How long of a walk is it...

Hi guys!

We have our first ever trip to DL planned Feb. 2009 (expect to see me ask a bunch of useless questions in the upcoming months:rotfl2: )and we are looking at hotels. I have heard rave reviews of the Candy Cane Inn on Tripadvisor but the distance to get to DL is making me hesitate...

How long of a walk is it to get from the hotel to DL resort entrance?

For about the same price I can get closer resorts(Carousel, BW, Park vue...) but CCI has such unanimous reviews I feel I can't go wrong.

So, all of you experts, what do you think?

We stayed there last august. Its about a 10 minute walk pushing a giant weighed down stroller, so not too bad. But unless you plan on using the shuttle, I'd stay at one of the closer places. CCI is nice, but nothing special. I'd take a shorter walk any day. Last trip We stayed at Park Vue Inn, right at the crosswalk. Just as nice as Candy Cane, IMO, for about $30/night less.

We just got back, and my feet can probably still answer this question for you!:lmao:
No matter how close your hotel is to the park, your tired feet will tell you at the end of the day that it is too far! Hotel shuttles are handy, but a couple of drawbacks that I could see on our walks back to our hotel...1)you are depending on another schedule to get you to and from the park 2)at closing, there is a mad rush to the shuttle area, and often a long wait if you can't all fit on that shuttle - we saw several families with young kids sleeping on their shoulders waiting for long periods for a shuttle - 15 minutes between shuttles can be a very long time while standing on tired feet with a 40 pound child in your arms!;)

Having said that, if you aren't travelling with young kids and don't mind being dependent on shuttles, or are used to lots of walking (so your feet may not be so tired), I have also been told the CCI is a fabulous hotel.

Good luck with your decision.

I'll be checking into the CCI tonight, for my 4th stay with them in the last 2 years. Its about a 10 minute walk. They have a fabulous shuttle that just serves their hotel. It runs every 1/2 hour starting before the park opens, and the last one is 45 minutes after the park closes. Because it comes so often its really not hard to plan around it. You either hustle if you are cutting it close, or mosey if you have some extra time. Rarely do we find ourselves walking. The grounds are very well kept and the rooms are cute. A but small, but cute. The property was built about a year after DL. The same family has owned it ever since. Its not a big fancy hotel, but it meets my families needs very nicely.

we were there last weekend, we loved it! about a 10 minute walk and with the shuttle being free and on time we used that as well. That shuttle at the end of the day is awesome! lol

I don't know if it would make much of a difference to you, but keep in mind CCI is on the same side of the street as Disneyland.... so that means not having to cross the street. Sometimes, waiting at the corner for the traffic and stoplights can get a little hectic too with all the people. Being on the same side of the street makes it easier if you have kids, (no navigating kids or strollers through the crosswalks). Most everything else is going to be across the street.

It is on the same side but you still have to cross where the people parking turn in, there is a light for pedestrians but you do have to cross.

It's less than half a mile. It seems like about a 4-block walk. I don't find it difficult or long at all. We've stayed across the street before, and that seemed just as long in some ways because of the long wait at the light, plus all of the hotel driveways you have to walk past.

It's also a nice walk with pretty landscaping. Just be careful if it has rained, because there are slippery metal designs on the sidewalks. (I speak from "painful" experience...:rolleyes1 )

It's also nice to have the shuttle option, which you wouldn't have with the hotels across the street.

I have been burned on this one before but here goes...

It is a good 10 - 15 minute walk depending on walking speed, it is a little over half a mile from the centre of CCI to the Security check point which is not far from the maingate.

You will still have a crosswalk across a six lane road which is the entrance to Disney parking.

I have an issue with this hotel advertising it is 250 yards from Disney because it is clearly not and friends who stayed there were very disappointed with their room and the walk as they paid more than us who stayed closer.

For all that CCI has very nice grounds, it was clean, the staff friendly, a pretty pool area and a good breakfast. It also has smaller than normal rooms, it is a Motel layout, small pool, small breakfast area.

HoJos is marginally closer and a lot cheaper, or if you want to stay in the closer hotels/motels there is BWPPI, Park Vue, Tropicanna, Carousel and Camelot to choose from.

Oh interesting! I hadnt' even thought about crossing, but I just looked at google maps and the place you have to cross is Disney Way, yes?

So while you don't have to cross the insanity that is Harbor in front of Captain Kidds restaurant, you do have to cross at Disney Way.

Good to know.

Oh I hate that all the hotels seem to advertise like that! One shouldn't have to dissect the claim that they are x feet away, vs x feet away from the entrance...it's rotten that so many of the hotels do that!!!

For anyone reading who hasn't seen it, this is a nice map giving a clear picture of where the entrance is, which allows you to choose or not choose a hotel without being taken in by possibly false claims of how far away they are.

However, that map doesn't make it obvious that Disney Way actually goes anywhere; from looking at it I had thought it just ended there, and I would have been surprised by the crossing there if I only went by this map!

There are 5 of us and the walk from the entrance of CCI is not bad at all. We always stay in the premium rooms which are located on the very back end of the property. That does add just a bit to it but in the whole scheme of things, it's negligible for me in particular. When going to the park, we might hop the CCI shuttle if it's just about to leave. If it's not, we'd usually rather not wait and just make the walk. As others have stated, the sidewalk is clean and the landscaping is nice and it makes for a nice "stroll". The sidewalk is also not right up against Harbor Blvd. For the stretch between CCI and Disney Way, there's a small buffer of landscaping that helps a little. After Disney Way, the sidewalk is nowhere near the road as it goes behind the temporary parking lot. Crossing the Disney Way parking entrance has never been a problem. Since it's not a through-road for traffic, it's not quite like a regular 4-way intersection. There's plenty of time to cross as well.

The actual time to walk from the entrance of CCI to DL depends on where you stop counting. Last December I took a picture of the CCI sign as we headed to the park. The timestamp on the picture is 9:20am. I also took a picture of the YOAMD sign on top of the turnstiles as we were just about to hand them our tickets. The timestamp on that picture is 9:36am. So, after walking to the entrance of DL, through the bus unloading area, making it through an average line at the bag check, then standing in line at the turnstiles, it was only 16 minutes. And, our bodies never feel like we shouldn't have made the walk. ;)

On the way back, you can imagine the time is much shorter since there's no standing in the turnstile or bag check lines. But, if it's at the end of a long day/night, sometimes we see if we can catch the CCI shuttle. It's a really nice option to get you that last bit of distance if the dogs are barking. Mine are always barking loudly but it's not because of the walk from CCI. It's because I'm at DL. :thumbsup2

And, for what it's worth, we've had to walk 10+ minutes from the tram to our car when we've parked all the way at the other end of the parking structure. (I can't believe how big that structure is!) Personally, that walk is much worse than walking from or to CCI. :rolleyes1

I'd go with staying closer, but that's just my humble opinion! We're giving Hojo's a try this time, because the perks really appeal to us. The Entertainment rate, being a huge one. Once that Pirate pool is completed, that will be another one. Plus the Disney View rooms sounded nice to us, and worth the extra walking. Having a shuttle, and free breakfast, no matter how nice the room doesn't really do it for us. Just all depends on what's important to you though.

We stayed at the CCI and the HOJO, distance about the same with both of them...it took less than 10 minutes for both..really not a bad walk at all, at the end of the day though of course even two minutes is too long...:lmao: When we go back next year, we will stay at one of these two again(loved them both), i am constantly telling my kids that walking is really good for us, and to be honest, after doing WDW, it took just as long to get from our motel room to the shuttle :rotfl2: ...anyways, the walk is actually quite nice, we loved it in the mornings, sun woud be out and we would all talk about what we wanted to do first...heading home, we would talk about our day and how tired we all were :cool1: :cool1:

Yes, it's Disney Way that you do have to cross, 3 lanes turning in and 3 turning out. But you do have a cross walk and the lights change quickly so it's not a big deal really. No more than having to cross Harbor. :) The walk was very pretty, lots of nice flowers and we saw a ton ladybugs!

We are frequent users of the HoJo and we thought that CCI was just about as close and nice. It was a tad bit louder because we were at the front of the hotel but it was still very nice, we will stay there again. We liked the breakfast too but wish it was available until 10 instead of just 9.
