My DH and I disagree on how long you can leave a dog without having a potty break. I say 6 hours. He thinks that is too long. However, my dogs go all night without potty breaks so why wouldn't they be alright for 6 to 8 hours?

I think 6 hours is fine for most dogs. I'm a SAHM and my DH works at home, so our dogs are used to constant people, but when we need to be gone for any reason we don't worry about 6 hours or so. Much longer than that and we try to find someone to let them out (8 would be ok on occasion, but that's rare--my female girl likes to go out often  ).

If it isn't a puppy, I think they can go even longer. We have left our dog 8 hours if necessary when DH and I both go to work.

we don't take blossom outside for potty breaks anymore, shes old and its hard for her to get around. we put down paper or puppy training pads. You could try that.

I think our dog goes about every 12 hours, so I wouldn't worry about 6 to 8. If I leave in the morning around 8:30am and stay gone all day until 7:00pm, she's fine - ready to go out but not dancing with her legs crossed. Lots of days I let her out in the morning and she comes back in and sleeps all day, and doesn't want to go out until late night.

Well I work full time and commute 45 minutes to work, so I leave my dog for at least 9 1/2 hours every day, and when I get home I immediately let her out, but she usually doesnt want to go , but instead will come right back in for some love. She's a big dog tho, about 80 lbs. I think little dogs might need to be let out more often.

8-10 hours, that is probably about the average. Think about it alot of people that work and have dogs that is probably about the time they have to leave their dogs in, and they do usually go at least 8 hours at night. If I have to be gone more than 10 hours I will put down the training pads for large dogs with a few newspapers under them. My dog is not unfriendly but she is very timid around strangers, her breed is very cat like in their personality.

6 hours is nothing unless you;re housebreaking a puppy I think.

My dog is really hardly ever left at home very long since I am a SAHM, but she's gone 10-12 hours if we were out all day with no problem.

Does he wake up after 6 hours of sleep to let your dog out in the middle of the night? I have to agree with you on this one, if your dog is fully housetrained and not a puppy.

I never leave Chloe longer than 8 1/2 hours - and that's only when I have no choice - but she can hold it for 11 hours. I've seen her do it numerous times when that big, bad rain is falling down.

We slowly "pushed" it with Chloe. She could hold it longer than 8 1/2 hours, but I know I wouldn't want to, so I don't expect her to do it either.

Mine are home usually 8-9 hours without a problem. And one of them is a toy breed (Shih Tzu). That happens usually 4 days a week.

I have a weekday off each week and when I'm home with them, they still don't want to go out until the "usual" time. I used to feel guilty until I started to spend the day with them. They curl up and sleep the entire time, no desire to go out and do anything.

My dog refuses to go outside when it is raining or even looks wet :rotfl: I know that she has gone at least 14-24 hours without going outside :teeth: She's so good  No accidents and she's only a year old

Especially if you're leaving a dog in a crate.

I would never leave my dog in a crate for anything over 1 hour...he has run of the living room, hallway and dining room. He hangs out on the couch and watches TV (we leave it on for him)...he holds it from 9pm until 7 am during the night so I don't feel 8 1/2 during the day is asking to much.

our lab casey is a camel of sorts....

When she was younger she would not go anywhere besides outside in OUR yard. Once my mom was dogsitting her at her house and Casey refused to go for 3 days. She also refuses to go on concrete. So i have to be very touchy about where we used to kennel her to make sure they walked her.

But as a rule, it all depends on your dog. Each dog is a little different. Now Abby would go out and go every two hours if i let her. When she was a pup we let her out very frequently and there still were a "few" accidents. She is crated during the day when we are at work. At first DH came home at lunch to let her out and then DD came home from school at 3:30 and let her out.

We don't come home at lunch now but she's fine all day.

We have a 4 lb. dog that is almost litter box trained. Lucy has the run of the kitchen that is gated. She has everything a dog would ever want including her favorite radio station. Her buddy, our cat, visits her throughout the day also to add to her entertainment pleasure. DH and I are gone from 7am until 5:30ish pm. Lucy is one happy doggie.

sorry, but anything over 8 hours is unkind.
Sorry, but I'm single, and self supporting, and have to work full time to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. Maddie's fine for well over 8 hours sometimes. She has been with me for 9 years after being abandoned by someone who couldn't be bothered to take her with them when they moved. Now THAT is unkind.
Dont be so freakin judgemental.

Yes don't you know only people that don't work should have pets, people that work should not have them.

Cribbens an Delilah have waited over 12 hours (hurricanes, then checking the yard to make sure they can go out), so I know they can do it. But, the prior year, with hurricane Jeanne, they couldn't hold it much more than 12 hours, they had accidents in the house, but they couldn't help it.

But, on an average they do wait between 8-10 hours, depending on the day of the week.
