How is it possible that Domino's is a profitable company?

I like Dominoes thin crust pizza w/jalapeño on it - but we tried a Red Brick Pizza in Gilroy a few wekes ago - Margherita -- it was some of the best pizza I've tasted.

Don't know about the rest of the country, but here CiCi's is cheaper than getting hamburgers at McDonald's for a family of 4.

Domino's is not cheaper than that but it is cheaper than Pizza Hut and some of the other pizza places that deliver and they are in more remote areas so they will deliver places that Pizza Hut will not.

We don't eat out much any more, but every few weeks on dd's dance night I will get her a small pizza from Cici's. She loves it and for just the one small it is actually couple of dollars cheaper than buying one from Wal-mart.

Edited to add: down here we don't have many pizzeria style places. The couple that we do have are very expensive. We are getting a "Mellow Mushroom" (or maybe it is "yellow mushroom") and a Gatti's--supposed to have a game room or something not sure.

It is Mellow Mushroom. We have one here about an hour away in Destin and it is FABULOUS. SO GOOD. :thumbsup2

Growing up in NY and going to college out of NY (where my best friends were all from Chicago) I came to a conclusion on the chain pizzas.

Chicago and NY have the same basic pizza concept. It's just a matter of thin crust vs. deep dish. Both use "real" sauce, and the right cheese blend. We're also the purists that know a true pizza has no more than 2 toppings.
Now, for everyone else, pizza is not the gourmet delicacy. Basically, the two pizza capitals are surrounded by pizza snobs. We can eat pizza in the other areas, because we appreciate it that they get the art form of what belongs on an actual pizza.

And yes in college, the NYers and the Chicagoans would wait an hour for the places that would deliver decent pizza. It didn't matter that it cost triple what Dominos and Papa John's cost. :rotfl:

thanks, I swear, I could read that sign a hundred times and not remember if its "mellow" or "yellow" :lmao:

I am glad to hear its good, we will have to try it when it opens. DD and DS are pizza fanatics!

That's 2 new pizza places we have going in. And what is really strange to me is the Mellow Mushroom is going in right beside two empty buildings of other restaurants that have gone out of business, I can't help but wonder what makes them think this is the best time for more food establishments:confused3? And why not go into one of the buildings that are already there instead of building a new one?

I used to like Domino's as a kid but when we moved to a new area, my mother ordered pizza for our family from that place. It was so cold! My mother thought it was a fluke and ordered again the next week (she worked nights so Fridays were Pizza nights) but it was cold yet again, despite her complaining the last pizza was cold. Finally, she called Pizza Hut. I like Pizza Hut's a little better because the sauce is zesty. BUT nowadays, I just buy frozen french bread pizzas because I adore those things but sometimes when I have time I make my own pizza.

I am surprised they are still in business. The first and only time I had Domino's was in 1997. It was horrible and I have never had it again. Now whenever we want pizza, it is homemade from scratch. And it is AWESOME!!!

The answer is "cheap pizza". I am willing to bet that Domino's success has a lot to do with being in college towns. I can't stand the stuff now but in college a large cheese pizza could be had for $5, which (if I could keep my roommates out of it) would feed me for three nights.
There were many a week in college when that $5 pizza fed me over the weekend when my meal plan wasn't in effect.

You could say the same thing about taco bell IMO, but yet they are huge. Go figure. :confused3

Well, call me strange, but I like Dominos. In fact I like pretty much any and all pizza.
I like Dominos, I like Pizza Hut, I like Little Ceaser's, I like Papa Johns, I like Cici's, I like Hungry Howies (if they're still around), I like pizzerias, I like town house pizzas, I like Deep dish, I like thin crust, I like Chicago pizza, I like NY pizza, I like Costco pizza. There are very few pizzas that I've ever met that I didn't like. There is one though, here in Mexico that was called TelePizza (or something like that) that I just couldn't stand. They didn't use tomato sauce. If you asked for tomato sauce they gave you packs of ketchup :scared1:

Probably my all-time favorite pizza, though, is Papa Ginos (I think it's more of a local New England chain). Now that's a gooda pizza.

I gotta take exception with this. I love Taco Bell. Even when we don't eat there, when we visit the next town over, we always bring home 10-15 soft shelled tacos (holding the lettuce because lettuce doesn't keep). We just put them in the fridge and if someone gets hungry, they can heat them up whenever they want. I'll grant you that they aren't very big, but there is enough in them to hold you over till dinner.

Even when I make tacos at home, I buy Taco Bell seasoning.

But that's one of the big problems I see with this whole thread. The foundation for a lot of what is being said is whether people like what is offered, but the reality is that other people might disagree, as you've disagreed with SNylund. I suspect that the best indicator of how much something serves the needs and expectations of people is how popular they are, at least that's a far more reliable indicator than any one person's personal preferences. Going back to my example about Flatbread Company for pizza, here: I'm sure there are a lot of people who would agree with me that it is a great product, but I bet there are far more people who would condemn the place just because they couldn't imagine how pizza could actually be worth as much as those of us who love the food there feel the pizza there is worth.

Well I have to say that I like Domino's, Papa John's, Pizza Hut... can't say I've had a pizza yet that I truly thought was bad. We only have two pizza places here in town and both deliver. So we end up having pizza at least once a week....

Does anybody who lives in (or spent any decent amount of time living in) NY City or on Long Island, like Dominos?

I think McDonalds and Wendys have gone way down hill as well, from their quality levels from the 1970s-1980s IMO. Even though I will still eat at all of these places due to lack of choices in my area. Wendys used to be really like home made grilled burgers, as they advertise. Their outlets also used to look "old fashioned" they had cool tables with stuff from the 1920s all over them, with the furnishings and stuff in the restaurant old fasioned looking. Now they have re-done everything to make it look like a gas station truck stop. :confused3 Have NO idea why they would do that, not to mention their burgers used to be thick, now they are as thin as a cheese slice.

I haven't eaten a pizza from Domino's in about five years a lot of them here in New Mexico have closed down. I do like Papa John's and Pizza Hut.

Just because something is part of a chain, doesn't mean they are each created equally. We have a Domino's here that is really good. We first ordered it when we were moving in and we were like, wow, this is really good for a Domino's! But I know which of the other Domino's aren't as good. Just like I don't like the Little Ceasar's closest to us, it's way too greasy. But I've had other Little Ceasar's and it's really good. I think it depends on the owner/management of each individual establishment. I personally have never liked Pizza Hut. I'm a Godfather's fan, but it started here and it's not as big as Domino's, Pizza Hut, etc.

We have hundreds of good- real- pizza type places around here that there is no need to eat the garbage stuff like Dominos- they are around but mainly in the lower income places.
