Do you drive 2 miles to work or 20? More? I found the most wonderful house and it's only a few more miles out than the one we currently live in. But, the company my hubby works for says he couldn't drive his company vehicle (work van) home if we lived out in that city. So, hubby says probably not going to happen LOL

But it got me thinking, how far does everyone commute daily? And do you do it for the love of a great house or just because there are not options closer?

We live about 4 minutes/2 miles from DH's work. It is AWESOME.

But, we have outgrown our small house and are moving about 30 minutes away to a bigger house.

We really just can't afford to go bigger in this area.

My commute is 5-10 minutes depending on if I get stuck in the school traffic. DH's commute is about 5 minutes. We bought this house because of the location to both our jobs.

I drive about 40 miles each way...I work in the county south of where I live..My DH also works in that county, but because he is a FF on shift, he only does it 3 days a week

You do seem to have to move out further to get bigger or better. I live 20 miles from work, it used to be five miles. We got a better house by moving out. Is there any way your Dh could work something out?

The reason why I commute is that my employer lets me work whenever I can and that allows me to keep my kids out of daycare. I think they probably pay more there- it is on the other side of the state line in a more affluent area (though that is changing) I work in Overland Park Kansas, and our town here in Missouri is called "little Overland Park" lately with all the amenities popping up.

Down one flight of stairs. I am self-employed and work from home.

Down the stairs and into my office! It's great!!!

There would have to be some serious money on the table for me to consider commuting any distance again.

DH commutes a little less than 3 miles, DS's school is 5 miles. (His elementary school was a little over a mile.)

Prior to this, DH commuted 50 miles each way, 1 hour door to door.

About 30 miles or so. That equates to anywhere from 40 minutes to two hours.

I live 14 miles from my office. Unfortunately, with Atlanta traffic, it’s about a 35 minute commute to work and a 55 minute commute home. To afford a house, we’d have to live so far from my job that I’d likely have a 1.5 hour commute each way—no thanks! :teeth:

Driving directions tell me I live 0.8 miles from work. I walk (about 20 minutes) or talk a bus (about 12 minutes - with the wait).

A mile each way for me but I ride my bike to work so it takes me 10 minutes.

DH commutes 60 miles each way (takes about 1 1/2 hours - 2 hours during rush hour). I drive 20 miles each way to school, about 3 times a week.

We live in this town because my family all lives here. With all the problems we have with our DS, we don't want to be without a support system. I'd love to move away, though.

Thanks for all the replies :) Helps me see that not everyone lives next door to their work :) We currently live about 20 minutes from where he works, actually where his office is but he works all over a 200 mile radius (service tech).

We would be crossing in to the next state, his office is also located in this state. So they would no longer have to take out our GA state taxes....saving us that amount each year. Maybe we could afford him a small truck to drive back and forth....but then again we really take for granted that he drives his work van home now, and the company pays for gas, maintaining the vehicle....etc. So we of course would have to take on that with the new vehicle purchase, making the cost a bit more than truck and gas :(

Oh well, something will work out :)

I go 27 miles each way, dh goes more like 37. We used to be about 18 miles closer, but could not afford a bigger house in that area, so we had to move further out. Some days it's not so bad, days like Monday, when we had a snowstorm, it took poor dh 2 hours and 20 minutes. I worked from home that day.

I commute about 30 miles each way. But since it's against the flow of traffic, it only takes me 30-35 minutes to get to and from work most days. My previous job, when I worked downtown, I was around 20 miles commute, but it could take me anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour (or more) each way and was really inconsistant.

That being said, we moved where we did because we loved the area and the neighborhood, even knowing that the commute would be a bit worse. :)

i work from home so i have no commute. which in a few years i will be...and to make any type of $$ will have to commute alteast 35 minutes each way! :guilty:

I don't work, but DH's commute, according to Mapquest is 16 1/2 miles.
He works in the city though and it takes about 50 minutes. He walks 10 minutes from home to the bus, the ride is about 30 minutes and then he walks 10 minutes from the Port Authority terminal to his office.

Prior to this his commute was 7 minutes, I miss that!

I work in Manhattan and live in Central Jersey. Usually about 2 hours door to door. But I have down time, get to the train station, wait, change trains in Newark, wait, get off in Manhattan, wait for bus, ........
If I treat myself and drive, I can do it in about 75 minutes depending on traffic. To buy something closer to the city is very expensive. Taxes in NJ, CT, etc are obscene!!
