How long to sign and return a contract to DVC?

We are currently holding a contract for BLT which we have not signed and returned yet. We just received it last week and it includes a cost of $115/point ($120-$5) and free 2009 points. Originally, our Guide told us they'd like it returned within 14 days (not a firm "must be returned by date"). I then received a separate letter from DVC saying they wanted it back in 7 days.

When I saw the new AK incentives that were being offered, I asked our Guide if a better incentive might be on the horizon for BLT. She said there was not at this time, but sort of suggested that we hold on to it for a bit to see if something were to change after January 31st. Hmmm. That would be less than 30 days after we put down our initial deposit, so I would think that Disney should give us at least 30 days to sign... they don't have a written deadline anywhere as far as I can tell.

She said that DVC should not start consider cancelling our contract for 60+ days for non-response. If that is the case, then I'm fine with waiting a few more days to see if the incentives improve. If I risk losing my current contract, then I would probably sign and return it.

I know that I have 30 days after I sign the contract to back out and could do that if the incentives improve, but that seems like a lot more work, not to mention a financial pain.

Has anyone gone through this? Has DVC pulled a contract because you took too long to respond? How long did you take?

I don't want to go crazy playing the incentives game, but if we could do a bit better (pay less or get more points), I am willing to hold off signing for a couple of weeks.

Thanks,
Lisa

I've held a contract for 3 weeks or maybe more without problem. DVC may call to check on it's status but they never threatened to withdraw it.

Also, it's a 10 day period to recind the contracts once you sign - not 30 days unless you are from somewhere that has special requirements. I see Illinois in your signature and I don't think they have any extended time to cancel a contract but could be wrong.

I was going to say that too.

As for how long before you return it, we took their paperwork seriously, and had it back within the timeline told to us. And then stopped looking at/reading threads about new incentives.

Disney will often cancel one incentive and wait a few weeks before announcing the next one. Depending on sales, they will also have periods of higher pricing and then "special limited time" reductions.

I just spoke with someone and they said that the 2009 points promo will expire at the end of the month. If that is a selling point for you then I would sign it. :goodvibes

That sounds a little strange since there really wasn't anything special about that. It's standard to get the current UY points (which is still 2009 for most UY's). Perhaps they're ending the "promo" b/c they will start to run into UY's that they can't do it with any more.

Either way - once you have a contract they will continue to honor that for you.

kamikazecat - hi from S. Reno! I don't see too many from NV on the boards.

It's standard procedure to get a full set of current Use Year points with a contract when buying directly from Disney when purchasing a Unit that is open for occupancy. I would think that the only people who will lose out on 2009 points as of the end of this month are those buying February Use Year contracts. As of Feb 1, 2010, they will be in their 2010 UY and any contracts purchased between Feb 1, 2010 and Jan 31, 2011 will start with 2010 UY points.

To the OP: I think you can wait a few weeks to sign the paperwork. I did that when I purchased AKV. The only risk you run is what I mentioned above -- if you are purchasing a February Use Year contract, you would probably lose the Feb 2009 points if you wait until Feb 1st or later to return your paperwork.

Let's just say it took us a lot longer than 14 days to sign the contract.

Also, I would recommend you read it for any mistakes. Ours had to be re-drawn a coupld of times and that actually buys you time as well.

My sister was at WDW right after Christmas and was offered a contract with a February UY. In my sister's opinion, the big advantage of getting a February UY is getting a full complement of 2009 points and then a full complement of 2010 points on 2/1/10. She knows its not really a "special offer", but February is the only UY where she can get so many points so quickly. Although I think a December UY would be a better UY for my sister's current vacation habits, she and her husband are wanting those "extra" points to be available to them this summer.

Whatever you do...please please please read the contract carefully! There were a TON of mistakes in it. We ended up switching guides because of it. All the numbers were wrong and so was the automatic withdrawal date...etc. We had our first "draft" contract for almost 3 weeks before I could get ahold of anyone who knew what the heck they were talking about. We FINALLY got the new contract in today and I'm sending it out tomorrow. I want this nightmare to end (we decided to purchase and put a down payment down 12/11/09!)...ugh. GL.
