I've posted on here about doing a slide show for my grandma's 80th birthday. We are having a big party for her at a hotel. Well, I thought it would be neat to have little bits of trivia from the year she was born and maybe through out the years. I know you can buy books that show that type of information, but does anyone know of a website? The best thing I could come up with was the things that have happened on her birthday, August 15th. Thanks.

I don't know if they sold milk in a gallon back then! I found online that a half-gallon sold for .28. Here are a few other little price tidbits...

In 1926, the average salary of a public school teacher in the United States was $1,277 per year or $24.56 per week. Let us suppose that our school teacher wanted to do some baking and went to the store to buy supplies. In 1926 a five pound bag of flour cost $.30, a pound of butter cost $.54, a dozen eggs cost $.52, a half-gallon of milk cost $.28, and a five pound bag of sugar cost $.34. The grand total for the baking supplies is $1.98 which is 8.1% of the school teacher's weekly income. We will look at our average public school teacher baker every decade. The numbers for 1926 are $24.56 weekly salary, and $1.98 for baking supplies which is 8.1% of weekly salary.

Seriously, I didn't even know they sold milk by the gallon back then. I thought it was by pint and quarts.
