With summer movies coming out soon, and capacity restrictions, how is DCL currently handling PremEAR's at sea? Normally the theaters are packed with people, but with that not being a current option, I am wondering how they are handling the demand for people wanting to see a Midnight (or midnight-ish) release? Anyone with any recent experience?

From recent reports, the physical distancing in the theater is no longer happening. Masks are required in the theater though.

Thanks, that makes sense. I was just curious because it's the one time there isn't a secondary option (like watching the theater show on your stateroom tv). I realize you can possibly watch the movie at a showing later in your cruise, but the PremEAR experience is only that first showing and I wondered if DCL was back to stuffing them all in. I remember one PremEAR where people were sitting on the steps of the theater because there were no seats left. It was crazy but fun.

We saw the PremEar of avengers endgame at the 11pm before land showing and it was amazing. They had the crew dressed as shield agents and smoke and laser lights going all over the theater while everyone was getting seated. The shield agents were interacting with the crowd interrogating them. Everyone was clapping and crying at the end. They then showed it onboard in the theater for the next few days both in the Walt Disney and the regular movie theater. My husband is a huge marvel fan and lifelong comic book reader and it was one of his most favorite experiences watching it in a theater full of marvel fans.

Honestly? Most land theaters are showing first showings at 6pm the day before "release" date - so say when Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness officially releases May 6, based on their typical release schedule DCL should show it at 11pm May 5...but land theaters will be showing it starting at 6pm May 5. You're not seeing it first on DCL unless they're showing it at 11pm May 4.

They called Turning Red a premear on our cruise -- and it was in the walt disney theater instead of a show one night -- but there wasn't anything special beyond that. Plus, the movie had been available on Disney+ for long enough that my kid had already watched it 3x by then (downloaded for our plane).

There was no spacing in the walt disney -- the buena vista still had alternate rows blocked off.

We are wondering this for Dr Strange since we will be on the fantasy when it comes out. On land movies are least where we are come out the day before around 3pm. So it will be interesting to see when it will start being shown on the ship.

It will be shown usually late the night before. Don’t be surprised if it doesn’t show up right away in the navigator when you board, they like to keep it a surprise and announce it by the cruise director at a theater show.

Yup. I found out why they do that one cruise. It's because they are not 100% sure they will receive the digital file in time to show it. It's only sent to them a day or two before the movie premieres and if there is any issue receiving it or with the file they don't want to disappoint people.

Since Dr. Strange is officially opening on May 6, assuming they have the film I would expect it to premier onboard at 11pm on May 5. As you've said, they usually show the day before (6pm in NYC - so like 6pm on May 5), so yes. People on land will have the first chance before the ship.

On one cruise they showed our movie PreMEAR at 11:00pm in the time zone we were in, which was 8 hours ahead of the USA time zone, so we saw it "ahead." The fun was more just being at a premier with people who also enjoy the movie and are excited. The fun is the experience for most people I think, not actually being "first."
