How many DVC'rs (except for these boards) do you think are really CLUELESS ??

When I bought I knew nothing about how many points to stay. I did not know about banking. I did not know about the free tickets or anything really. I stayed there as a cash customer and just thought it was a place of millionaires, so I never checked anything out. About 6 months later I found out it cost about the price of a mid-size car to join. They sent me a video that gave 270 points as an example so I said lets buy 270 points. I never knew how many points it would cost for anything- I just liked what I saw on my cash visit and said I want to belong there.

We haven't even finalized our DVC purchase yet and I am already on this board at least once a day (usually more). I have spent HOURS learning all the ins and outs of DVC so that when we buy we can make the absolutes most of our points. My DH on the other hand (and he IS a WDW fanatic, too) is clueless -- at least when it comes to DVC and WDW trip planning in general. But that's OK -- every family only needs one obsessive-compulsive trip planner! So I can't help but think that in the unfortunate case where a whole family is clueless there is so much that they are missing out on -- and they don't even know it!!
THANKS to everyone at DIS for helping me get clued in on DVC!!:earsgirl:

If you haven't been lucky enought to come across these boards or be interested, there is probably a good amount of DVC information that you don't know. I have always thought the majority of DVC owners don't take full advantage of their memberships. Admittedly, I would be clueless, too, if I wasn't aware of the boards or take the time to figure everything out. I think it's in life as much as with DVC--people just don't bother with details. If it's one thing most of us have in common here, it's that we are very detail-oriented. If everyone took full advantage of their points, I wonder if the price of points would be higher and other perks wouldn't exist. I think DVC counts on a number of members not taking full advantage. It's part of the profit. The information is out there, but DVC isn't going to send banking reminders.

I'm hoping the OP got the ladies name, and offered 'a couple bucks a point' to have any leftovers transfered to their account! :teeth:

As a serious planner, it was only natural that I'd search out and get all the info I could. This doesn't JUST go for DVC - People spend thousands of dollars on a Disney vacation and don't plan at all. I've run into these tourists on almost every trip. Like anything, you can expect to get out what you put into it!

We have a friend that we're not sure if they are clueless or just lazy, but when they want ressies, they just email MS with their request and if MS comes back and says their request is unavailable, they just say, oh well, what we want is not available, guess we can't go. I've wanted to pull my hair out. I've told them, CALL, ask for another resort, shift the days around slightly, get on a waitlist, but NOOOO, if the email reply says it's unavailable, they don't go. Occasionally I hear them complain about owning because they never can get what they want.

That just boggles my mind, but I am OC and detail oriented! ITA that this approach extends to the other areas of their lives. Oh well, more room for us:teeth:

We're new DVC members (haven't closed yet) and are looking forward to our first trip home to SSR in September. We haven't even seen any of the properties available at WDW, but looked at DVC for over a year before taking the plunge. Much of my research was here on the DIS boards. I hope you guys know a lot about DVC or my family is in trouble!!! I check this board out every day and am learning much about how DVC works. THis has been an invaluable resource, but I still feel totally clueless. I'm sure to post many questions as we get closer to our trip. THanks for all the great advice so far. :D

I originally got on these boards for general information on DW, being a compulsive trip planner. When we went, I passed by the DVC booths dozens of times, but never stopped to check it out. After our trip, I realized that there was a DVC board, and started to go there daily, mostly for curiosity. It didn't take me long to realize that this was for me, and purchased at WLV sight unseen. I never ever would have joined if it hadn't been for the information I got here. I'm one that has to have it totally (or as close to it as I can get) figured out before I'll take the plunge. Thanks to everyone here, I did it and have never looked back.

I've used three years before, but I'd also like to know how I can use 4 years? :earsgirl: ::MinnieMo

If your use year is September and your trip begins in August and ends in September, you have the possibility of using 4 years on one trip.

One example would be for the August portion you could be using banked points from year 1 and current points from year 2. For the September portion of the trip you could be using current points from year 3 and borrowed points from year 4.

This is simply an enhancement of Dean's previous explanation.

My brother owns DVC and he is clueless! He bought because the rest of the family already owned timeshares, and he didn't want to be left out! Since then he has complained repeatedly about how hard DVC is to use because he just can't understand that "points thing". I have explained it several times, but he finds DVC "exhausting"--I've given him the disboard email address, but computers are"incomprehensible". I agree, you are only clueless if you allow yourself to be that way. I mean, how hard is it to understand that if you have a February use year, you need to use banked points by January 31?!

I'm still gasping at all the unused points that family has thrown away over the years! I'm sure there are many other "clueless" DVC members out there. I really don't think the system is that hard to understand if you take the time to read the guidebook and ask questions. However I love to plan and maximize my point usage so I made sure I understood the system even before we bought in.

I can't even imagine letting my points expire!!!

Before I came here, I knew plenty. If I invest in something to this extent, you can bet that I will know everything about it.

I don't see the board as having added to my knowledge, but more that it keeps me updated sooner than the info that comes from DVC.

Seeing as I only joined DVC in April, I have not had the opportunity to run into any other DVC'ers except here on the boards. So in my experience most people are not clueless, of course that is a very select (and well informed) group. Hope to meet some other DVC'ers at SSR later in the summer.

When I first considered buying, about 8 years ago, and ended up not buying, one of my reasons was the hassle of managing points.
Knowing my own nature, I knew that there was a reasonable chance I would just not get around to banking my points.
It would not have been due to ignorance, but due to a lack of organization.

Now, based on my vacation habits over the last 8 years, I am certain that I will most often use my points as quickly as they become available.
So having the organization skills to remember to get them banked was no longer an issue.

As far as ignorance goes, I was amazed at how ignorant I still was when I made an offer. I knew a lot because I had investigated this off and on over the last 8 years.
But I didn't know many of the fine details.
I learned many answers (from this board) before my book (the one with the real details) arrived.

I remember reading this board, the last time I was considering purchasing (I don't remember exactly how many years ago that was). and then didn't read the board again until a few months ago (when I was again considering a purchase).
again for years.
I suspect that I will likely quit reading it very soon (now that my purchase is complete and I have the book to look up the fine details).
OR maybe I will become one of those who continues to read, and answers questions for others. I don't know yet.

I think it is slanderous to state that a non DISboard DVC owner is clueless. So what if that don't know the ins and outs like people do here. In some ways those people enjoy it for what it is. A wonderful timeshare in WDW, Hilton Head and Vero Beach.

Maybe you are clueless in other parts of your life? Do you want those posted on an internet board.

Ignorance is bliss I guess.

I certainly did not mean to "slander" anyone in my original post ! I will also admit that I certainly am clueless in many areas , including many aspects of DVC !! I only have a small contract . I would be totally confused and have a lot to learn if I ever added on , had multiple use years etc !! I also realize that everyone uses their "timeshare" in different ways. I guess I was just excited to meet another DVC member in my area and was a bit surprised at our conversation. I was just making an observation that many on this board know the system well just from the transfer of info that goes on here. I didn't mean to offend anyone by any means and am sorry if I did! I am sure the lady I met had different objectives in her life that did not include the in's and out's of how DVC works and that is great , She is enjoying her WDW vacations when she goes and that's what is really important!

While we have been considering joining DVC, I've been reading everything I can about DVC on these boards and elsewhere on the net. Meanwhile, we have very close friends who recently stayed at the BC (not villas) but while there asked a CM about the Villas. They were directed to a DVC CM who offered to take them on a tour of BCV and SSR. They bought 240 pts at SSR on the spot. When I told her we had been considering joining DVC and could give her all the sites to read up on she said... "all I need to know is now we have priority to make ressies at a 2 BR." I said "there is a lot more to it than that" and she said she doesn't "need to know, or want to know anything else."

So there you have it! Jen
