How is the DIS bankrupting you?

A while back there was a post about how being on the disboards negatively affected your planning (as in, you knew too much which caused problems). Allow me to create an offshoot to that - how are the Dis boards causing you to buy more than you should. Allow me to give you an example ...

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was told I needed Frog Togs to successfully navigate any Disney vacation. This was by a real life person. Ok, Frog Togs. :thumbsup2 Except said Frog Togs were heavy, bulky, and were worn a grand total of 30 mins the entire trip. Oh well. Live and learn. But what exactly have I learned (now that I have the disboards)? Ahh, let me tell you.

I learned about good athletic sandals, whose existence I was only vaguely aware of before I asked (yes, I asked, my own fault, I know). Now I own 4 pairs of them (but I got them on sale!). Which is totally necessary because I also learned that sundresses are the way to go in the parks. Oh. I've only recently begun to re-embrace non-wedding related dresses after a 15 year hiatus. So yes, sundress. Got it!

But wait! There's more!

One can't wear a cool, short sundress unless one also wears shorts/shimmies/slipshorts/bikershorts under it or there will be chaffing! I've never had such chaffing, but I've never worn sundresses at Disney World before! So Body Glide (but I justify because my old non-athletic flats cause blisters at work so this is totally dual use!!). And did you notice that? Plural. Plural sundresses. Oops. I'm sure they were on sale. Or maybe they're just breeding in my closet. And if I wear said awesome dresses which don't typically come with pockets (curses, designers of women's clothing), I will need a cross body bag. And then, because I would not want to jump too far into embracing non-wedding related dresses, I need new capris. No, too pedestrian. I need hiking pants! I do. I need them (I hiked 2 mountains ... in 2007). They don't stain and they're cool and light weight and also on sale. Oh, and speaking of lightweight I need misters, because we already established that the Frog Togs are too heavy and bulky. Misters will certainly be better.

And then there's the pins I got my kids to trade, the customized autograph books with colored retractable sharpies (my kids' Disney experience would be totally subpar without them!!), trinkets to trade with the Jawas, wrinkle releaser, and various glow stuff to keep the kids happy without having to take out a second mortgage to get them in the park (never mind that I'm needing a second mortgage just to get to the park).

And then today, was the coups de gras. Packing cubes. I had no idea what they were. I am not organized by nature. Nor does that fact bother me under normal circumstances. I get by just fine. But I was thinking these were some collapsible grids of canvas or something (fabric cubbies?). How would that be useful? Only crazy neurotic over scheduled, over planning, over thinking people would get something like that. Right? Right??!! Oh. They're separate suitcases to put in my suitcase so I don't go pawing through looking for socks on day 1 and creating a complete and total mess of wrinkled clothes (but I bought wrinkle releaser!!!!!!)?

Raspberry small/medium classic/slim combo pack.

I hope you've enjoyed this summary of useful things from recent posts. Please understand that if you were the person to suggest any of the things above, I really do appreciate it. I am just mocking myself and my inability to be rational about what I need and don't need. Each individual item, I'm sure, will be very useful. Taken as a whole ... well, I just need to close the Amazon app and step away.

So anyone else need a Disney pre-trip purchasing 12 step group?

Ha ha. I'm the one from the poly thread who also bought packing cubes. I agree, but you quite clearly forgot crafting-related things: personalized Disney shirts, Mickey ears, etc. oh and still useful elsewhere but battery charger for the phone and lots of things that are "moisture wicking."

And lest you think that a few homemade shirts never made anyone poor, my "couple" of shirts got up to 28. I haven't admitted that to anyone outside of disboards. I need a support group for my problem. My mom just caught me putting ds's outfits into gallon ziplocs. She walked away muttering something about disney making me anal.

Please be sure to post pics upon your return in said dresses to enable future park goers. Ha ha.

Disneybounders have me almost convinced I need a few disneybounds a day, one to match each character I visit or where my ADR is. That's more a tumblr/facebook thing than a dis thing but I've seen it on here too! Custom mouse ears on etsy are another huge expense that rack up expenses quickly when you're paying anywhere from $25-50 a pair. I may have also been convinced to try the packing cubes for mine and my sister's trip last year. We didn't really get the use out of them. Or the frog togs. I'm still trying to figure out why I took the advice to bring glow sticks, because me and my sister looked silly being 19 and 18 and pulling out the glow sticks to keep us from buying the light up swords at the park (spoiler: we still bought the swords, while we were wearing the glow bracelets). And the expensive sandals that people recommended to us over and over again last year we ended up wearing for half a day and then ended up wearing regular flip flops the entire time. The lesson I learned after my first trip without my parents last year is : set up a pre-trip budget for all the things you think you may need for your trip and stick to it no matter what things people tell you that you need! It was a lesson my bank account was not happy to teach me.

Any and all Vera Bradley. Duh! I'm selling my right arm to get a pair of Vionics. And I think the people in my small town think I get paid to advertise for Disney because I had to buy a different Mickey/Minnie tshirt for each day I was in the park. Now those are the only tshirts I own...purging was part of Lent :rotfl2:
Still buying scrapbook stuff for my dd's book(from Aug '14 trip) because you KNOW how important it is to scrapbook 300 pictures. And all the other craft supplies because I HAVE to have Disney crafts to do even though I don't have a trip planned for anytime soon. EX: I was bored the other day and just HAD to make Haunted Mansion Mickey ears to wear around the house...JUST BECAUSE. Oh, and the HM ornament too....I need help.

I covet merch that I really don't need. Or actually even want. Not just here but the youtube vids I watch make it worse, particularly the Trackers as they make a point to show the cool merch.
We watch Tim and Jen too! Every time a new video pops up it's like oh look at all the new "stuff" to put on my must have list! lol

Disney provides a unmatched magical and Pixie dust experience. It about marketing, the same as any business. So .......NO Disney is not bankrupting anyone. Individuals choose what they want to buy!

AKK

Thanks for the laugh, you soooo mised the point of this thread

People are taking the piss out of DISBOARDS, all the information people post and how they get convinced they NEED this item or that item for their Disney holiday, ie things that OTHER posters use , and how buying stuff BEFORE their holiday ends up costing alot and how they dont even use said essential items

nothing to do with Disney marketing ,lol

Sorry to "high-jack":o this thread but your comment about Vera Bradley made me think of a quick funny -

I spoke with a Elementary School Teacher the other day (where I work at) who told me that one day, a little girl had lost her purse and was very upset over it.
Later on in the day, a little boy found it and told her, "It's easy to know who this belongs to.

He pointed at the front of it and said, "The owner's name is monogrammed on it...just call Vera Bradley and let her know we have found her purse.":joker::upsidedow & :rotfl:.

Ah.....from outta the mouth of Babes ---popcorn::

Allright - we now return you to your regually scheduled programming......

A throw back to Back to the Future. His name is Calvin Klein. Love it.

So funny! This is a fun thread.

Here's my list of stuff I never would have bought without getting the "ideas" from DIS:

Frog Togs (total waste of money, hardly ever used them)
Vera Bradley bags (don't use them at Disney at all, but love them for home)
Sketcher Go Walks (love!! I have 4 pair now and wear them all the time at home and at Disney)
Packing Cubes (love these as well because I am uber organized, but pretty sure life would not have ended had I never gotten them)
Body Glide (this stuff is awesome for the feet)
Sparkle Skorts (so freaking cute, but oh the money out the door. I do really love them and wear skorts almost exclusively at Disney instead of shorts, but they don't get much use after vacation is over)

I agree, but you quite clearly forgot crafting-related things: personalized Disney shirts, Mickey ears, etc. oh and still useful elsewhere but battery charger for the phone and lots of things that are "moisture wicking."

Oh, yeah. So ... about the chargers, I bought the lipstick battery AND the 5 port charger. :teeth: But I've used the battery already, so clearly it was NEEDED. And yes on the t-shirts. 28 is totally reasonable. ::yes::

Matching T-Shirts, all of the 'moisture wicking' items,

and I really want to look into these packing cubes - :)

Don't look! OMG, RUN AWAY, while you still can! And don't look at the Amazon comments. They will tell you how sad and pitiful you have been, packing for all your vacations 'the old way.' The cubes allow you to be organized by color if you buy more than one set!! The next thing you know they're in your cart!

Um... I bought into DVC, but hay I got resale during the recession so it was a good deal right! :) .... Now Disney is guaranteed to get my $ every 1-3 years! All courtesy of what I learned on the DIS!

Ha ha! You definitely win.

I'll be back when I can answer more fully, @PrincessWithABlaster , but I had to say - PACKING CUBES! Love them - I was a doubter but now I am a believer!

LOL. I guess I will find out.

Disneybounders have me almost convinced I need a few disneybounds a day, one to match each character I visit or where my ADR is.

I don't know what Disneybound is ... And now I'm afraid to look. :teeth:

And I think the people in my small town think I get paid to advertise for Disney because I had to buy a different Mickey/Minnie tshirt for each day I was in the park.

Yes! I can't quite do that (because t-shirts don't look nice over sun dresses and cross body bags) but I have also bought a few Disney t-shirts to wear on character greet days. ::yes::
