I figure this would be a good surprise for her to include in her luggage- as she likes pins but has never collected them. It would probably save me $ by buying them in advance (of our WDW trip)for her to trade, so I wouldn't have to buy them when we get there. I have about 30 to trade for myself. Should I buy her 30 as well?

Easily. Pin collectors seem to have a theory -- One can never have too many pins! ;) :jester:

She must have a MINIMUM of 30. If you don't buy her at least 30 you are a bad parent and there is no sense in her even trying to trade pins!

JUST KIDDING! I bought about 20 for DNiece(4) on our last trip, and that was more than enough for her to start in on! Just buy a couple of lots (if you're buying from EBAY) and whatever you get, you get. I'm sure she'll be thrilled whether it's 5 or 50!

I buy in advance and dole out 10 each Disney morning to each person. My oldest son and husband typically run out as they are always chasing down cast members to look at their pins. My daughter and middle son sometimes trade a few, sometimes don't even think about it. I don't trade many, but give up mine to the ones that run out.

The biggest thing for me is to keep a few stashed away in my purse. When you've run out you're bound to find the best pin of all on a CM standing right in front of you. Take more than you think you'll need. I just save any leftovers for the next trip or for inexpensive gifts.

Try cheappins.com. I bought my DD 11 from there before we left and she went through them very quickly!

I guess I am thick but I am not having luck finding disney pins on cheappins.com. How or where did you find them?

I think cheappins stopped selling Disney pins. They now sell them on eBay.

Maggie

cheappins no longer sells disney pins on their site. they now sell on ebay as rystinsales. Do a search by sellers name and you'll see their stuff, I think they sell in 20 pin lots.

My disney novice status is really going to show here but I have never done any pin trading and am just curious -- how do you "go through them" or "run out?" You don't trade a pin for a pin?

Oops sorry! It's pinshoppe.net. They have cheap pins and good for trading.

Good luck,
Lisa

cbbi,

The fun part is trading the pins you bought ahead of time, hopefully cheap, for ones that you like on other's lanyards. We stick with Cast Members, just because they will trade for any official Disney pin you have as long as they don't already have one like it. They even have special lanyards, which are green, that are restricted to trades with children ages 9 and below.

It's hard to say what makes you want a particular pin. My husband grabs anything he sees with a musical theme. I choose the ones that are unusual looking. My 5-year-old loves Lilo and Stitch. When something catches your eye, you fork over one of your pins. Naturally, you don't want to trade the "treasures" you've found, so they go home and into your pin album.

You just keep trading until you have the pins you want to keep. :)
That's one great thing about pin collecting. Decide later you don't want it? Trade it off for something else that strikes you. :)
One person's trash is another's Holy Grail.
Great family fun too. :) It's nice to see the entire family share an interest. I think that is unusual now.

I about :faint: when I saw prices on pinshoppe.net. If I could sell my pins for those prices, I would.
Go to Ebay or Yahoo Auctions and search under Disney pin lot.

Wow last time I bought from them there were pins there for 2.50 a pin. So then I trade them with CM's. Ok well I don't but my DD does. I just collect ones I like.

I bought some in Feb but haven't looked at the site since.

Sorry,
Lisa

Thank you for the info -- sounds like fun. Where is the best place to buy a lanyard? Should we buy in advance or wait till WDW?

More questions

What do the pins cost in the parks?

I thought I read somewhere about 'sets' needing to be traded as sets? How do you know what is a set? How would a set trade work?

How do you make a trade? Do you pick one you want and offer one of yours in exchange or do they get to pick one of yours?

Lanyards are all over and come in varieties.
You can have a plain black, or with specific characters dangling at the bottom.
You will see some lanyards that are thin cord. Those are CM lanyards and generally used just to hang their ID badge at the bottom in a plastic sleeve.
Just as an example:

Here is an example of what you can buy in the parks:

If you want just the pins, you can trade for them. The starter lanyard pins are on alllll the CM lanyards.
Many people buy camera straps to wear for lanyards, as they are wider, and can be padded. So many consider those more comfortable.
And you can trade for lanyards. I even have some for trade.

Scoop Sanderson (CM) provides pin trading seminars in MK Expo Hall. Almost daily at 1:00. I would ask on the collector board for verification of days and times.
He shows the proper and improper way to trade.
:)
But anyone on the collector's board will be happy to answer questions. :)
Mostly it is just be courteous and don't poke or prod at a CM's lanyard. Ask if you may see their pins to trade.
I can't say enough good about pin trading. You gain much more than shiny pieces of pointy metal.

Oh -- and in the parks pins generally range from $6.50+.
There are special, large, low limited edition pins that can go as high as $25 each. But usually pins cost $6.50.
Then when you get to extras like dangles, springs, pin on pin (3D), etc they go into $8.50 - $12.50.
Sometimes the Disney outlet stores have pins on sale. Some are $3.99, and are the same pins sold in the parks at full price. (But little variety.)
Some pins at the outlets are the same price as in the parks.
Here is a site to visit for current release info:
www.dizneypins.com
But also check out:
www.odpt.com
(The official Disney site)

Have fun!!

And when they refer to *sets* being traded as sets -- as an example -- If you have four pins that spell 2004. A "2" pin, two "0" pins, and a "4", that is a set. CMs should not accept four trades, as one pin from that set would not do anyone any good.
Same for pins that come two in a set. When two pins MAKE the pin, CMs should not accept that as a trade when a guest gives them half of what makes that set.
Just consider what you put on lanyards is what you also will get back.
