I was shocked to read in my local paper this morning that according to a study from the National Endowment for the Arts that found that less than 57 percent of people read at least one book a year in their leisure time--not for work or school. The number of adults who didn't read ANY books increased almost 24 percent.

I find it amazing that that many people don't read any books per year. I read at least one book (usually 3) per week. I'm sort of like a junkie--if I don't have at least 3 books on my nightstand to choose from, I feel really nervous. Reading is one of my greatest pleasures. And everyone in my extended family is the same way so I think that's why I'm so surprised. Everyone I know reads the same way I do...I didn't realize there were so many people that don't. It would sure explain why my house is messier than some of my friends!

So, I'm curious...how many books do you read a year?

Wow, I dont think I could even count them. I love to read...my problem is I find an author I really like and read EVERYTHING they have written and then it takes me awhile to find another author I enjoy.
My son is starting to become an avid reader and I am so happy. It took awhile buy he enjoys it now. His dad doesnt read AT ALL.

I AM SO GLAD TO FIND SOMEONE ELSE THAT READS! I READ AT LEAST A BOOK EVERY TWO WEEKS. IT IS AN ADDICTION TO ME. MY DD WHO IS 9 TAKES AFTER ME AND WE WILL SPEND FRIDAY NIGHTS AT BARNES AND NOBLE. MY DH LAUGHS WHEN I FINISH A BOOK AND I TELL HIM I AM RUNNING TO THE LIBRARY TO TRY TO GET A NEW ONE. I TOO ALWAYS HAVE BOOKS ON MY NIGHTSTAND. DURING MY LUNCH HR AT WORK, I CLOSE MY DOOR AND READ. I ENJOY GETTING UP ON SATURDAY MORNING BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE HAVING COFFEE, CANDLES LIT AND A GOOD BOOK!!!! I WILL DRAW THE LINE AND NOT BRING A BOOK ON OUR DISNEY TRIPS! I VISIT BARNE&NOBLE WEB SITE ALOT AND READ THE REVIEWS ON BOOKS AND WILL ORDER USED BOOKS WHICH YOU CAN GET SOMETIMES STARTING AT $2.00:p

I read about one to two books per week, but during vacation it can go up to one per day. I read about 75% of them in English and the rest in my native tongue German.
I also am one of the people who tend to get addicted to an author, not resting before I've read everything, i.e. Clancy, Cussler, Grisham, Wouk, Woods, Heinlein, Asimov, Harrison, Asprin, etc.

I don't have the time to read as much as I once did, but I will ususally have a book on tape in the car, and a "reading" book on my nightstand. I never realized what a luxury reading was until I went back to work full time and I had 3 kids at home. I went through several years where I never had time to read a magazine, let alone a book. Now time has freed up a little and I am back to reading more. Its like a old friend I had lost and has now come back!

Before kids I probably read one book per week.

After kids more like one book per month.

So an estimate would be 12 books a year for me, give or take a few. I love to read, so does DH, and thankfully its looking like our boys do too. :sunny:

I doubt I could even come up with an approximate number of how many book I read. I can read one a day, trouble is, once I get into a book I just can't put it down till I've finished it, then I wish I hadn't:D

Two or three books a week, give or take, depending on the subject matter.

I am tickled to hear that I have some fellow addicts! I just was so sad to read that this morning--I can't imagine life without books.

My DD always wants to go to Barnes & Noble as well. She thinks it's a huge deal. DH reads a lot as well so sometimes we'll make an afternoon of it.

Now, regarding Disney trips, I always have to take a bunch of books with me (I can't fall asleep at night unless I read for awhile first). Have you ever tried to buy a book at Disney? There are a few (very few) paperbacks in the hotel gift shops and even the Virgin store at DTD has a very limited selection. I kept telling DH that he had to slow down but he read all his books and all mine within the first 3 days we were there--then we had to hunt him down something else!

I just read a few comic strips a year

for every 'gift giving occasion' I give my mom a gift card to Barnes and Noble - knowing that she has great taste and always passes the books onto me when she's done.

i'm such a sneaky daughter.

She's big into medical/crime mysteries...those I can blaze through 2 in one week.

I read 3 harry potter books in one week once.

I think I read at least 3 or 4 books a month...sometimes I re-read old favorites...but ever since I was young, I've been a big reader.

I'm doing my Masters Degree, so I probably read at least two a month but they are to do with school. Don't really have time to read books just for fun.

I don't read as much as I used to, but I still read. Both sides of the family do and my girls do too.

I can't put a number on it either. I do school textbooks.

Just this year alone (starting in January) I have read four textbooks, with two more on the way.

Fun books I read when I have time, and I've been reading more lately.

Can't count. have one going all the time.

I average 4-5 books a week. I'm a very regular patron at our local library. Both my kids are avid readers as well. I typically bring them books back when I travel for work.

I also love to find a prolific author whose style I enjoy. Some of my favorite threads on this board are the "what are you reading now?" ones. I've picked up new authors that way!

I read while I eat breakfast (the rest of the family is still asleep), and I read at my desk at lunch. While the kids are relaxing with TV in the evening, I'm reading. And I'm a fast reader to begin with. It's very rare for me to start a book Monday, and still be reading the same one by Wednesday.

I'm in seminary, so I read about 15-20 books a semester, they are technically for school BUT I would many/most of those on my own... it's not like i"m reading biology textbooks or something. They are real books...

On the side, I only get to read for leisure during breaks and vacations, but I read about 3 a week during those times.

I think its sad people dont read more, either. I visit our library alot, too. I'm very passionate about literature and reading. =0
