36 states plus DC

There were some I did not count.
Hawaii -- I was less than a year old and don't remember it.
Arizona -- changed planes in Phoenix and that was it
Delaware -- just drove through, didn't get out of the car and spend any time there, and didn't think that should count
West Virginia -- I remember when I was a kid visiting some family friends in VA and then going on to visit family in OH. We had to have passed through WV but I honestly don't remember stopping or much of anything about that state.

Of the ones I haven't been to, the ones I most want to visit are AZ and NM. As a kid I loved westerns and would love to visit Tombstone and Lincoln County.

For us it would be 40. In fact by the time my son was about 5 years old, he had been in 40 states.
One of the things we liked to do was to stop at the state sign of each state we were passing through (usually in the rest stop areas) and take a picture of my son with the state sign (sometimes it was required for one of us to be holding him, but if possible we would try and get him alone). Tell you in a minute... 22, I think (some of those states on my avatar are so small, I can't be sure ) plus Washington DC, not counting Illinois because I've only ever changed planes there.

I think I maybe close to a record with NC - most times in the Charlotte airport but never actually touching foot outside the airport!

I have been to 33 U.S. states as well as DC and most of the U.S. Virgin Islands. We have a beautiful country with huge variety.
