How formal are formal nights?

I don't mean for the kids but for grown ups? We are sailing in Feb on the 7day western cruise with our 3 boys and there will be so much luggage....Do I need to pack the nice evening gowns like I wore on other cruises???
PS How many formal nights on the 7 day cruise?

One formal night, one semi-formal night on the 7 day.

You will see an assortment of things on both nights. Formal night..yes, I took my black floor length dress, hubby tux. Many, many people are dressed up. Some ladies in regular dresses, pant suits, some in the classic little black dress. Men, suits and tuxes.

Semi-formal night..a lot of nice dresses pant suits for the ladies, suits for the men.

Go with what you feel comfy with. We loved dressing up and the pics turned out great.

On the 7 nighters there is one formal and one semi formal night. You will see the entire range of the fancy formal/tux all the way down to tee shirts and shorts. I fall into the lower middle - I wear a dress shirt, tie and slacks. DW wears a black pants suit.

Here is a pic of our family on formal night and the other is just me on another one of our DCL cruises on formal night.....as the others have said you will see a wide range. My two DD's love wearing then prom/homecoming dresses again....
