How Early is Too Early...

...to put up Christmas lights/decorations? There is a house a block away from us that already has their front yard decorated with lights and illuminated candy canes. I think they started putting the lights up right after Halloween but I just noticed the candy canes yesterday.

I know that alot of retail stores are trying to stretch out the Christmas shopping season (Target made the switch from Halloween to Christmas on November 1st!), but how early is too early for regular folks like us to start decorating?

We are putting our tree up next weekend (11/18) only because we leave the following week for WDW. We have done Thanksgiving Disney trips before and when you get home, you don't feel like putting stuff up. So....we are doing it before this time.

Depending on the weather, DH may put our outside lights up soon-it's no fun to climb on a roof or a ladder in the snow! But, we won't turn them on until after Thanksgiving.

Call me old fashioned, but I like to wait AFTER Thanksgiving to celebrate Christmas.

I think people should wait till the day after Thanksgiving. We are going to be in WDW for Christmas this year so we won't be decorating. It's going to be very strange!

People around here put up the Christmas stuff BEFORE Halloween!

I would rather hang lights in mid Novmeber when it is 75 like today than take a chance that it will be 40 and sleeting when I have time to decorate 2 weeks from now.

It seems even the real people (not retailers) are pushing the holiday this year.

In our house we celebrate Thanksgiving before jumping into the Christmas frenzy.

we sometimes take advantage of good weather and get the lights up before Thanksgiving - but don't turn them on until after.

I am putting my tree up next weekend. I have that saturday off. If I dont I would probably not have a tree at all like the last couple of year.

We still have to get our halloween stuff down! With the flooding and non-stop rain we haven't had a chance yet! After Thanksgiving we will get the xmas stuff up!

3 people already around my area have their lights & yard decorations up. My house will get loaded with all the christmas boxes and stuff on 11/18. I will decorate the whole week of thanksgiving. It really takes me the whole week to get it done. It takes one day to just set out all my christmas beanies I have collected over the years. Then another full day to set out my HUGE houses collection. Another day to put up & light the tree & ornaments put on said tree. One day off for thanksgiving and the one day to set up what goes on anything that doesn't move LOL It takes a whole week to get it all done here.

Our neighbor just put out his lights last night up on his 2nd story roof and above his porch because it was in the 60's and here in Michigan you put them up when its warm. Otherwise, you're stuck putting them out when it's 30 or even below that. Brrrr. However, he does not light them up until the night after Thanksgiving. We only put lights on our bushes and front entry, so we don't have to do that this early. I wouldn't be shocked if neighbors started putting the lights on earlier and earlier, because that's what seems to be happening, as long as it doesn't make my electric bill go up...I don't care.

Completely understandable. I really wouldn't want to go through all that after a vacation either. It's nice to come home and enjoy the decorations already up. When you get back from WDW you'll have forgotten that your house looks lovely and just let out a big sigh.

Have a great trip over Thanksgiving!

I like to decorate over the long Thanksgiving weekend since I'm off work. It puts me in the Christmas spirit! :goodvibes

You're supposed to take them down?

If it's just putting up the lights while it's warm and waiting to turn them on at night until after T day, I think it's fine (and something I've done myself). But if they actually have them ON at night, that's a bit differant! Personally I think people should wait until after Thanksgiving, but I'd be okay with mid-November.

For indoor decorations, whatever floats your boat! My boss is doing her's this weekend, since she'll be out of town alot between next week and Dec. 9. If she didn't do it now, by the time she gets back in December it wouldn't be worth doing!

I started seeing Christmas inflatables last Saturday! I don't decorate or put anything up until after Thanksgiving. That's usually the first Sunday of Advent so I'm ok starting then.
I would get tired of the stuff by Christmas if I put it all up this early!

I put our lights up last week because it was warm, they are NOT on yet and won't get turned on until after Thanksgiving. It was 76° her Wednesday and a LOT of people were putting their lights out in our neighborhood but no one has them on.

there's people a few blocks away that already have their house fully decorated for Christmas. lights, fake snowmen, santa and some reindeer. and they're all plugged in and turned on already.

it's funny because you look across the street and their neighbors still have some of their Halloween stuff up.
