How much can I charge my friend per point when I transfer points to her to use?

If we have to modify a ressie to upgrade from a studio to a one bedroom or a one bedroom to a two bedroom then we charge them $10 per point used to upgrade. They know the amenities of staying in a one bedroom or two bedroom compared to a room at a moderate are huge. One brother complained about being charged for upgrading to a two bedroom and decided to book a moderate on his own...he called back a half hour later and told me to do the upgrade. It would have been $169 a night plus tax to stay at the moderate versus $100 a night for the add on.

Yeah, that's really the key.

A transfer occurs between two DVC owners -- one transfers points to the other's DVC account.

If you are using your own points to make a reservation, that's not a transfer. It's either a gift -- or if you accept payment for the points (nothing wrong with that), it's a rental.

If you are using your points for a reservation for a friend, be darn sure the friend understands that they can't just change their plans without putting your points in jeopardy.

More important -- be sure YOU understand the ramifications to your account if your friend's plans change. You don't want a nice gesture to end a friendship.

You can charge her whatever you wish. The "going rate" on the DIS is now $11-$12 per point. If they were to book a standard view at the Beach Club it would be about $860, so 65% off isn't a bad deal. I would probably charge a friend a bit less "just because", probably half way between my maintenance dues and the $12 per point.

Yes , I definitely agree. The going rate is closer to $12. It was $10 10 years ago. Has Disney been holding prices steady for 10 years? You can get them for $10, but you can also get them for $13. $11-$12 is a fair price and is still substantially lower than Disnety's rack rate.

I've rented to friends as well as via the rent/trade board. For strangers, it's the going rate. For a friend, it's $10 - it's easy to calculate for everyone and it keeps both parties on even ground - no one has to feel like they're doing the other a favor or feel like they're obliged to return a kindness later. And it's a great deal of the rack rate (not so much compared to free dining).

As others have said - make sure your friend knows that, if they wanted to cancel, maybe they could not. This is the stickiest part when renting to friends, it would be very difficult if someone could not travel due to sickness or death in the family - if you would loose your points, do you tell them they can't get a refund because "those are the rules" or eat the cost yourself? Depends on how good a friend.

He is not renting his own points. He is a broker that connects people who want to rent with owners.

We rent to friends at $10/pt. We did $9/pt. a few years back. We usually give a "friends and family" discount when we (rarely) rent points $1-$2 less than the going rate.

Actually you can rent your points, it's specifically in the contract. What you can't do is rent as a commercial enterprise.

Yeah, after rereading the original post she asks about a transfer but then, in the body of the message, describes making a reservation for a friend. That's what I saw when I read it.
