How much do I tip?

Ok, I am being lazy here. I know that if I looked long enough, I could find this somewhere but I thought I would just ask

We are staying at BCV, leaving this Friday We'll be there from9/26 - 10/4. It's a 1 BR and it will be me, DH, DD3 and DS18mo. Trash and towel service will be on 10/3 and full service will be on 9/29. Do I tip each time? And how much? Thanks in advance for the advice

Nothing. Housekeeping is a non-tipped position.

You will get a lot of different responses with a tipping thread. Some people tip housekeeping some don't. Some tip on cleaning day or trash and towel. Just do what you feel is okay.

I never tip mousekeeping....it's their job and lately they haven't being doing it that great anyway....jusy my opinion.

I tip $5 on trash & towel and $10 when we leave (1 bedroom). I've never stayed long enough for a full service. I figure I am blessed to have a good job, I'll help someone else out a little.

I didn't realize I'd get such mixed feelings on this. Can I ask, why the no tipping? I just thought it was the norm. I have to say, I've never tipped in the past but that was before I found the DIS. Then I felt bad after reading some threads because it seemed like everyone tipped. Now I'm confused again I realize it's up to you if you want to tip or not. Just wondering why not?

Housekeeping is not a tipped position I guess and for that reason people feel like they don't have to tip maybe?? I guess it doesn't really matter what others do....just do what you think you should or would like to. If you think it is a nice gesture....then tip. I have read on here that some people tip and get a very nice clean room and other don't tip and get the same thing. I used to always tip when staying in the Disney resorts (before DVC) and now that we have stayed as DVC members at SSR two times and BWV, OKW and BCV once...I only tipped one time when we had a problem at SSR on our first stay. Tipping threads can get controversial......so the best advice I can give is..... IT IS NOT STATED anywhere in your villa that tips are appreciated....so just use your own judgement. There are lots of tipping postions that do require tippings at WDW so you just decide if Mousekeeping should be one of them.

IMHO tipping has gotten way out of control. The employees expect it and the guests feel guilty if they don't do it.

Tipping is a reward for exceptional service above and beyond ones normal duties.

Tipping everyone all the time doesn't give anyone the incentive to do better or provide that something extra. Would you spend your time doing something extra for someone when you get a tip anyway? Most people wouldn't.

The dining plans now force you to tip so there isn't any incentive to do even a little extra. If you watch the servers in the restaurants they seem to spend more time with cash guests and less time with the dining plan guests.

nationally roughly 50% of the hotels consider housekeeping a tipped position and half don't, Disney doesn't. The issue is that the pay is structured accordingly. It's certainly your position and you could do a search for general etiquette on this subject.

Unless we have a dirty room upon entry, we always tip.

It is very rare that you can walk down the long halls at the villas and not be greeted by the maids. I am always impressed with the chin up, eye contact they give.

Use your judgement. If you feel they deserve a tip, do it.

Who is to say that your dirty room was cleaned by your current maid and are they allowed to keep the tips they are given or do they pool them?

Well, I have to say why would you? The staff make full salaries, why tip? Our son works at a convenience store and the housekeepers make more than he does. He never gets or expects tips.

Sorry to get off topic but this tipping thread (like all others before it..made me think of a few things) You know I wonder when fast food employees will start expecting tips too like at McDonalds or BK. The reason I ask this is because it seems anymore.....tips aren't worked for like they used to be but expected in today's world. I mean here where I live....the Dunkin Donuts have tip jars, there is a Chipotle that has one too. Now another one we go to does not so I guess it depends on the owners. I mean.....before long Subways, 7-11's.....grocery store clerks. The list goes on and on.

Sorry to get off topic....but tipping is always so controversial on here. I think it comes down to personal preference. Just do whatever feels right for you and your family on your trip. I know that when we had a rude bell service guy at one resort.... on a day we were switching to another resort day....I had gotten out a nice tip for what he was picking up...but after his attitude ...we took some off. Then when we checked into our other resort...we had an awesome guy so I grabbed a bit more from my wallet. Of course with housekeeping unless you are there when they service your room.....you really don't know how well they are taking care of your room.

I do not put $$ in tip jars at fast food places. I do not tip mousekeepers just because I feel guilty. I tip them because I want to. I would be willing to bet that a bell services person makes as much in tips for a 15 minute trip with a luggage cart as a mousekeeper makes in an hour. From what I've seen in some rooms when people check out, mousekeeping can also be a downright disgusting job. I don't agree with the pay system and I can't change it but my tip is my way of leveling the playing field a tiny bit.
That being said, this is a totally personal choice and whatever you decide is perfectly fine. Have a great trip!
ETA: Just looked online and found starting pay for both bell services and housekeeping is $7.75/hour, so why one is a "tipped" position and one is not is beyond me.

On the day we leave our DVC villa, I strip the beds, gather up the dirty towels and put them in the tub, gather up the garbage into one location (sometimes I'll even take it to the trash room), so the housekeeper has an easier job to get the villa ready for the next guest.

Unless they do something outstanding for me, I don't tip.

I don't tip to get better service, I tip because I want to make someone's day a little brighter, besides scrubbing out sinks, bathtubs, toilets deserves a little extra (IMO).
For DVC, cleaning day I tip $5 for a studio and $10 for a 1-bedroom. Trash and towel day I don't tip.
It really is a personal choice, not a matter of right or wrong.
