I just dusted off my sewing machine and I'd love to start quilting! I know the basics of sewing for the most part- I've made about a million pillows (what can I say? I was proud! :lmao:), and have done aprons and other things.. but I absolutely love quilts, and would love to start making them! I have a Singer sewing machine, and it's a pretty nice one, or so I've been told.. so I assume I have the right equipment to do it?

But how do you quilt? I've done a google search and it had me even more confused than before! Can anyone explain the steps, or maybe lead me to a how-to blog or something?

Thanks!

Welcome to the world of quilting! I love it because I am making an item that can last forever!

I started with a standard quilt and have also made several tee shirt quilts and photo quilts.

Yes, the sites on-line are very confusing -- too much info and too many techniques. I would suggest going to your library and checking out a "How to Quilt" book. Most will take you step by step through the design. After you make one "by the rules" then you will be able to adjust and make what you want to make.

It really comes down to measuring -- everything at the beginning is squares and triangles and you want all the points to match up. Invest in a nice clear grid ruler square (sold at JoAnns, etc) and a rotary cutter. And use your coupons for fabric!!!! Don't pay full price for anything!

Thanks so much! I'll head over to the library and get started!

Also check out local community colleges. They sometimes have non-credit courses and might offer quilting. Joann stores offer classes--check with them for their schedules. I am on the other side of the country but we have quite a few quilting stores in our area and they all offer where customers can come in and someone will show them how to get started and learn new techniques.

Good Luck!

For your first quilt, you might want to try Oh, Fransson! New Wave Quilt. It has great instructions and not that much to piece together.
