase the additional insurance. IT is the largest misconception that your home owners will cover damage. Speak directly to your insurance carrier and explain exactly how the move will happen. ABC company is picking up our furniture, putting it on their truck, driving it X number of miles to our new residence, unloading the furniture into our new home. Then ask what is covered. Don't forget there could be damage to existing and new building and also your belongings.
