How many people does 1 bag of chips serve?

why not get the individual serving size bags? The thought of a bowl of chips and everyone scooping out what they want off the buffet line is kind of skeevy.

I agree. Especially if kids are dipping their hands in. :scared:

I had a cookout for 42 people in May. Trying to keep costs down, I bought 3 large bags of Lay's. (We only used two, btw.) Watching the kids I was sorry I'd done it that way.

I shopped for and ran a cookout for 150 yesterday. I got the individual bags and it worked out way better. (Bought 150 bags and it was too many. Used only about half, I was surprised - apparently not everyone took chips, but then again we did have lots of other sides as well. BJ's has cases of bags 50 for around $11.)

We have very little money to do this with, so we're buying the sandwich trays and asking people to bring chips, cookies, cupcakes and sodas. I'm trying to figure out how many people I need to have bring chips.

You could ask them to bring individual bags.

Why not break it down by alphabet A-F bring chips/snacks, G-M brings a side dish, N-Z bring dessert etc. My kids swim parties are done this way, and it usually works out well. Oh- and everyone brings a 2 liter bottle.

Thanks for the responses, everybody. I'm not going to insist that people bring individual bags of chips. As I said, I'm trying to keep it simple for me because I'm the only one planning and for the people coming. If people are traveling in to the reunion and want to wait until they get here to buy the chips, they may have trouble finding a big pack of individual chips at the one grocery store in our town of 1,100 people. Besides, I honesty don't think that many people get all weirded out by chips at a party. I mean, the sandwiches and cookies are just going to be sitting out in the open too and subject to a stray touch here and there. I guess if people are grossed out by the thought that people might touch their chips, we won't need as many! :thumbsup2

lays bag says "serving size 1 ounce"

that would be a few chips on a lunch plate. not a bag next to you during a three hour movie. hehehehehe

Mikeeee

I am eating lays right now. :) it says 11 servings :rotfl:

I just talked to my step mom she caters she said she gets a 5 lbs boxes of chips for a 100 people.

In that case I would say 4 large bags would be enough.

(I know how you feel. The cookout for 150 yesterday fell into my lap last Tuesday.)

If you were Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy's cook, Rose would tell you to buy one bag - and if you bought two, you would be looking for another job..;) No limit on how many lobsters were served though..:rotfl:

Terribly eccentric woman she was.. LOL

That's a neat site - lovetoscrap - thanks for posting it

In light of all the recent hysteria about swine flu and all other communicable diseases, you might want to consider the individual bags. Some people may be skeeved by people touching their food.

Good point to bring up..:thumbsup2 Hadn't even thought of that..

I think you should figure about 4 people per bag (so about 25 bags for 100 people). However, I think chips are often easier and cheaper than desserts or sodas, so I don't think it would be out of line to have fewer people bring chips but ask them to bring 2 bags each.

Team Individual chips. I want no part of buffet chips. How would you even serve them. Its probably cheaper too. Frito Lay make a 50 pack box, either at Sam's or Costco. Its like $14. (or maybe that for the 36 pack)

They must be flavored chips. If they’re plain, I’ll pass. More for the unadventurous chip eaters.

can you ask a few people to each pitch in for the individual bags? You can try and man it all you want and have the chips served.....but the kids will always find a way to get their hands into a chip bowl.

I just googled - Sams has 50 packs of Frito Lay for $15.38.
