Hey gang! I am starting to look for a part-time job to help pay for a much needed new car. DH would prefer that I work in the evenings and weekends but that doesn't work well for us since he does travel for business and well doesn't hit door exactly at 5:00. In other words I have to call him at 5:10 and say. "Tell me your on the road because I have to work tonight" Which generally get the response of "Ugh I'm shutting down my computer now" So I was looking at the ads this morning and there is an opening for a job but it is at least 25 minutes away. Not far I realize but is it too far if say I have to pick up a sick kid??? DH works 30 minutes away and lets face it his job is the priority since it pays the mortgage. So the question is how far is your commute for a part time job and do you think it is worth it???

I live in Maryland (about 50 miles from DC and Baltimore). The average person commutes somewhere on the beltway and their average commute is 60 - 90 minutes 1 way. I am the exception. I work 3.5 miles from my house and it takes me 10 minutes to get to work. 25 minutes is nothing in this area.

We're 8 miles out of NYC, and DH's commute in used to be an hour. He got a job in a branch office, and most of the time, works 1/2 hour from home (he's thrilled). A couple of days a week, he commutes an hour each way. A 1/2 hour commute here is considered around the block!

My commute now is approximately 33 minutes. However, during the summer, when I was in college, I traveled about 40 minutes by car (or 50 minutes if I took the train) to get to my job. I lived in a fairly remote area and had to go far if I wanted to work.

It depends on what way I feel like taking.

I can go through the city, and it's shorter, but I hit lights. It takes me 20 minutes.

If I take the freeway, it's longer, but I can go 80, and it takes me 30 minutes.

I usually take it slow on the way there, and take the freeway home! :cool1:

My part time job (3hours per day/ 15 hours per week) is 4 miles from my house -DH drives 1 hour each way to commute to work

IMHO, if you need additional money then to me 25 minutes is "worth" it to commute to supplement family income

My commute is 10 miles each way.

DH's commute is 18 miles each way but his office is moving this Fall to a building not too far from me. :) We'll be able to meet for lunch.

Exit left from my bedroom, go down the stairs, turn right, go through the living room and left into my office. Sometimes I'll detour through the kitchen for coffee first... :duck:

I live a mile from work. My commute is 15-30 minutes, depending on which transportation I pick. If I need to pick up a sick kid from school, it will take me at least 30 minutes, even if I use the car.

I have the luxury of living less than a 5 minute walk from work. Makes life very easy.

If you are working part time and traveling 25 miles each way your entire paycheck will go to your new car payment and gas for your commute-kind of defeats the purpose I think.

I live 10 blocks from where I work. In the summer it takes 5-10 minutes to get there (depending on tourist traffic) and the rest of the year it takes about 4 minutes.

31 miles each way. 1.5 hours a day.

Kind of a pain in the butt, but well worth it given the money

I've had TWO HOUR commutes :scared1:, Atlanta is very spread out so I've learned my lesson.

My current commute is 5 minutes, 10 if I drop my son off. It's WAY more expensive to live like this but I prefer it to a long commute.

For a part time job, I wouldn't go further than 20 minutes. PT evenings and weekends are likely going to get you retail or food service. Unless you live in the boondocks, you should be able to have some choices within 20 minutes of you.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Long commutes are very normal around here. My DH worked for a company that was 30 miles away for over 20 years. He's now looking for a new job and is hoping for a shorter commute this time.

The school where I work is 1.5 miles from our house. It takes me 5-7 minutes, depending on whether or not I make the light!:)
