How far out to plan?

We are new DVC members (in fact my DH, "DisneyJam", is trying to rent this year's points at the trade board since we just returned from our WDW trip and will not be able to use them this year). And his thread is what has led me to my question:

How difficult is it to book a vacation in less than 11 or 7 months? Do the resorts typically sell out? The reason I am asking is because people are posting (and pm-ing) for weeks in July (this month, this year!!!!) or through this summer and early fall. I had gotten the impression that (especially for certain resorts) it was quite difficult to get in. We are at SSR but the ones I am seeing mentioned more often are OKW or BCV or BWV.

Booking within 60 days is difficult because unused points can be transfered directly to CRO at that time. September should be doable, but October will be difficult at all DVC resorts.
