After making the thread about how much housing is in your area I thought that the average home size must be much different in other areas as well. Our home is 1,400 square feet. What is the size of your home?

Edited to add: Christine's response reminded me to ask that you exclude your basement if you have one. They don't exist in my area so I didn't think about it

My upper two floors (living areas) are 2,500 sq. feet combined. The basement, which is finished, is about 1,200 sq. feet. In this area, they never count the basement when "advertising" your square footage.

The main living area is around 3100 sq. ft, with another 1300 sq. ft. or so in the finished basement.

1200sq ft with a full basement (unfinished currently). basements do not count towards square footage here either.

3600 sq ft not including unfinished basement and 3 car garage. They do count a finished basement in sq feet here. Lots of walkout lots with finished basements.

I have a walkout lot with finished basement but they still don't include it in my square footage.

What is a walkout lot? I have never heard of this.

Our house is 2,800 square feet, but it is 3,600 if you count the garage.

The place we are buying has a little over 1400 square feet. It's just the two of us and it's our first home, no complaining!

A walkout basement is where, at least, the back side of your basement is totally out of the ground and you can just open and door and walk right out into the yard. It's the "non-dungeon" style basement.

Around her there are three types of basements:

The ones that are fully underground with no exit out (against the building codes in some counties here).
The ones where the basement is fully underground but a stairwell is carved out and you can get out--these are called "walk-ups."

And then the walk-out.

A walkout basement is a basement with windows and a door attached to the outside, that you can walk directly outside of to get outdoors. In other words, not all of your basement is underground. From the outside, it looks like you have 3 stories. Here, with a walkout, they do include it in your square footage, if finished.

Thanks for explaining. I know nothing about basements. We didnt/dont have those is AL (at least southern AL) and in FL.

We own a 3 bed semi-detached, think you call them duplex (?), here in England (South East corner near the English Channel) and our Sq Footage is 900 including the garage!

Claire ;)

Our house was over 3600 sq foot until it washed away. :teeth: We'll start to rebuild this November after hurricane season. :thumbsup2

Approximately 2,100 square feet. There are no basements in our area because we are too close to sea level.

1,950 sq ft. We have a full unfinished basement. Actually we put area carpet down on 1/2 of it and use it for DH's musical equipment and kids play area. Other half is storage.
