I can't imagine only doing 1-2 loads per WEEK with 3 people in the house.
It's just DH and me in our house and I probably do 5-6 loads per week.
1. DH's work pants/shirts
2. Dark colors
3. Light colors
4. Whites (I like to use bleach, so can't just throw them in with everything else as another PP said they do).
5. Towels
6. Sheets
And occasionally an extra load or two when I want to wash blankets/throws.

A dermatologist suggested wearing pj's no more than a week before washing, but she said daily washing is definitely unnecessary.
If we are swimming at a pool or the beach towels and suits get thrown into he washing machine as soon as we get home. I even do a load of laundry every day when we are on vacation, partly for this reason.
