How important is UY for a second contract?

We currently have a 150 point contract at SSR with an October UY. What are the disadvantages of purchasing another contract with a different UY? I know you will have two different DVC memberships but is it that big of a deal or is it a pain and worth waiting until we find a deal with the same UY?

You would not be able to use the points together from each membership unless you were to call Member Services to transfer points. Once transferred, the points are not visible online and you will have to call MS every time you want to use them.

Two UYs means two banking deadlines.

FWIW, I have multiple UYs. If I were to do it over again, I would have waited for the right resale contract with the same UY. While I have only orphaned points once, it takes a lot of planning to make sure that it doesn’t happen more often.

Two UY really only works if you never ever intend to use the contracts together. If you were to buy VGC, for instance, the assumption I would have is that would be an exclusive-use contract. You'd never use them anywhere but VGC, and we know your SSR points are rubbish at VGC becaue not much is available at 7 months. So having two UY is fine, because the VGC would always be handled as its own unit.

I have two different UYs. I'm looking at booking one of my home resorts for May 2021 in June. I want to book four nights, but only have enough home resort points to book three nights at 11 months out. When I hit seven months out, I will have just enough points to book that fourth night by transferring from one contract to the other (both would be non-home points). But I won't be able to just book one night one line because of the transferred points. I'll have to call MS to book that last night because of the transferred points. May isn't too hard to book. But if I was trying to book that one night to add to my reservation at seven months out for Oct or Nov or Dec, the one hour wait to call MS might just leave me with no nights left to book instead of booking it online one hour earlier.

We have 12 year old boy/girl twins and enjoy that SSR is right around the corner from Disney Springs. They are huge foodies and very much enjoy all the offerings at the Springs. VGF have never interested us....too stuffy. If we want to stay around MK then Poly is more our style. I guess I will patiently wait for that perfect resale.

If you are going to use your contracts together, you won't be sorry you waited for the use year that matches your contract. The first time you run into a hassle with booking or re-using transferred points and have to call MS, you'll forget all about any time or $$ "savings" you got by buying a different use year. Good luck!

Will your new contract be SSR?
There are minor headaches, such as 2 different banking deadlines.

The biggest issue is if you want to combine points.

If buying SSR, I would probably try to match UY.

If buying another home resort, then the combining issue only comes in at 7 months.

I have multiple home resorts and multiple UYs, but i do not combine my points. If i were adding on to a resort at which I already own points, I would try to match UY. If I were buying a new home resort, I wouldn't care if I got an additional UY, so long as it was a good UY for my intentions.

........(snip).........If buying another home resort, then the combining issue only comes in at 7 months......

But combining at 7 months can be a very BIG deal if you want a studio or don't travel in the summer months.

This ... I have Feb and Aug UY that are to be used for different purposes. At most, we use them separately for split stays.

I have used the 150 point contract to initially book the date. I then called MS to have them transfer, bank, and apply the points to set up my full length of reservation.

Took maybe 10-15 mins while I was working on email. I would prefer it to be on the same contract but getting fully loaded contracts was more important. I have an excel tracker for my contracts anyways so seeing the points online doesn't really matter to me.

Yes, I still want SSR. The whole reason we are getting more points is because we have decided we need to be a 1bedroom family so I would be combining these points. We usually visit during Spring Break so we need 250-300 points to make that happen. If we decide to try out another resort, then we will see what is available. For the most part, we like SSR. (although we do love trying new resorts....who doesn't!) I love being so close to the Springs and we are always trying out new restaurants at different resorts. With being at SSR, we can just walk to the buses at Disney Springs and jump on a direct bus to that resort. We are very active people so walking is not a big deal, I actually love it because we can justify our eating with the extra walking! I also love SSR because of the morning runs!

It seems for our purposes it is best to wait for the same UY/resort. We just bought/just paying off our current contract so my husband will probably be happier if it takes a bit of time to find one. I'm guessing as long as one pops up by the end of this summer, we should be good for our next trip in March 2021. Worst case scenario.....he has to share a studio with our 12 yr/old twins but in the end we are at Disney so he won't complain too much!

You would have to transfer points continuously oitherwise.

You want the same UY, and they have to be titled the same way.

2+ UY's is only good when its for all intents and purposes 2+ completely different stays

I would get same use year since wanting SSR. This will be good value and excellent sleep around points since want 1BR, which have a lot of availability at 7 months around all DVC resorts.

Same UY makes things much easier if you want to combine points for a 7 month reservation. For resort priority reservation no much difference. Just easier to remember one user ID and password for all you DVCs....
