How many DVC points to LIVE at WDW?

I call OKW my wife's Assisted Living Facility. Starting with the luggage yellow tags, direct flights to Orlando, Magic Express, a PAP, a Disney Gift card easily recharged, the ability to change rooms if hers is not acceptable, 2 Owner Lockers including her sewing machine and cooking gear, an iPad, her bicycle, and an outgoing personality, it is easy to understand the ability to relax.

A morning walk to and around Downtown Disney from OKW, or a bike ride to Celebration, breakfast in the room or at Olivia's, and then take the first bus you see to any of the parks. Back to hang around the pool or bar and eventually sort out fireworks for the night. Hang with friends who she has met on prior trips or this time around, and then start again the next day. Then, of course, add Food and Wine or the Flower and Garden show.

With a computer and iPad, she can keep up with her volunteer work obligations. Not to mention the massive Text Messages with pictures.

I can join her about 1/3 of the time as I have a flexible job.

As I said, this is a retirement test for us. So far, I looks pretty good.

Wow... I didn't know you could bike to Celebration from OKW. She is one lucky person... I'm jealous..

I asked her about the Celebration ride. She did it once taking some back roads and it took about 1/2 hour. More traffic than she generally likes, but the benefits once she arrived at Celebration were worth it.

Ok, I am having a sad holiday -very sick 13 year old dog :-(
Thinking about happiest place and retirement. Just for fun, has anyone figured how many points you need to live at WDW?

Your post really hit home for me. We have been hoping our 13 year old Westie would make it through the holiday. We will have her at the vet first thing in the morning. It is really sad to her feeling so bad.
We have been looking into renting a house to snowbird in the area. Last year we rented a house for a week before out DVC visit. We thought we would rent in different areas each year to see where we might like to stay for 4 or 5 months in the winter. I don't think I could stay in a studio for months at a time. I think the sofas in the villas are really uncomfortable and eating out very often would get very expensive. My DH wants to move to FL but I'm not convinced yet. I do enjoy trying out the different places and any extra time we get at Disney is good!

Our guide said that it was against the rules to stay in a hotel room longer than 4 weeks however someone just wrote on one of the forums that they were staying at OKW for 5 weeks.

Easy. Multiple reservations. No one is going to force a guest to move for a few days. I have no idea how they would behave if someone tried to stay in the same room a couple of months straight or otherwise abused the flexibility of the front desk.

I'm not sure I'm buying that one. My bet is that there are a LOT of people that stay longer than 4 weeks and that it's likely much more common place than most of us probably think (Think international travelers, especially.).

Thank you for saying that; sometimes you feel like a nut for loving your pets so much. We have to get to vet in the morning too. We have two 13 year old dogs, one is very ill. Our 14 year old cat died last month. I will just enjoy OTHER people's pets from now on.

About retirement...you know, it's funny what shifts into your priorities! Things that I NEVER saw coming! Like, transportation. We are 51 and 52 years old, and LOVE cars...it's what brought my DH and I tolgether in our teens! But we know that we won't be great drivers forever! And we like not fighting traffic. We live in Louisiana town and there's ZERO public transportation and hardly any bike lanes. Really, DVC offers awesome transportation system, great pedestrian and bike paths. Also super coffee shops. I learned when camping forever with kids how easy it is to live with microwave, refrigerator, and electric skillet. It's amazing what you can do with those items! Then there's grills at each resort for BBQ! A studio at OKW is WAY better than a camper for sure! LOL! Still researching...

We did 23 days at BLT over New Year's 2010/2011.

:
365 nights in a 1BR would require the following for January 1 - December 31, 2009:

AKV (Value) - 8990
OKW - 10,311
BWV (St) - 10, 613
SSR - 11,582
AKV (Sav) - 12,694
BWV (Pref), VWL, BCV - 12,847
a little bit complicated by ownership limitations unless you get creative:

Quote:
To encourage purchase for personal use, Club Members may not aggregate Ownership Interests so as to compile more than 4,000 Home Resort Points per DVC Resort or an aggregate of 8,000 Home Resort Vacation Points at all DVC Resorts....

sooo.... if between DH and I say we pick up about 4000pts each resort on 2 resorts... we should be able to stay there year round... :teacher:
We just have to be creative on the booking... staying only 4 weeks at a time in a resort and swap booking names every resort :lmao:

Now... let's see how we can afford the cash and MF... :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Honestly, when we stay at SSR, we always say how it would make for a great place to live. Get a nice 1br or 2br villa and live in it. its nice and clean and is really nice.

DH and I are also thinking of something similar, our biggest problem is that we prefer 1-bedrooms and the points add up pretty fast. Dh is an early riser (I mean stupid early, 3-4am) and I like my late nights, so studios are difficult.

We seriously considered a condo a few years ago but like others have said, by the time we figured in taxes, property manager for when we aren't there, etc., it seemed clear to us that more DVC was the way to go. We're at 810 points now and plan to add to over 1,000 thus affording us at least 2 months in WDW.

We love being on property, and never tire of it so it's kind of a no brainer for us.

Very similar to us, but we find a way to deal with the "one of us has bad sleeping patterns" at night. Too costly to do this using a 1 bedroom.

We are at 730 points, but hope that The Mouse is kind on our current 300 point contract offer in ROFR. I estimate 1200 to 1300 points as a solid baseline for OKW for how we envision using it.

Hey! There's an app for that! LOL! I use a sleep sound app and eye night shade (with Mickey on it!)!

LOL, that might be an answer. However, we also like having a washer/dryer and a full kitchen. I think we're just going to have to 'get real', a studio would make our points go sooooo much further.
