:confused3 I understand that anyone can buy from the timeshare store, but how do you make reservations if you are not a DVC member. How do the people who are not members, and buy points, do this without a DVC membership? :teacher:

DVC members are allowed to rent reservations made using their points to anyone they choose. Non-members are able to find DVC accommodations at very competitive prices this way. Many have had great success using the DVC Rent/Trade Board right here on the DIS.

The non-member can request their dates and the member is able to make them in the name of the non-member renter. The member will always maintain control of the reservation - right up until arrival at the resort. The non-member is NOT renting any points, only a reservation made using those points.

Doc, my question is about buying a contract from the timeshare store. If you are not a member of DVC and buy a contract, how do you make a reservation?

Once you buy and have the contract changed over to your name with DVC, you are then a member.

I guess I don't understand the question. If you purchase a resale contract, you will be a DVC Member and can make reservations thru MS just like all other members.

Resale purchases have all of the benefits of ownership in DVC.

Once you close on your resale, Disney will be informed by your broker of the change in ownership and, within about a week, your name will appear in Disney's rolls as an official member and you will be given a DVC member number and then you can makes ressies.

The title "Disney Vacation CLUB" is probably something of a misnomer. In reality, DVC is little more than the timeshare management company. All timeshares have some management entity in place to arrange reservations, manage the housekeeping staff, and generally oversee the property.

In the case of DVC, acquiring any ownership interest makes you a "member." That ownership interest can be acquired either direct from DVC or on the resale market.

You might be confusing renting points and buying points.

You would rent points from a current member for a single specific, one time, reservation. This does not make you a member. The person you rent from remains the member, and makes a reservation in your name for you. You yourself do not make the reservation.

If you buy points, you are purchasing real estate at WDW and have a membership that goes until 2042 (or 2054 if it's SSR), and you get points every year to use for your vacations. You will have annual dues on those points which are payable every year.

When you buy points, you are buying a membership.
You make your own reservations yourself through your own membership.

Hope that helps.

And the timeshare store resells memberships (i.e. DVC contracts), they don't rent points.

Sorry. I must not have made my question clear enough. I did not know that when you bought a timeshare contract, you automatically became a member. I thought you could only do that thru Disney and then add on via Timeshare store. Did not realize you could be a DVC member without having the required 150 points being purchased. Thanks. :rolleyes1

First time purchases made thru Disney do have the minimum requirement of 150 points. Resale purchases can be as small as 25 point contracts (these would have originally been an add-on), but the buyer will still be a DVC member even though they have fewer than 150. They can make reservations, bank/borrow and also purchase add-ons thru DVC (25 point minimum).
