How many boxes of Christmas Lights will I need?

I went to Hobby Lobby today to buy some Christmas Lights for the outside of our "future" house. (We won't start looking until the spring, but I couldn't pass up $2/box!) I had no idea how many to buy, so I bought 20 boxes of them. They are 25ft. long each. Then I called my mom and she told me she only used 8 boxes on her house and she did her whole roof.

How many boxes do you think you have on your house? I can always take some back if I bought too many! I know that every house will be different, but I'm looking for an estimate. We will probably buy a house that is anywhere from 2000-2500sqft if that helps.

You can never have too many Christmas lights. You don't have to use them all, but over the years they will break, go out etc.

Keep 'em. Eventually you'll use them.

We have a 2000 sq.ft.Cape. We do three 6 ft.tall pine trees in our front yard and use 12 strings.

Is your house going to be one story or two?

Think about how square footage is calculated...length times width=square feet...so maybe 40 ft. by 50 ft. would equal your dimensions if you were in a one-story house. You could get around all four sides on one level with about 6 strands.

That won't cover your bushes, any poles or trees. My Christmas tree is usually 8 ft. high and we use 7 strands of 100 lights. Think about that for your trees, if there are any in the front yard.

I think 20 boxes is great, and you'll eventually need all of them. Sometimes I don't get the lights opened for a year or two, but they all eventually get used.
