How Far Do You Drive?

It's approx. 1200 miles for us, or about 24 hours. We usually stop around Nashville on day one.
We used to drive all the time, but then for awhile it was less to fly down and back. I really want to drive again because then I can buy whatever I want and I wont have to worry about fitting in the overhead or getting it past security.

About 925 miles from Morgantown, WV to Disney World. It is a 14 hour drive, which we take 2 days to cover on the way down. Coming home, we usually make the entire 14 hour drive in one shot.

we are 1463 miles away from our second home and will be attempting for the first time next year to do it with our 4 yo girls. This should be interesting as we have no intention to stop other then eat and potty break.

These two sum up the whole argument/discussion. Both do it the way they want, not the one that's cheaper. Many of us do the cheaper thing out of need, but when it comes down to it, we do, and should do, what we want. In a perfect world(retirement), I'll drive down over a couple of days and spend 2 weeks, then drive slowly back. But til then, I will do what I can, and for right now, I'll fly.
BTW snocrossmechanic, you folks at the Fort are just a whole other kind, and maybe someday I'll try it that way. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Its one of my rewards for being self employed. We have been blessed with the ability to travel for extended periods of time. The only downside is that I am still working even when we are vacationing. Another "perk" of the self employed..lol

As for the Fort, I have to say I am hooked. It has cost me 3 different campers / RV's in the last 5 years !!! We started small and kept up-sizing. I think we have reached our peak because I am not handing over $500,000 or more for one of the ultra fancy buses. We do love it there so much and the kids enjoy the freedom to wander around the site and the activities at the Fort. They have so much going on some people come stay at the campground and never visit a park.

Next year our oldest starts Kindergarten and the days of taking off anytime will be heavily restricted. Summers will be an option. We may change up the longer trip and head to Alaska in the summer. WDW may become a Christmas event in the future (shhhhh....I have Xmas 2011 booked but i'm not telling anyone here at home yet).

Best Wishes and Merry Christmas to you and your families.

We drive about 11hrs. First two times drove at night. The kids and I sleep 80% of the trip. This time dh decide we are leaving in the wee hrs.

We drive from Chicago at least 3 to 4 times a year (one year we arrived home and 19 days later left again to drive back down) and we combine our Disney trip with visiting family in FL. We do take 2 days to drive each way. We drive about 12 hours the first day and 5-6 hours the second.
We used to fly to Florida but the cost of air and car rentals - plus the hassle at the airport and limits on luggage make driving a much more reasonable alternative. Plus we have a convertible and it is really nice to be able to use it a little more often than late spring, summer and early fall.

From Baton Rouge to WDW is right at 700 miles. We usually make it from 10.5 to 11 hours.

I'm going to move this to our transportation board.

I've always wondered, though, isn't it a huge BUMMER to have to make a giant drive (more than 4 or 5 hours) BACK from the world? i know it is bad enough just to be leaving (the ME ride back to the airport is the saddest little ride in the world), but at least i know i'll be home in a few hours, ready to go back to work the next day. i can't imagine having to leave the magic and then face a giant drive.

Yes it is a HUGE bummer to have to make that drive, but the next entire week is tough too. We usually pad our return to work/school by a day to have a chance to at least come down a bit more gently. Tho, coming back to reality for us is hard no matter how we do it. The longer we stay, the worse it seems. We have been spending our last morning in the MK or at a Character Breakfast to soak in the last bit of Magic before embarking on the 8hr drive home. That usually puts us home late (10pm). It seems a lot longer on the way home.

A number of you good folks should join the ranks of the "For 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers Only!" thread. :drive:

All the best. :thumbsup2

We have driven 3 times from Prince Edward Island (1935 miles). We love the drive, our kids love the drive as well. Our vacation starts when we leave our driveway. Wouldn't do it any other way.

I recently drove approx 1300 miles to our Florida house which is about 23 miles south of Epcot. Took me 3 days (2 nights) as I was alone and kept my driving to about 9 hours or less per day. (it was 9.5 hours the first day, 8 hours the second and 5 hours the third) I stopped in Richmond and Savannah for my nights.

We are driving for the first time in January... it is about 800 miles for us, so it will be an adventure! We just hope the weather will cooperate with us.

We are 1,025 miles each way, around 16-17 hours. Usually do it in two days - 12 hours the first day gets us to Southern SC (Walterboro area), then another 5 hours on day two. We arrive at check-in time relaxed, refreshed and ready to go!

We love driving and do it at least twice a year. In June, we are trying a straight-through drive, but only because we have two drivers. Never could do it with one.

I concur with BC - some of you folks belong over with us on the "For 2,000+ Mile Drivers" Thread. It's THE place on the DIS to talk driving and we are the friendliest bunch on the DIS :rotfl:

Happy Holidays :santa:

900 miles each way for us, but it used to be 1200. It's not a big deal to us as we used to live in Florida too (so that was about 70 miles!) and we were frequently traveling Florida to WNY for a few years - it just became kind of routine.
