And isn't that a frightening experience? On the Friday before Mother's Day, at the babysitter's when she was about seven, DD#1 was riding standing up on the back of a Big Wheel on the street (cul de sac) when the "driver" made a very sharp turn. DD fell off and the other girl ran over DD's hand. Babysitter called me immediately, I left work to take DD to the hospital, only to be "invited" to leave the room while DD told the ER doctor what happened. At first she was reluctant, which didn't look good for me, then she finally confessed that she was embarrassed to have been riding a Big Wheel and doubly embarrassed to have fallen off!
Turns out she had broken the bottom bone (closest to the hand) on her two middle fingers and all four knuckles across her hand! They set the fingers and did what they could for her knuckles and put her in a cast from the tips of her fingers up to her elbow.
We went home and I suggested that she go in her room and have a little rest before dinner. She agreed, and promptly tripped on a coat hanger she had left on the floor and fell face-first into a textured wall in her bedroom. She came out crying, bloody from hairline to chin, with a special emphasis on her nose. She was supposed to go to the dentist the next day; I called and cancelled. I didn't want to end up in jail.
DD was tidied up enough to go to school on Monday (and she wanted to show off her cast). Unfortunately, the school playground was surrounded by poison ivy (there was a barrier, but DD breached it). She came home covered from head to toe, even inside her cast. I gave her a bath in Aveeno and covered her with calamine lotion. We both stayed home the rest of the week. (My sweet boss didn't charge me vacation time - he said he was sure this was no vacation!) She couldn't get in the pool all summer and she had a funny tan

.
It's been almost 40 years ago, and I still remember the chill I got when the Dr. asked me to leave the room. Child abuse was becoming a more prominent issue right about that time, and while I knew DD wouldn't lie about what happened, I wasn't sure she'd say anything, and if she did, whether the Dr. would believe her. Thank goodness the babysitter witnessed the accident and could swear that I was at work!
Long story just to tell you I knew how you must have felt!
