My LB (lovely bride) and I were discussing the ages of DVC members and were wondering how many people over the age of 60 buy a DVC membership for the first time. Does anyone know if there have been any surveys on this, or if any stats are available? We fit that category and are just now closing on a membership (resale) after coming to WDW twice a year since 1973.

Well, my feelings are that you should have done this 15 years ago! ;)

Personally I wouldn't do it at that age but that certainly depends on how many trips to WDW you think you have left. Hopefuly it is many more, but usually it takes about 7 trips or so to break even on the initial purchase costs. With Resale prices so very low right now, maybe it is still beneficial, especially if you go twice a year.

well right now I am 61 - but brought in 1993 - when I was 43.

there was a survey - but think it was long ago.

I know two - my friend's mom and an ex-associate from work.

We bought in 1993 when we were 38.

BUT, my sister, who is now 53, and her husband, now 57, are in the process of buying their first DVC contract.

Why did they wait so long? Even with me telling them for years the benefits?

She had her first child 3 years ago and now finally realizes DVC ownership will make great vacations for the child as she grows up, just as it worked out for our son all those years ago.

We were both in our late 50s when we bought in '03. We added on late last year, 142 points and then we were both in our 60s!

We bought on 2/15/02 at the age of 63 long after our first visit to Disney in 1983. We have gone every year since and occasionally twice a year. Sometimes with kids and grandkids and other times just the two of us. When we get settled in, we usually stay any ware from two weeks to a month. Looked at OKW when it was built but didn’t purchase until we saw BCV being built, it’s location was the right one for us, especially now when many of the activities we enjoy are within walking distance.
:thumbsup2

We bought 12 years ago when DH was 66 and have added 930 more points since then. We have loved using every point.

My mom joined in her mid 50's. My mother in law is 65 and she is just now joining. I think that for people like them who are retired and travel frequently its fine to join later. -- on another note, my DH and I joined when we were in our 20's. The age thing really wasn't what made us buy. It was just an extra perk.

While I purchased the contract with my Mom, she was 68 at the time, in 1992. She is 87 now and will hopefully be well enough for Food and Wine in November this year...depending upon how quickly she recovers form an upcoming aortic valve replacement surgery.

My parents are 71 now. We treated them with our DVC for many years, and they bought their own OKW contract about 5 yrs ago. They have 6 children, so have enjoyed having my siblings and their children vacation with them.

I joined when I was 51 yrs old and just added on at 53. BTW my trips next year will bring me to breakeven

I bought a couple of years ago at age 64. I sometimes go solo but usually take my DGS, and sometimes DD, his Mom. My reasoning in buying in after all these years of kind of wanting to, is that it will be handy for me to be on-property and we can more easily split up using WDW transportation and the car, if I need to take a mid-day break back at the resort (for so many years, I was the one with the most stamina for long park days, but that has changed unfortunately). We've been fine staying off-property (still are to some extent, altho it's nice to be on-property) -- but as my back and hip get creakier, being on- will be much easier (and I couldn't really afford it before).

My father purchased when he was 70, used it up to age 75, had a 75th birthday bash in a Grand Villa with extended family, and then passed the contract on to me! He and my mother enjoyed their trips, and enjoyed being able to pass it on to their DD! The transition of moving the contract was pretty easy.

I bought at OKW when I was 61 and usually take solo trips as I am the only Disney lover in my family. I consider it an opportunity to get away from work for a few days and let the Disney magic take over!:goodvibes

We're 60 and 65 and just did our third add-on! We have 5 kids but they rarely go with us, due to school, expenses, etc etc. We're fine going by ourselves. My sister and her daughter and two kids often join us--they're the other Disney nuts in the family--and we've taken my mom many times! Glad to see so many other Oldies-but-goodies here!

I bought in last summer at age 60..I knew that I would be retiring this summer so it was an early retirement gift to myself. My first trip will be this Jan. with extended family in a grand villa at BLT and a second trip is being planned for Sept 2012 with just two of us. I hope to have many years of enjoying Disney with friends and family.

We were 60 and 56 when we bought our first membership (100 points@ BWV) last August.

We made our first trip to BWV in January. While there, we called our guide to see how much Disney wanted for a 50 point add on. ($115 per point) She said she'd call me back. I'm still waiting.

When we returned home, I looked at resales again and bought a 55 point SSR contract with banked points.

We first wanted to join in 2004 but we waited because we didn't want to finance. We like paying cash so we saved up.

I plan on us going once a year or more, every year, for the next 20 to 30 years.

My mother (karensi) purchased DVC at age 64 I think, 420 points.
BUT, she purchased it and put it in my name with the understanding that
she comes with us on our DVC trips and stays in the master bedroom :cutie:
That was an offer I couldn't refuse :rotfl:
We are staying 1 night in a 2 bedroom at BLT next month, moving over to SSR GV for 3 nights and then doing a 5 night double dip cruise.
Our contract was loaded when we got and using all points with exception of 3for 2011
