I have a 91 Mazda mx6 and we bought the car for the sole purpose of travling back and forth to work it gets 33 miles to the gallon ( I was putting over 200 mi a day on the car) I have had it for 3 yr and have put over 90,000 mi on it. I t has 180,000 miles. I have had no major problems with it knock on wood.

We replace my wifes car every 4 years and my vehicle every 5 years (she puts on more miles than me). Usually they have between 70,000 to 80,000 on them by then.

In our household a car is still "new" with 80,000 miles on it! Currently my van has 135,000. DH drives a Civic about 5 miles each way to work - it has 210,000. We recently took our 1990 Accord off the road because we couldn't justify the insurance premiums on it - it had about 280,000 miles on it. DH will drive a vehicle until it stops running. I become start thinking new car around 175,000 - it takes about another 25,000 miles to bring DH around to spending the $$$$.

Our cars take us from Ontario Canada to WDW every year and numerous other places we will put and average of about 40 thousnad klicks onours in a year.

My last car (Chevy Cavalier) had over 200,000 miles on it!   When my ex went to law school, it left me commuting over 100 miles to school. My brother was so angry when said ex bought himself a 65 convertible stingray before getting me a new car.

Oh, but after he left me he did have a new Nissan Altima delivered by surprise. I would have been so angry if it wasn't the car I had wanted. :p

we usually get rid of them at around 130k to 150k.

My DH has an Isuzu with about 126k on it right now. The engine still runs great but the hoses, belts and other stuff need replaced. We're debating about whether or not to put a couple thousand in repairs into it and saving it for our 14yo to drive -- or whether to just trade it in.

We haven't bought a "new" car in years though. We usually look for something with about 20k miles on it and drive it for 7 or 8 years.

Sandy, if we like a car we tend to keep them for a while. When we moved to Italy we were forced to sell one of our cars (the military only ships one) and DH's car was 10 years old and had almost 150,000 miles on it. If we didn't have to sell it we would have kept it. Then when we left Italy this time we could only ship one back and that one is my van which is 5-1/2 years old and has 90,000 miles on it. We have only had one big repair job ($1000) and just this weekend finally replaced the original brakes and we are hoping to get a few more years out of it. Our second car has only 300 miles on it as it is only a week and a half old.

I agree, if you take care of your vehicle and get regular maintenance on it you should be able to keep it for a while.

A lot. My last car was 13 years old with about 140K miles on it.

This one is 6 years old, with almost 70K on it, so I have a ways to go with it before I get rid of it.

I usually end up donating them by the time I am done with them, because I run them into the ground!

We just got a new van. The old 1989 caravan had 176,000 miles. We inherited it from my deceased sisiter. DH was plugging the leaking radiator up with bubble gum and it was time to go.

DH favorite thing to say to me is - The cheapest car you will ever own is the one you own now.

My van is a 1992 and it only has like 70,000 on it, so we will keep it awhile longer.

I drive them until they die! My car is 6 years old, 120K miles, still on the original transmission. We *plan* on it lasting the next three years here, then donating it to a school or somewhere before we move. (It's worth about $1,000 right now, so in three more years, I'm afraid I'll have to pay someone to take it!) Then we'll buy a new car for me wherever we end up. The Pilot we bought new and plan on it lasting ten years - we'd like to be able to only pay one car loan (if any!) at one time.

We also drive our cars until they start to have serious problems. I have a Honda and DH has a Subaru. It also pays to buy quality from the start. We have a great mechanic and get both cars serviced regularly. Also, like a lot of guys, my DH is really into cars and knows when something isn't right before it becomes a major issue. My car is a 1996 and has almost 60,000; DH's is a 2001 and has 40,000.

We'll probably be replacing my car in the next year or two with a minivan. My car is just too small for all of us with DD in a booster seat. Also, once she starts school it will help to have something bigger with carpooling etc.

tiggerlover...90,000 miles and you're just now replacing the brakes? I replaced the front ones at least a year ago if not longer, and mine now has 63,000.  I honestly don't remember if the back have been replaced yet. Wait! I do recall squeeky brakes and replacing them fairly recently. That had to be the back. I need to make friends with a male to make sure I'm not getting ripped off. You have to wonder. Hmmmmmmmmmm...there is that cute guy next door who suns himself on the roof. :teeth:

That reminds me of my bedroom window a golfer sent a golf ball flying through and in the room. The glass company charged me $196! Then just a couple days ago I was talking with our neighborhood president about it. I didn't mention what company I bought it from, but he mentioned that someone in our neighborhood recently had a quote of $155...it was the same company!!!   Tomorrow I will be writing that company a letter!!!!

mom2boys...still "new" at 80,000? :faint:

TigerBear! I can't believe he bought his little hot rod when you really needed a car!

We're a Saturn family here. My car is getting ready for the big 75,000 and I'd like to get another year or two out of it. DW had a Saturn with about 80,000 and decided it was time for a new car.:D

Hmmmm...

We don't have a real plan, but it seems to be around 3 years, 40,000 miles, or when we get bored- whichever comes first.

Ugh, DH has a 2001 Ford Focus with 103,000 miles and 14 more payments left. We'll keep this one until it dies (just hope we get another 14 months out of it  ). I'm not so sure we'll go with another Ford-- this one has been nothing but trouble. Prior to this car he had a 1994 Grand Am that we turned in at 189,000 miles. It would have kept going, too, if a taxi going 65 mph hadn't rear-ended it (I miss that car).

I have a 2000 Grand Am with 46,000 miles that I plan to keep as long as possible. This has been a much better behaved car, with exception of going through brake rotors a little more quickly than usual.

I've had 3 Saturns, I love them....my back up car is a 99 Saturn, it doesn't get driven much anymore since I use my new van more..just sort of sits in the driveway LOL...I will have to use that this week come to think about it before it dies sitting there!. If Saturn made a van I would have stuck with them but they only have the VUE and that is pretty small and didn't give me the room or luggage space I was looking for.

I agree. I'm used to my mini-van and thought a Vue...or anything that size...is too small. Sometimes I think a car would have more room.

The RELAY is coming, Saturn minivan on the way. Just in time for my SIL. The family went from all VW's (only 2 now), to DH's Saturn, then another sister's Saturn.

If you can wait 6 months, you can have a Saturn Minivan!
