How many loads of laundry do you do each week?

3 people, two adults and a toddler...

I do 4-5 loads a week for us (DH wears khaki's every day, mostly and collared shirts)... sheets and towels on the weekends...

I do laundry 2x/week for DD... Her sheets get washed with ours on Saturday unless she's had an accident. (we've been dealing with a little one who doesn't like diapers, but who also isn't ready for potty training yet!)

We got our first full water and sewer bill this week. Less than $100 for the quarter, so a little over $30/month.

We went to my parents house for dinner and they happened to have their water and sewer bill on the fridge. It was almost double what ours was. This of course led to us trying to figure out why theirs was so high.

My dad made a comment about "don't you guys shower?" which of course my DH took personally, because that is the relationship they have, but that is another thread!

Just to be sure they were actual usage bills and not estimated, my dad called the city. They are actual usage. They said normal usage for 1 person is 10 units. They used 22 units and we used 8 units.

We tried to figure out the difference and we think it is the laundry. They do 7+ loads and we do 1-2. It is just the two of them and they are retired but my mom works at a shoe store. We have the 3 of us and DH works but DS and I are home.

So, that got me thinking, how many loads of laundry to you do and how many people are in your family?

Family of 4. DD is at college, but brings home two loads of laundry every week. For the three of us that are here at home, I do about 5-6 loads a week. If I decide to wash the quilts/comforters and winter coats, I probably do 2 extra loads. So for 4 people, 7-8 loads most weeks, a few extra every couple of weeks.

Some things that can lower water usage low flow shower heads and low flush toilets.

Water, sewage and trash is about $140 a quarter

Family of five - about 10 loads per week. We all have been exercising/going to the gym every day so at least two changes of clothes per day.

Family of 3 at home right now. Our average is 5 loads a week and once a month usually have an extra load for misc. stuff like afghans from the couch.

It would be 4 loads but my husband made me mad and I told him to do his own (insert swearword here. LOL) laundry so he combines all of his into one load for himself now.

When my son is home, it goes up to 6 or 7 loads.

Could the OP's parents have a leak in the main water line leading into the house? We had one and our water bill slowly jumped up until it got to the point when I noticed it and got it fixed.

We have 4 people in my house and I can easily average 2 loads a day. Sheets and towels are 5 loads alone! We have a well and septic so no monthly bills just maintenance costs.

I do about 5-6 per week, it's just my 7 year old son and I. I am a nurse and wash my scrubs separately because they are plain gross and nothing else is that blue color anyway haha. I always do a load of towels, sheets, and socks/undies. My sons clothes I usually do all together with my plain clothes as well. sometimes I split them into 2 loads depending on how many articles of non-scrub clothing I actually wore that week.

I have been so glad over the years that DH doesn't have to bring home his scrubs to wash. He works in the OR so they are covered with blood, bone, and other nasty stuff. His shoes also never leave work.

I could never understand why hospitals don't clean scrubs for all the employees so people weren't walking around after work carrying all the germs home (and to the store and wherever else they stop along the way before changing)

You guys are killing me with your numbers! It is just DH and I and some puppies. I easily do 2 or 3 loads a day!

I do 2 loads a day, easily. My teen son is a big boy and wears a school uniform, sports uniform/ practice clothes, pajamas and around the house clothes daily. Just his clothes alone measure up to a load a day.

We don't reuse towels (gross) and I wash sheets bi-weekly. For our family of three it's 14-15 loads a week.

I work in the OR as well and still have to bring them home with me! I wish the hospital cleaned them for me. Why I always wash separately. I change clothes and shoes before I go pick up my son from daycare, I can't walk into a building where babies regularly crawl on the floor when I'm that gross.

I thought all ORs provided clean scrubs to wear each day. That seems ridiculous that they expect you to thoroughly wash and disinfect them at home.

Maybe start a petition. Tell them it's an issue of patient safety


This has saved me so much laundry. He only wears his jeans in the car to/from work so he will wear one pair many days in a row.

What are you washing to have that much laundry? There are just 2 of us most of the year, and we do between 2 and 3 loads a week (we do have a large capacity washer, so we might be able to do more clothes in each load). We use towels 3 times before washing, so we average 4 towels per week, and we only wash sheets once a month. Even with DH changing each day out of work clothes and into jeans, we don't generate that much laundry.

Water bill is around $30 per month. This includes sewer charges.

Our teen does her own laundry, so 3 of us. I do one load each day, alternate whites/colors.
