How many DVC folks "clean the jacuzzi tub" before using?

You all have me totally freaked out to use the tub now......UGH!!!!


I am trying to figure a way out to bring some bleach with me without ruining all of my clothes. I may have to pack a small bottle in my tolietry bag somehow.......

(actually, statistically, a typical toilet seat has less germs than a kitchen sink/counter. Scary, huh? And, the "dirtiest" location in a public rest room? Drumroll..... the exit handle! You're better off wiping your hands all over a toilet seat than touching that exit handle.)

I was appalled at the number of boys and adult men I noticed last month at WDW who would leave the restroom without washing their hands. It's just disgusting. The boys might have an excuse, but grown men? Especially when they walk out of a toilet stall and don't wash their hands. How much fecal matter is left on that door handle?

We have an outside hot tub at home and the last time we had it serviced the repairman and I were talking about public hot tubs, hotel jacuzzi's, etc. Here's what he told me........he and his wife were on vacation at a very large, exclusive resort (not Disney) and he decided one evening to use the jacuzzi....he said he of all people knows the bacteria and junk that can accumulate in the tubing and he doesn't know why he even turned the jets on......no junk came out so he got in.......they come home from vacation and a few days later he starts breaking out in this rash....within a day or so it's pretty much spreading He goes to his doctor who takes a scraping, puts him on antibiotics and cream and asks him where he's been......has he been in any public hot tubs, etc. When he told the doctor he had been in a jacuzzi in a hotel.........turns out he had a surface staph infection. So, folks, since I heard that........bleach definitely goes in the jacuzzi as soon as we get back from the grocery store. That way if we do want to use it.......I KNOW it's clean. At the risk of sounding disgusting..........would you REALLY want to take a bath with all the people who stayed in that room before you? That's pretty much what you're doing if you don't run something thru to sanitize the tubing and jets. Since bleach kills any kind of germ......that's my choice.

Our family NEVER ventures into public hot tubs for all the reasons previously listed. That being said, we have our own jacuzzi tub at home that is cleaned daily upon use and the jets bleached weekly. Last fall we stayed in a Grand Villa in OKW. Like usual, I put bleach in the tub and turned on the jets. The nastiest stuff I had EVER seen came out of those lines. There was so much dark brown greasy stuff coming out of the lines that I was shocked. In addition, the bubbles that it produced were all waxy and greasy looking and took on a life of their own. The main ingredient appeared to be make-up, so we surmised that perhaps the former guest had been a super-model that was practicing her underwater swimming skills in the hot-tub? Regardless, I cleaned the tub 3 times during my stay until the lines were clear. I never went in the tub, but at least figured that the next guest at the GV would be happy. It would be great if people that knowingly contaminate the tubs would just clean up after themselves.

This thread keeps on going. After reading these posts...I think I will NOT USE THE TUB at all at SSR or BWV while there. IT just seems TOO RISKY....rashes, staph infections, female issues. YUCK!!!!! Maybe I will do what one posted did....USE IT FOR A HAMPER. Maybe Disney should just install the big tubs minus the jets. Then we would all feel more comfortable about using them

I know this is a Disney board, but I haven't heard of very many problems at non-Disney hotels, besides what DonnaL said about the repair guy's experience. I can't imagine this is a Disney-exclusive problem.

Has anyone had problems at other hotels?

I would never let my family use a hotel jaccuzi tub. The thought of having someone elses germ come flying out at me when those jets turn on is nasty. Like bathing with stangers. I bleach mine at home weekly and the only one who uses it is my 5 year old daughter.

If I HAD to use a hotel jaccuzi for some reaon, I would only use it if I ran bleach and a rinse wash through it first. I seriously doubt housekeeping does more than wipe the insid of the tub.

Carbona makes a dry bleach pellet that is the equivalent of 1 cup of bleach. You just drop it in the water and it fizzes.

I have stored these in my Owner's Locker for laundry use, never tried it in the tub before.

Lol - it's the never ending thread with the topic that surfaces every few months!

I, personally, will NEVER turn on the jets without first cleaning out the tubes with bleach (or dish washing detergent as a back up). In fact, that is what the kids always remind me to do when we get to the room!

However, I only do that when we are in the same room for at least 5-7 days. Otherwise, it just takes too much time for the amount of time spent using it. Especially, since I have to rinse the bleach or detergent out real well also. Otherwise, the residue is irritating to my girls' skin.

If I don't rinse out the jets during the trip, when I give my girls their bath, I don't fill the tub enough to submerge the jets. Just a few inches to get bathed.

I fully understand your feelings. But.....if you're going to be realistic, the bedspread, carpet, phone, remote control, light switch, bathroom fixtures, light switches, door knobs,............................................................................................................................................................................................................ at a point you have to draw a line.

We stayed in two different rooms at SSR Aug. 15th through 19th. We were in room 1 for 2 nights not realizing we would move so I cleaned the tub with bleach....only a little bit of black came out...like two specks. So my boys and myself used this tub. Then when we switched to room 2.....I went to do the same with the bleach and THESE JETS SHOT OUT BIG CHUNKS OF BLACK GUNK. I drained that tub and IT WAS NOT GOING TO BE USED BY US. I didn't even bother checking the tub at BWV when we arrived on the 20th. LOL

I won't give an opinion because we all make up our own minds but if you choose to go the bleach route, for ANY disinfection purposes, the proper ratio is 10:1. This is standard practice. Using more does not kill better or faster. So, 1 part bleach to 10 parts water will kill MOST intruders!

We use a towle with soap then rinse with water from the tub fill spout. If you fill the tub to clean that is a lot of water, the maid will clean the tub when you check out also.
