and how old where you when you/family or firend had it done Just want an idea of how long this will last.

Thank you ahead of time.

ETA Mine where not impacted they had hardly started growing in yet they didn't have room for my braces to move my teeth

I had it done this august. I am 16 now but had it done 3 weeks before I turned 16.

It took about 2 hours for me because I had difficult top teeth and it took 2 weeks for me to fully recover. My face was swollen like CHIP AND DALE SWOLLEN! :scared1:
I looked like a chipmunk. Be careful about the meds they give for pain [not the ones for infection] because they are addicting and make you fall asleep quick. Like, you close your eyes and 2 seconds later you are OUT! I almost got addicted to them.

It really varies from person to person. I still have my lower wisdom teeth. My upper ones were removed when I was in my 20s. My dentist removed them in the morning, and I went out for lunch a few hours later.

Some people have deep roots, and will require a lot more surgery. They require heavy duty pain killers and longer healing times.

You just never really know.

Depends on if/how impacted the teeth are - the more impacted they are, the chances are you'll be more sore. I had mine out at 17 as did my 2 DS's. The first day can be very painful - but they do prescribe something for pain generally. Ice,ice, ice is the best thing to keep the swelling and pain to a tolerable level - have plenty of the gel packs so you can 'wear' some and have another set in the freezer ready to go. Usually by the 2nd day you'll have puffy chipmunk cheeks and some discomfort. Just be aware to not dislodge the blood clot or else you might get a dry socket - that's rather painful, from what one of my kids told me, and you might have to be seen to get the wound "repacked". I think the first day or two is the worst and it gets better quickly, if you don't get a dry socket. Your diet will be soft foods for the first couple days - ice cream was a favorite treat around here!

DD has hers out when she was 22. All four. Took 15 minutes. She was better in a week or so.

All of mine were impacted. They took out 2 at a time. With the first two I went to work that night. With the other two they hit a nerve and my face swelled. I think I went to work the next day though.

My daughter had 4 impacted wisdom teeth when she had them removed. She was 19. She ended up with a dry socket (bad spelling) so it took her a while to fully recover, about a week. She had to go back to the surgeon a couple of times. Now my son had all four of his removed (also impacted) at age 18. He recovered in much less time. In about 2 days he was ok. I think it depends of the person. Some people recover quicker than others.

Good Luck and here's to a pain-less time!!

I was 18 when I had mine out. I got all 4 done at once, and the top two were completely impacted, and the bottom two were about halfway impacted. I got it done on a Thursday afternoon, spent all day Friday in bed on pain meds, and ate some chicken broth and mashed potatoes and gravy. Saturday, I was still on pain meds and went to the water park w/DFiance and his parents.. :rolleyes1 Bad idea. Apparently either the pain meds or the anesthesia (I don't remember which) made me sensitive to the sun, and I got incredibly sunburnt. I ate grilled cheese and a chocolate chip cookie from the food stand there, which was another bad idea. I was eating regular food after about 5 days, I was just reeeally careful when eating and made sure to clean out my sockets really well afterward.

Ugh, I had the Worst Time Ever recovering after my wisdom teeth removal. I had all of them taken out in one sitting. I think I had every non-life threatening complication. First, I woke up before they were done. That was an unpleasant experience, let me tell ya. Then, after about 10 hours had passed post surgery and I still had numbness on one side of my jaw, we found out that the surgeon had nicked a nerve in my jaw. I have since regained most of my feeling in my jaw (almost 6 years later), but I had many follow-up appointments for several months after my wisdom teeth were removed; and my mouth was ultra sensitive to hot and cold for a couple of years.

Due to my prolonged numbness, I was not able to eat much, which is not a godd combination with Vicodin. Within 2 days I was vomiting from the medication. And that then led to dry sockets, which were treated with an injection of oil of clove. Yuck. Everything I tried to eat tasted like cloves. Disgusting. And, of course, the first course of antibiotics didn't work, so I had to do a second round of stronger antibiotics. I don't tolerate antibiotics well if I can't take them with food, and it was so hard for me to eat that I wasn't getting enough, so I felt sick for a majority of the time. I was out of work for a full week and still felt horrible when I returned the following week.

I'm not a drama queen with illness at all (and I hardly ever get sick) , but my body does not seem to tolerate anything out of the ordinary very well. There have been other instances with surgeries/procedures that have resulted in the same sort of outcome. I hope I never have anything seriously wrong with me because I'm afraid that my body will fight against me.

On the contrary, my sister had all four of her wisdom teeth removed a couple of years later. She called me that afternoon feeling (and sounding) fine and returned to work the following day with absolutely zero side effects.

It took me about a week to "recover"... which to me means that the swelling was down, and I could eat normally.

My wisdom teeth were impatced on bottom, but not on top. I had stitches on the bottom. I swelled up like a chipmunk, and was like that for about a week. I couldn't eat anything for about half a week, and then, slowly, as the swelling went down and I could chew, things were better. Eventually, about a week and a half later, my stitches disolved... felt like dental floss in my mouth! :rotfl:

I had mine out when i was 19 (about 14 years ago...) & it wasn't much of a big deal, i was out with friends the same night. this may have been because i was irritated that part of my holiday break home from college was being wasted on wisdom teeth, so i was determined not to let it be a big deal.

I had all four removed when I was 26. I can't remember how long it took to recover, only that I thought it wasn't a big deal at all. I had been so nervous and it was nothing. The doctor put me on antibiotics before they were removed in order to reduce the likelihood of infection. It worked, because I didn't have any problems at all.

DS had all four of his removed at age 19. He went to work the next day, although I think that was crazy.

I only had 3 and they were removed by an oral surgeon when I was 30. I didn't take anything stronger than Tylenol after the first day and I was feeling mostly normal by the next day. I can't remember how long it took me to completely recover. I did get one dry socket but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I got mine done in boot camp (3 at one time and one another) and I had a bad time of it healing. My cheekes poofed out almost farther then my head for the first 3 and it took about 2 weeks to get all the swealling and healing down. and with the last one it wasn't bad at all. It was kind of a joke in my "company" how big my cheeks got lol

My dentist had recommended that my wisdom teeth come out when I was 16, my parents couldn't afford it so I waited until I was 21 and had dental insurance. By the time I finally had the surgery my whole mouth was infected--I had to go on 2 weeks of antibiotics before they'd even touch my teeth. The teeth were all impacted and I was swollen like I had the mumps! The surgery itself wasn't bad at all--I don't remember a thing. :goodvibes But they said my teeth had long gnarly twisted roots and were difficult to remove. Afterwards I slept for about a day and I went back to work 48 hours after surgery. I had NO swelling and only one tiny little bruise. I actually looked better AFTER surgery than I did BEFORE surgery. No dry sockets, everything healed up without incident

My DS23 had his out at 17. Piece of cake. Went home, watched TV all afternoon, went to work the next morning.

DD16 is having her wisdom teeth taken out Dec 22. She only has 3 and none of them have roots yet. The oral surgeon was very pleased about that because it means that taking the teeth out will be very easy and quick. I am so glad we have dental insurance so we could get these teeth taken care of before they cause problems.

I had one that was tipped forward 45 degrees. growing into the tooth in front. As I am in the surgeons chair, he says "we are going to have to take it out in pieces"

I took pain pills the first night and nothing the next day.

I hope yours is just as painless.

Mikeeee

To above poster: My parents work in the dental industry and say it's normal practice to break them into pieces because it's easier to remove:confused3

I got them done in college- went home on a Friday, got all 4 (deeply impacted) removed and went back to school that Sunday. A couple months later we realized that they had cracked one of the molars and never told me and it was all infected... eww! :sick:That one had to be pulled too and it was covered in puss :(

i had mine done a few years ago. it honestly was NOT as bad as everyone kept making it out to be. my one best friend was telling me that she was on the floor crying because she was in so much pain, and i didn't have that problem at all.

i had it done in the morning with only the novicane, i didn't get put under any anesthetic. 3 of them were impacted in the bone and one of them had already come out(but it came in crooked so they took it out anyway). i felt nothing but my jaw get a little sore from holding it open for too long(but they just gave me more novicane and i was good to go lol!) and the dentist i had was really cool. he talked about music and hockey while he worked and he even started singing along to the radio lol.

i only bled badly for the first hour or so, and then i was done bleeding altogether after 6 hours(my DH was mad at the time because he told me that it took him 2 days to stop bleeding when he got his done lol).

and as long as i took the meds every 4 hours it really wasn't that bad. it swelled up for about 2 days, but other than that i was ok. after 4 days i felt a lot better and after a week i was back to normal.

the ONLY thing i had a problem with was, i'm already anemic and i have low blood pressure so not being able to really eat anything for almost a week left me REALLY weak i couldn't even stand up in the shower. and i was SO HUNGRY that entire week lol!

but aside from that, everything was actually pretty good. i was surprised by how it wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be. i think it depends on your pain tolerance. if you have a high pain tolerance you'll be fine.

I had four impacted ones removed at the same time and I would rather have another c-section than get that done again!! The teeth being taken out was the worst pain I was ever in my whole life (including 4 other surgeries!). I was in pain over a week and couldn't open my mouth more than 1/2 for about a month....I was 23 when I had it done. I am not a pain wimp either- day after coming home from the hospital from a c-section I was in the mall shopping...but the wisdom teeth---yuk...I don't even like to remember that!!
