How Far Out Do You Plan?

Our trip is Dec 1-7 which seems like forever away. But I feel like there is so much to plan and I have not the slightest clue where to even start. I cant decide whether or not we should do the dining plan, what character meals to do, when to go to the parks. The only thing I do know is that we are doing MVMCP on Thursday night Dec 3rd. Very excited for that!

We are going the second week of June 2010 and I already have a detailed itinerary with restaurants and extras planned. The good thing is I have month to tweak it, the bad thing is I can only do do much until it's actually time to book. I started planning the next trip before we even left WDW last February. Planning is half the fun.

We're going in December as well and I feel like I'm in the same boat you are in. I feel like I can't plan until we get park hours and then I will only get those a couple of days before I have to make ADRs. I just randomly picked our night for MVMCP and hope it works OK. I wish we had more days there (we'll be there 6 nights with a 5 day park hopper). I'm also at the disadvantage that I haven't been there in over ten years. Last time I was there we just made our dinner reservations at the park in the morning for places like Coral Reef and The Brown Derby. Those days are over.

Yeah when September 1st hits, its gonna be even more hectic! Gotta decide which parks to do and whether or not we are gonna do the dining plan (still cant decide if it is worth it) and then try and make adr's

I start planning and booking my ressie as soon as I can get DH onboard! I just booked today for November 1-8 at CBR...never stayed at a moderate before, but I think it will be fun! We are planing another one for next year, so I had to compromise! :cool1: I start the planning for DDP ressies next...I have actually started looking at that already, have to wait 90 days out to book dining...so I will be ready for August 3rd! We are so excited to go back to WDW!...Usually, I am planning at least a half a year out!

How far out? TOO far out in many peoples eyes I think, even my DM thinks I am beyond nuts.

We have to book roughly a year ahead of time because we book free dining bounceback and when we're on the current vacation. I have this next vacation in September planned down to a tee. In January, I had a spreadsheet going with projected park hours and a mock ADR list. Sure, it changed over the months but it was definitely going.

Now we have a Jan 2010 trip in the books that I am beginning to plan like crazy on also. Although... it's only a 5 or 6 night trip so I am not too worried about it. Basically there are 2 things on the list as of now for January. 1- Eat at Biergarten and Kouzzina, 2- Visit all four parks on Sunday the 17th.

I am also thinking about the Sept 2010 trip, and it's uncertain on whether we're going in the beginning in Sept or in the beginning/middle of October.

I just love WDW, I really should live there :)

Honestly, you are speaking to the overplanners club. The folks who post here are largely big time planners.

I've done bounceback offers for free dining- so I guess that makes me soemoen who planned a year in advance- but really I just picked a resort and sat on that choice for nearly six months. (BAck then, dinign reservations started at 180 days)

I've also done a few last minute trips. I refuse to pay top dollar for airfare, so I booked about a month in advance.

You don't HAVE to pick much of anything in advance. I like to pick a resort, get cheap airfare, a deal on my rental car(If I'll have one). Beyond that, I like to pick a park for each day, and no more than one dining reservation per day - usually not quite one per day - unless I'm on the DDP. BUt equally, you can eat all quick service dining - and pick all your dining onthe fly.

The new DIsney dining reservation system is kind of cool because you can actually see the current menus for most TS places now. The downside is that I bet they are now semi-locked in 90 days out, and the competition for dining choices is much higher at 90 days than it was at 180 days.

I more or less pick my park by either going to the EMH parks or avoiding them. If you are avoiding them, then you can pick almost any park each day. You may want to go to HS ona Fantasmic day, or you may want to avoid that as well for lower crowds all day. If you can call up the park hours for the days you'll be there, that may well help. Otherwise, you really can't go wrong. If you happen to pick MK on a day it closes early - then that gives you an evening break, and you'll get lower crowds. If you go on a more extended hour day, crowds will be higher, but you'll get more time. It pretty much evens out.

This past March, I put together a great trip about 45 days in advance. We changed some of the dining while we were there even! Everyone said it was one of our best trips ever! Mostly because I used strategy, not strict planning per say. When my family wanted different dining, I knew what the area options would be, and I knew how to get new ones; at the resort concierge desk, as it happens. Making it happen was easy, and I didn't get flustered or resentful that they wanted to make a change!

In my opinion, anything more agressive than what I ascribed is TOO much. There's no point in making a strict plan of your dining a year in advance. The only thing to do more than a year out is dream and save your money, unless maybe you are planning a big wedding or something equally major..

So relax. You won't see EVERYTHING on any trip, no matter how much you plan. I've also been enough times to know that something unexpected happens nearly every visit: an injury, and illness, a problem back home. Stuff happens and you can't let it ruin your trip. I worry about some of the folks who try to plan every detail a year in advance before hours are even posted. I worry about those who have the fatasmic package, the boutique for their daughter, two TS meals per day, and a specific ride order with specific times - are these the folks I've seen yelling at their kids who want to go on Peter Pan instead of the planned Dumbo? Are these the folks who post after their trip how a certain restaurant didn't live up to the hype?

there is some advantage though if you know what dining you want at the 90 day mark. Otherwise, just browse and pick from what's available. Sometimes the most fun places are the ones we didn't expect to like. One place we first tried last year my whole family loved! I had intentionally avoided it for over ten years!

This is what I did. I booked in Feb for our trip that begins Saturday! I hadn't been in 12 years, only dined in a couple of TS places, we were young and broke and on our honeymoon. In fact, when going through our memories, DH and I both remembered trying to save money, fussing about prices at CS places, a few rides and memories, lots about the Wilderness Lodge, and CROWDS.....

So, we decided on DxDP this time, our girls our 2 and 9, it will never be this 'cheap" for us again. We wanted it all paid for in advance, not as much to "save money" by doing a DDP, but to make sure we don't stress over the money while we are there. Magical Trip insurance I called it!

I researched first the character meals, since it is our girls' first trip, I wanted to be sure to hit the high spots. Then poured over dining reviews for other restaurants I wanted to hit. Then I bought the Unofficial Guide to find out the best parks to visit on each day, and plugged in the chosen TS's in most appropriate places. Had it all ready, calendar came out, everything coincided perfectly with what I had planned. Got all my ADR's within a 10 minute time of requested.

ASked lots of questions here, and read lots of posts. Made tip sheets, touring plans, itinerary for each day.

Fast forward to 2 weeks before our trip. Find out that a space shuttle launch is planned for our arrival night, during our dinner. DH really loves all things NASA, so I had to totally rearrange 4 dinners to get us in somewhere that we could be done in time to glimpse the shuttle. Instead of Ohana on arrival night, we're doing Chef Mickey. Works better anyway, kids will get to meet THE Mouse pretty soon after arrival. Online ADR's rock, because you can see what else is out there and play around with your stuff pretty easily!

Read the reviews and menus and get an idea of places you want to eat, decide what is important to you, and go with it~

HAPPY PLANNING!

Overplanner- who me? We haven't gone on our free dining trip October 1st and I am already looking at early march- staying at CBR!! But who plans????

Happy to say, I already started planning our trip for Sept 2010. :lmao: We only get to go to WDW every 2-3 years so as soon as we decide on a date, I start planning. For our past trip in Dec 2008 I started planning 18 months out and this way we made payment every month on the trip and everything was paid before we left.

This is like having a vacation on layaway!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: My neighbor asked me how I can afford to go to disney so much? Well cause I make payments on until 45 days before I go.

I tend to think 14 months out is best, 12 months out is adequate, 10 months out has me Dissing in panic mode.

This isn't a problem is it?

When we became DVC members last September we knew we were going on our next trip in July 2010! We know the exact dates now (July 13-23, 2010), I already looked at the EMH morning hours for this July, because usually (from what people have told me), EMH hours stay the same one year to the next, same days of the week. So I made a sample park itinerary with restaurants we want to eat at. We bought our tickets today to lock in the price at Undercover Tourist (plus the Mouse Savers newsletter discount) since Disney will more than likely increase their prices at the beginning of August and then so will UT. We bought a 7-day base ticket for all of us, going to MK and DHS for 2 days and to Epcot for 3 days (one of the Epcot days is exclusively to relax in the WS and enjoy the food, shopping and entertainment there without having a commando park day). One EMH morning at each park. No evening EMH since our kids will only be 3 and 5 when we go. A couple of off days when we hang out at Boardwalk Villas, go to the pool, enjoy activities at the Boardwalk, and go to DTD for some shopping and to walk around.

So, as you can see, our trip is still 369 days away but we are pretty sure on how things will pan out!

Honestly I start planning while i am still in the park...planning my next trip that is! I big time over plan. Actually i love reading Disney travel guides and surfing this site. It builds up the excitement. I am already thinking ahead to fall 2010 and we still have our trip in Dec 2009 to do.

ha yeah i have 4 guides and the mousejunkies book. I look at them everyday and surf this board, it does build the excitement. December seems so long away!

We don't depart for WDW till late Nov. That just seems TOOOOOOO far away. This will be our 2nd trip to WDW. When we did this last year, we started planning about 6-8 months ahead. This time, we made our booking with Dreams Unlimited 11 months prior! We're hoping for a discount code though. Will definitely make things a lot nicer! More to spend at Disney! But I do agree that the bulk of the planning comes AFTER park hours are released. Then ADRs have to be made, etc. Again, we'll be doing MVMCP and now I'm debating whether or not to have Disney mail the tickets off to us (we reside overseas) or to pick them up at Will Call. We did Will Call last year and received paper tickets. We're leaning towards the plastic ones this year. So much to plan for and look forward to! I cannot stand it!!! And yet, I love it so!!! How is this possible??:confused3

Oh... And I forgot to add that we're using the Unofficial Guide 2009. Worked for us in 2008 as well. Will have to tweak the plans to exclude certain rides and attractions, but all in all, we think it's a great guide!! We also bought 2 Disney Trivia books from Amazon to keep us from getting Disney withdrawals. We got it bad...

I have also done this= start planning while I am there on my current trip. After our visit I told my husband "Oh we will definitely be coming back."

My dh and I just decided that we would be going in Feburary 2010 with my nephew and his family. I thought I had plenty of time to make plans, but after reading this board.........I feel like I'm way behind! LOL
