How late can you cancel or reschedule your reservations

I am not a DVC member, but my brother is, and we are traveling with them on Nov. 19-21. We might have to cancel or postpone our trip. What is the latest that you can cancel or reschedule your reservations when you have used your DVC points?

THanks for the information.

There are many factors involved. If you cancel at least 31 days prior to your arrival, the points return to normal status within the use year. Points that may have been borrowed from the following use year, however, are not returned to the use year they were borrowed from and must be used by the end of that use year or lost.

Depending on when your brothers use year is, he may not be able to bank ANY of the points, as there are banking deadlines.

If you cancel less than 31 days from arrival, the points are placed in "holding status" which means 1)they must be used prior to the end of the use year, they can not be banked. 2)they must be used for ressies that are booked no further out than 60 days prior to arrival. 3)If there is no room availability during that 60 day window, you can not make ressies, and the points are lost at the end of the use year.

If you cancel on the day of arrival, all points for that ressie are considered used, and are lost.

You really need to get with your brother as the limitations he will face on the points depends upon his individual use year.

Based on your travel dates, you are already less than 31 days from your check-in date. So the rules Chuck described re: "holding status" will apply in your case. The points will have to be used (or lost) by the end of the Use Year, the reservations can only be made within 60 days of check-in. If your brother is in the early part of his Use Year (for example if he has a Sep or Oct Use Year), it won't be too bad. If he's got a Dec, Feb, Mar or even an Apr UY, it could be very difficult to use those points before they expire.

Good luck! I hope things work out for you.

As Chuck said, you really need to talk to your brother. None of us can give you anything more than general info like Chuck did.

At this late date, a cancellation (and a rescheduling IS a cancellation) would severely limit the useability of those points. It could make the points completely unusable and they'd be lost. It all depends on your brother's precise situation and only your brother can tell you what the effect on his account would be.

Thanks for the information. I will talk to my brother. I think that his use year begins in May or June.

I hope he can reschedule. Thanks again

I haven't had this situation occur, but WHAT IF...

a person had a reservation in May and a June use year....

and had to cancel the ressie within 31 days; therefore not able to bank the points or use them in a holding account that year since the year expires end of May.

WOULD THIS PERSON BE ABLE TO 'RENT OUT' THIS POINTS ON A LAST MINUTE BASIS AND CHANGE THE NAMES ON THE RESERVATION TO THE RENTER'S NAME???? or does this count as a cancellation.

Just so you know, there is a special circle in hell for people who cancel on their relatives who are members within that 30 days without really really really good reasons. We have threads that go on for pages, most members will not extend the invitation again, etc. This can be a REALLY BIG DEAL.

What I'm saying is that if this is a real emergency, most of us will understand and work with it.

If this is a "we decided we'd like to take a different vacation this year" or "we overspent on something else, knowing this vacation was coming up and are now cash strapped" you might want to brush up on your Dante.

Crisi:

Is that a 'Disney' Hell and can I get a FastPass? :furious:

To the OP:

Crisi is correct, most family members who last minute cancel, don't get invited back. I hope all is well with you and yours!

Yes - you can rent the reservation.

All you need to do is call MS to change the names on the reservation. That is not considered a cancellation.

It can be difficult to find someone at the last minute and payment can also be a problem (due to short notice), but something is better than nothing - which is what you'd have if you couldn't rent the reservation.

Best wishes -

And yes, I am sure that many believe that I have a Front Of the Line FastPass for 'Disney Hell!"

Happy Holidays!

Agreed... You don't want to be banished to Disney HELL! Not even sure what that involves...? Best case is you are put on the naughty list and you don't know what your punishment will be. Don't ever expect your relatives to feel just OK about this. They are now DVC'rs and planning is everything. Hope everything works out for you all.
