before something happens...

After 12 tardies a letter is sent home with a warning.. At 15-17 tardies another letter is sent home from the School District. At 20 you get fined and you have to appear in court.

The reason I ask is my nephews have been tardy 19 times this year. :scared1: My bil said that its only in our district that they have these rules. I went online searching last night and couldn't find any real proof of this.. So I figured who better to ask than my fellow disers.

3 tardies and they get a detention. 6 tardies and it is one day of in school suspension. After that you get out of school suspension for 9 tardies (one day). Parents are called, sent a letter or notified through the online grade book system we have after each tardy or absence.

I'll tell you the truth, I don't really know.

My DS has been tardy a few times. Maybe 3 or 4? But he's only been a couple of minutes late each time, the announcements are still going on. No one has ever said anything to him, or to me about it.

DD has only been tardy once and that was due to a doctor's appointment (excused), so I don't really know. But I can't imagine that any school would not consider that number of tardies to be unacceptable.

IMO, your bil is...well...full of it. Our school district has tardy rules as well, and the consequences can be dire. If you're looking for sources, I would think if you look up school systems for various districts/counties. Find their Students Rights & Responsibilities handbooks and attendance policies. You can even look up individual school's attendance policies.

It's really not fair to the teacher/other students when there is a chronically late student. Junior saunters in a minute late or maybe it's more like 10 or 15, he interrupts the class instruction time and this has happened 19 documented times already this school year?!?

Methinks Junior needs to get up on time. And I'm curious about something...in your opinion, are your nephews grades as good as they could be or is this chronic lateness another symptom of larger issues?

If I weren't in the house in the mornings and depending on my high school student to get themselves to school on time, by either taking the bus or carpooling and I got a letter home from the school informing me of the kids' lateness?!? Hoo boy, those kids would be in so much trouble...with ME. Your bil had already gotten TWO letters from the school, it's a little late in the game for him to be crying the blues about the school system actually enforcing its attendance policies.

Just had a thought... Are these elementary or middle school/high school students? Meaning are they responsible for getting themselves to school or are they younger students & it's Mom/Dad's responsibility?

agnes!

If they allow up to 19 tardies and the worst consequence is a letter home, I'd say they have a very lenient system.

Thanks for the replies.

My sil and bil are divorced. Yep they blame everything on eachother. The boys are K and 3rd grade. My sil takes them to school everyday. They have to be at least 5 minutes late to be considered tardy. All the kids line up in front of the school and go in as a class. If the weather is cold they line up in the very large lobby at the school. They walk to their classes all together. Now my oldest is in 5th grade and is a safety at school. He goes to class late everyday but its excused because its his job to make sure all the kids are in the building and are out of the halls. He tells me my sil drops the boys off way after everyone else has gone to class. SHe claims she drops them off on time. We all know better. Its so sad really. I feel bad for my nephews. My nephew that is in 3rd grade is now attending his 5th school. I know they are gonna pull them out of this school now too. Its a sad situation. I just wanted to know that our school wasn't the only one that had tardy rules. I really didnt' know our rules either until now since my ds10 has only been late one time since he started preschool. I know things happen but come on 19 times thats just plain sad.

Since she hasn't answered yet...it's Elementry school and the child is 9. He's in 3rd grade. :sad2:

And I've been telling her for awhile that her BIL is full of it.

It's about time you came back.

I looked for our policy, I can't find it.

I wonder if it's online...

I don't know either.

My son goes to a private school. He's allowed 3 tardies a quarter before detention. He refuses to get a dentention! :thumbsup2

So sorry about your nephews! Hope the parents to have to show up in court, someone needs to pay attention to those kids besides you & dh. Just hope you don't get dragged down with them!

This is directly from our student hand book:

 TARDINESS/EARLY DEPARTURE
A student is considered tardy if he or she is not present at the beginning of class/school. A student is not counted
as tardy if the bus is late. An early departure is when the student leaves the class/school prior to the end of the
student’s instructional day. This will count the same as a tardy.
Being late to class/or having an early unexcused departure five (5) times for all students will equal one (1) unexcused
absence to class. This may eventually result in a referral to the YMCA Status Offender Court Alternative
Program (SOCAP).

So if you are tardy 5 times, it gets counted as 1 unexcused absence and that would then go into the absence policy:

 EXCUSED ABSENCES
A student will be allowed up to nine (9) excused absences per school year (e.g. illness, medical and legal appointments,
college visits).
 NOTIFICATION TO PARENTS
1. If the parent has not contacted the school by 9 a.m., the school will make a reasonable effort to telephone the
parent of each student who has not attended school and does not have an excused absence for that day. A
parent who tells the school that a child has the flu, chicken pox, or other illness will not be contacted again
during that illness.
2. A form letter will be sent after five (5) but not more than nine (9) days of excused or unexcused absences.
3. Five (5) Unexcused Absences: Contact parent/guardian by a telephone call, letter, or parent conference.
4. Seven (7) Unexcused Absences: Contact parent by mailing the Official Notice stating upon the eleventh (11)
unexcused absence a Delinquency Affidavit will be filed, and parent should be contacted by telephone.
5. Eleven (11) Unexcused Absences: Contact parent by sending a Delinquency Affidavit to the YMCA Status
Offender Court Alternative Program (SOCAP). Notification is also sent to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Upon the occurrence of the eleventh (11) unexcused absence, the student will be designated as a “Habitual
Truant,” will be reported to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles as required by statutes, and written notification sent to
parents. A student who is identified as a habitual truant is entitled to a review once per year of his/her attendance
record. A school may file for an expulsion and a recommendation may be made for placement in an alternative
program if other options are not successful in resolving the situation.

So if your nephew was in our school district, he would have 3 unexcused absences and this close to his 4th. And depending on if he has missed any full days, would dictate on the actions the school would take.

Seems to me like that is a lot of days you can be tardy before they do anything. You have a kid who's late often, but doesn't call in sick could be late 35 days before you would get to level 4 in discipline. And to get the total max punishment, you would have to be tardy 55 times.

I know my oldest nephew was absent once and left school once for being sick. I know our school is very easy going on the absences.. I am so glad to read everyones responses..

I have been taking care of my nephews after school since the begining of the school year. I try not to get involved in what goes on IN school since I was told they have parents its "their" responsibility not mine.. Well Since mom has taken over at the end of October they have been late 19 times.. I know all the teachers at the school as my 3 kids go there as well. Well the K teacher said she isn't gonna recomend that my nephew move on to the 1st grade. Now in our area we have what is called "no child left behind" which means that if a parent disagrees with the teacher they can move their kid forward. ITs so sad really..

thats a pretty lenient policy. The high school here has a strict policy. In school suspension on the 4th. Suspension of one day for each offense after that. What kills me here is they are only allowed 5 absences per semester. Say your child is in the hospital for 5 days and has a Dr's note for that. Then even tho you had a note from a dr you have to now have an excuse from a dr or court every time your child is out. I have a child with severe stomach issues so when shes having a flare it cost me a co-pay of 30 bucks for her to miss school. I do understand being ni school is important but its almost as if we have a zero tolerance for absences. I cant imagine how some people afford to take their kids to the dr everytime they are sick.

You didnt mention of this was Elem. School . Middle school. Or high school tho.

This bears repeating.

I do understand your concerns, I really do, but they are not your children. This is something the parents need to work out. It is a sad situation, but I think I would MYOB. If you feel the kids are in danger, by all means call the authorities. Other than that, it's between the parents and the school. The teachers have NO business talking to you about the children and could lose their jobs for doing so.

Yeah they do I have paperwork giving the school permission to come to me if there is a concern so I tried to help.. But hey let the world move on..

They are family which I know would make it my concern. Gee some kids need more than the parents they have and thank goodness shes willing to be the more that they need. I would hope if my kids needed more help that someone would step in and take care of things. I dont think there are confidentiality agreements in most schools anyway.

My dd is in 4th. Her school goes through 8th grade. For the younger grades, the only policy is that 3 tardies = 1 unexcused absence. The junior high can be sent to detention for 2 tardies I think. Very lenient.

As for the school talking to you about these kids, most school employees understand that there are situations that make it necessary to talk to other family members. When my oldest ds was in junior high, he had a friend who's mother more or less moved off and left him. We allowed this boy to come and live with us for 2 years. The school knew the situation and knew that I was the only thing close to a mother the boy had at the time, so they talked to me when he was having problems. Could the mom have sued them, probably; but thank goodness they realized that I was all he had.

There are certain times when it is necessary.. I do have legal paperwork that the school can come to me.. I'm glad you were there for that boy. Its hard work..

Please keep on subject of the OP.. I am just wondering for my curisoty thats all. I'm not gonna do anything with this information.. My bil said to my dh yesterday that its only our school thats like that and my dh wanted to know if this was true.. I am not stepping in to handle this it is their parents responsibility to do so.. I am just sadened... :sad1:

Our Elememtary school has a policy that 4 tardies = an unexcused absense. 20 unexcused absenses is where the school steps in and reports it as delinquent truancy. There are a lot of steps in between, naturally. Students are allowed 10 excused absenses, after that it is unexcused.(Although, they are flexible with that...they have made exceptions for students with prolonged illnesses/injuries, etc.
