How exactly does charging on your room key work?

I gave them $500 in Travelers Checks apon arrival. On the very last day I was purchasing something in a gift shop @ AK when I was told there was no more money on my card. She called my resort and handed me the phone. I was over my limit. I think it was like $8.00 so I paid cash for the item and when I checked out I paid the $8.00 at the front desk.

We will be going again in April and will use the card again.

However I do have one question about the card. There are several adults traveling with me and all of the rooms are in my name. So can they put there own money on there room key not to get confused with my room key?
