During our last visit to WDW, we talked to a DVC agent about buying points at a resort other than our home resort so we could book at the 11-month window. She told us we would have to buy 160 points at the second resort in order to have this booking privilege. Is this correct?

Are you a member of DVC?

If so, the minimum add on through Disney is 25 if you pay cash or 50 if you finance. If you buy at a different resort other than your home resort, these 25 points (50, however many you buy) are what you have to use at 11 months in that particular home. If you buy 25, then you can bank and borrow, so the maximum that you would have to book at 11 months is 75. It is not true that you have to buy a whole new 160 point contract to use the points at whatever the home resort is at 11 months.

If you want the same Use Year, the minimum purchase is 25 points and can be at any resort. That would give you the 11 month priority using those 25 points (and ONLY those 25 points). All of your points could be combined at 7 months to make a reservation.

If you want a different Use Year, then the minimum purchase thru DVC is 160 points - or any resale purchase.

The agent must have misunderstood that we were already DVC owners and just wanted to add on so that we could book at the 11-month window at a resort other than our home.

After reading posts here, I was sure I had been given the wrong information. Turns out I had. Thanks so much for clearing it up. Now we can go full speed ahead, knowing that we don't have to purchase another 160 points in order to get HR priority at a second resort!

I love this board!

yep. (again, as long as you're clear that if you buy a 50 pt add-on, the 11 month window is only available for those 50 pts. a lot of people are confused and expect to get the 11 month window for all the pts they own at both resorts.)

That what has kept us from adding on. If I could get, say 25 points at AKV and be able to use my whole 225 at the 11 month window, I'd get a second job for a few months just to do it. Since I'd need to get enough for the whole stay at EACH resort, it's just not worth it for us. But, any resort at WDW is fine - better than being at work!

But that's not entirely true. If you take the amount of points the stay you wish to use would be and then divide by either 2 or 3, you can have enough points to stay there every 2-3 years with banking and borrowing. When we wanted to do an add-on at AKV, we took our desired unit type and length of time and divided the number of points by 3. That means that every third year we can book our desired unit at the 11 month booking window, and we only needed to buy 69 points!

Thanks, Diane - I hadn't thought of it that way. My husband will be thrilled I have yet another Disney idea to throughly investigate!

the minimum add on is 25 points. the initial purchase min (to become a DVC Mem) is 160 points. did he know you were members? when you add on to gain the 11 month booking window at another resort, you have to buy enough points to cover the stay you are triying to book. Ex: you want to stay at AKV 10 months from now for 5 days, and its going to cost, lets say 66 points. you would need to have purchased atleast 66 points from that resort to do that. you can only purchase points in 25 point increments so you would have needed 75.
I hope this doesn't confuse you!

mmmm... unless something changed, you must add on a minimum of 25 points (cash purchase) or 50 points (financed) but it can be any 1 point amount above the minimums, for instance the 69 points mentioned, or 26, or 53...
If the add-on is a current resort, then you may find minimum add-on incentives (say 100 points) but you can still pay full price-per-point on the smaller amounts.

That is correct. While the minimum purchase is 25 points, an add-on can have any number of points 25, 26, 27, 43, 52, 77, etc. There is no requirement that the purchase be in 25 point increments. Members may add-on as many points as they wish as long as it's at least 25.

Originally the minimum at your Home Resort was 25 points or 50 points if at a different resort, but that changed years ago to the current 25 point minimum for a cash purchase, 50 if financing was desired.
