TIA, mom!

I'm making another lame attempt at deviled eggs and can't even remember how long to boil the eggs.

I usually put the eggs in the cold water, wait until the water boils and leave them for about 10-15 minutes before I turn the heat off.

you're not trying to ruin my eggs, are you?

 We wouldn't do that to you ....... would we? :p

No, that is exactly how I do it. It is not an exact science, so if you leave them in a little longer it won't matter.

Are they really fresh eggs?

Really fresh eggs don't peel as well as older eggs do when they are hard boiled.

oh yeah i forgot the ;)

i had to dump my water since it was already boiling before i put the eggs in. i wonder if that boiling water will unclog my drain.

I AM A DOMESTIC GODDESS!!!

Boiling water will help to unclog your drain. ;)

Someone once told me, if you run your hot water, as hot as you can, for a while every day that your drain will stay clear.

Don't know for sure if it works, but I guess it can't hurt.

Oh, yeah, I forgot.....I would be happy to sample one of those eggs for you when they are ready.....just to make sure that they are okay. :p

Tiger Bear, are the yolks fully cooked?

They wouldn't need to be if you don't eat them, but if you are making devilled eggs then they have to be fully cooked.

As long as they taste good to you then you are not doing it wrong.

This is so funny....I read this thread because I honestly don't know!!!!!

I usually put them in cold water, and then boil until the water I used has decreased by half, because I've never quite figured it out. On more than one occasion I've forgotten about them, all the water boils out and I'm left with a pretty nasty mess and a ruined pan.

Please don't let my mom know...she would be so ashamed :(

yeah, make sure the eggs aren't fresh or you'll have a mess on your hands. I hate, really hate making devilled eggs and forgetting and having to use fresh eggs.

here is my version to boil eggs....my mom has done this for over 50 years

eggs in cold water...bring to boil for about 2 minutes shut off heat and cover and let sit for 20 minutes. Immediately cool in VERY cold water....ice water is better.

And yes, the older the eggs the better they peel....but the ice cold water helps too

Good link Dan.

We can always count on you for the answers to all of our "technical" questions. ;)

::yes::

yes, thanks. who knew we'd hit 2 pages on boiling eggs?

BTW how do you tell if an egg is fresh? mine peeled easily, so they must not be, but I just bought them today.

the deviled eggs were good, but I wasn't craving the onion chunks quite as much as I thought I was. I've had better.

Inquiring minds wanted to know!

edited to add: there's some test you can do for fresh eggs...something about spinning them. Anybody know that one?

I seem to remember being told that hard boiled eggs take 7 minutes. It works for me! :)

I think you can also test the freshness by putting them in water and seeing if they float.
I don't know if they are fresh when they float or fresh when they sink :p So I am not much help there!!
